MNG03218 Managing Information Systems Assignment 1
MNG03218 Management Information System
Assignment 1
Due: Thursday 29 November 2018 Length: 2,500 words Weighting: 25% For this assignment you will have to prepare a paper that critically discusses how organisations apply the strategic use of IS/IT to achieve IS/IT-enabled innovation (Note: you should try to focus on information systems rather than mobile apps and social media platforms & applications). Some aspects and issues you may discuss in your paper could include (but are not limited to):
Discuss at least 4 examples of the use of IS/IT for innovation.
Highlight some success factors or some lessons learned (i.e., what went wrong?) for your examples
Discuss the impacts of internal factors (e.g., organisational, individual, and management factors) and external factors (e.g., market, industry, social, economic, technological and political/policy factors) on the success (or the failure) of IS/IT enabled innovation.
Suggest recommendations and guidelines for helping organisations succeed in their efforts to embark on using IS/IT for innovation with good explanation and discussion.
You should apply relevant knowledge discussed in your unit. You should prepare for this assignment by reviewing the literature (i.e. by using ProQuest 5000 and Science Direct databases at http://www.scu.edu.au/library/index.php/) and searching the World Wide Web (i.e. via Google). You should show evidence that you have read at least 10 references, which must be published after January 2012, in the literature (including references from academic and professional publications) to prepare this assignment. A variety of references are expected including books, refereed journals, case studies, newspapers, magazines and electronic references.
Format for Assignment 1 MNG03218
You will be marked on communication as well as content. This is done to emphasise the importance of aiming for effective communication as well as good content – not only here in a university assignment, but also in your day-to-day work. After all, if you do not communicate and present your ideas well, it is much harder to have your ideas accepted by busy colleagues or executives. Your assignment should contain: • Title page • Table of contents • Introduction • Main body of report with suitable headings and subheadings • Conclusions • Reference list • Appendices (if relevant).

In the ‘Body’ of your Report include one longer relevant indirect quotation. Indirect quotes are paraphrases or summaries of the words of someone else worked into the text of your writing. Example: George Washington Carver (1890) believed that the world takes notice when your everyday actions are done extraordinarily (Bagley, 2013). This is a paraphrase of the previous example of a direct quote.
  Choose one of these Hallmark Events to write about: Carnival Rio de Janeiro F1 Grand Prix Monaco The Championships Wimbledon (London) The Melbourne Cup Melbourne Mardi Gras New Orleans Oktoberfest Munich New Year’s Eve Sydney Film Festival Cannes Jazz Festival Montreux Rugby Sevens Hong Kong Country Music Festival Tamworth Running the Bulls Pamplona International Festival Edinburgh

  Assignment Description
The long-term evolution (LTE)/LTE-advanced (LTE-A) provides advanced services with higher bandwidths, better spectrum efficiency and lower latency compared to the legacy cellular networks. The LTE/LTE-A is an all IP-based architecture, which makes it vulnerable to new security threats. In order to evaluate the performance of LTE/LTE-A networks, an understanding of the architecture and security threats is essential.
For further reading, could refer to the article “LTE/LTE-A Network Security Data Collection and Analysis for Security Measurement: A Survey” [1]. The article is available on the IEEE Explore platform, which could be accessed via the Melbourne Institute of Technology Library.
The assessment requires the students to compare wireless communication technologies and evaluate the wireless communication standards for wireless cyber physical systems and internet of things. The students are required to submit a report, which includes:
Comparison of the existing cellular networks generations in terms of:
Communication spectrum
modulation techniques
medium access control mechanism
Network speed and bandwidth utilization
Security techniques and risk
  Explore the architecture of LTE/LTE-A
Evaluate the LTE/LTE-A attacks on the access and core
Identify and analyse the attack with highest criticality, and explain the countermeasures taken to address such

MGMT6002 Influencing and Making Decisions
MGMT6002 Influencing and Making Decisions
ASSESSMENT BRIEF Subject Code and Title MGMT6002 Influencing and Making Decisions Assessment Assignment One: Reflective Analysis Individual/Group Individual Length 3000 Word Limit Learning Outcomes ·         Select and evaluate the usefulness of a range of decision making tools and reflect on your decision making styles and contrast with other styles and determine the respective levels of rationality and
intuition utilised
Submission By 23:59 (SYD time) Friday of the end of Module 3 Weighting 50% Total Marks 50 marks
  Context:
The first half of this subject focuses on the individual and the specific processes—cognitive or otherwise—that individuals engage in when faced with a decision to make. Your task in this first assessment is to reflect on those processes in the context of your own experience and in accounts found in wider reading, and to identify and critique the specific models and frameworks available to you as a decision-maker.
Instructions:
Construct a reflective analytical report, founded on solid research of decision-making methods, models, frameworks and taxonomies found both in the subject and in wider scholarly reading you undertake.
The report is to be limited to 3000 words, exclusive of formal document sections (i.e. title page, executive summary, table of contents, references list, appendices, etc.), citations, tables and graphs. Students should submit one file through Turnitin.
There are a number of forms the report could take. The exact form the report will depend on the additional research the student will undertake; students should aim for the demonstration of deep learning, founded on theory through thorough reading of scholarly literature, rather than on getting any aspect of the brief ‘right.’
Students should commence this assignment early, keep regular backups and ensure they submit the correct, final version. Students should use this brief as the instruction set for the assignment requirements. Additionally, the rubric below can be used to describe what
  unacceptable, functional, proficient, advanced and exceptional assignments might look like according to the criteria in the leftmost column of each row.
As this is a Masters level subject, students are expected to engage with high-quality academic journal articles, using the Torrens University Library. Textbooks, Wikipedia and, in general, anything that can be obtained through an open Google search page are considered supplementary material, unbecoming of a postgraduate.
Learning Rubrics
There are numerous ways to interpret the assessment brief. This rubric should not be used as a prescription or tick-the-box list of requirements but as a description of an amalgam of several possible interpretations and the standards they might take. The assessment will be graded holistically, based on the criteria in the leftmost column. Your interpretation may not match the rubric exactly as you may extend the requirements, using your initiative to demonstrate your mastery of the subject matter. Additionally, you may demonstrate elements described in the Advanced column and still be graded ‘Functional’ for one or more of the criteria (the reverse trend is also possible). Higher performing submissions will depend on wider reading, rather than on the rubric verbatim.
  Assessment Attributes Fail (Unacceptable) Pass (Functional) Credit (Proficient) Distinction (Advanced) High Distinction (Exceptional) Analysis (30%) The analysis is simplistic and does not tap into the richness of the situation. Demonstrates limited awareness of or minimally analyses.
Identifies a process to address decision- making and demonstrates an ability to apply key frameworks and models. Identifies and successfully interprets key and pertinent issues of the brief.
Identifies a range of pertinent components of the brief.
Recommends processes to help make decisions and to continue to identify problem areas.
Demonstrates an ability to analyse dilemmas.
Assesses the capacity for continuing to operate manage, having made a decision.
Integrates understanding of the range of pertinent issues of the brief. Develops recommendations to address ambiguous issues. Understands limitations of identified models. Has the ability to assess an decision viability. Demonstrates innovation in the range of pertinent components of the brief and communicates a critical understanding. Interprets a range of frameworks for future decision-making. Has the ability to assess decision viability as well as possibilities for reorganisation, considering the
present situation.
Argument cogency (30%) The argument is simplistic and does not tap into the richness of the situation. The argument can be seen to be based on logic and evidence. Argument is critical, examining multiple viewpoints before concluding. Uses a number of frameworks to inform and structure the
argument.
Demonstrates a consistent and sophisticated argument, founded on
theory and practice.
    Assessment Attributes Fail (Unacceptable) Pass (Functional) Credit (Proficient) Distinction (Advanced) High Distinction (Exceptional) Presentation (20%) The presentation is simplistic or is very difficult to follow. Numerous spelling or grammatical errors make readability cumbersome. Significant drafting or reworking is required. Includes a one-page executive summary that features a full report summary as well as key report recommendations, enticing the reader to continue to read on. Introduction sets the tone for the report, outlining objectives, assumptions and limitations. Conclusion rolls up arguments, providing useful, practical-based outtakes for the
reader.
Report is divided into headings, all exhibits are labelled and discussed, page numbers.
Conforms to spelling and grammar
conventions.
The report presentation is outstanding. It is professionally presented and could be considered consultant-grade quality. This will be used as a model
report.
Research (20%) The student has made little or no attempt to incorporate high-quality sources. This key postgraduate skill will need to be developed in subsequent assignments. Makes an attempt to use high-quality sources. May need to focus on referencing standard. Has cited numerous high-quality sources using the Torrens University library databases. Incorporates conventions and ideas of high- quality sources into the substance of
the report.
Demonstrates mastery of multiple high-quality external sources, offering balanced criticism and
critical thought.

Case Study
‘As a separate legal person, a corporation has two basic objectives: To survive and to thrive. Shareholder value is not the objective of the corporation; it is an outcome of the corporation’s activities. While shareholders entrust their stakes in a corporation to the board of directors, shareholders are just one audience among others that the board may consider when making decisions on behalf of the corporation.
These audiences, typically called stakeholders, may also include other financial stakeholders, such as bondholders, and nonfinancial stakeholders, such as employees, customers, suppliers, and NGOs representing various concerns of civil society. In the face of limited resources, no matter how large the corporation, directors must make choices regarding the significance of the corporation’s many audiences.’
Source: Robert G Eccles and Tim Youmans (2015) ‘Why Boards Must Look Beyond Shareholders’, MIT Sloan Management Review
http://sloanreview.mit.edu/article/why-boards-must-look-beyond-shareholders
Required
Assume you have been employed as a corporate governance consultant by the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD). The AICD is concerned that many company directors hold the opinion that the company’s board of directors has a responsibility to place the interests of shareholders above all other stakeholder interests.
Your assignment is to prepare a report to be submitted to the AICD evaluating the evidence that the responsibility of a company director is to place shareholder interests above those of other stakeholders. Specifically, the AICD has requested that your report contain evidence, examples and recommendations for company directors that will guide them when making board decisions so they are responsive to diverse stakeholder audiences. The AICD has advised you that they intend to make your report a public document and it will be uploaded to the website so it can be read by both corporate governance specialists and non-specialists.

  Introduction
Corporate Social Responsibility is a concept wherein companies attempt to amalgamate their social & environmental issues in their operations & shareholders interactions. There should be a balance among the environmental, social and economic together with satisfying the expectations of the stakeholders of the company by its socially responsible actions (Aguinis, 2010).  There are a lot of damage which the companies do to the environment and its surrounding. Hence, it is their responsibility to give it back to the environment.
The main idea of corporate social responsibility is to put the interest of the collective above an individual. It also requires an ownership to take care of the future which includes operating with utter responsibility towards the upcoming generation which is again closely linked to nature.
Previously, companies had its focus on the profitability of the company rather than the betterment of society.  These days, companies ought to begin engaging in more social causes. Hence, in order to ensure sustainable development of society, companies must engage in activities for the betterment of society like corporate social responsibility activities (Asemah, 2013).
Research Topic
The research topic for the study is “Impact of CSR on corporate in Australia”
Research Objectives and Research Questions
The objective of the research is to study Impact of CSR on corporate in Australia. There are many implications of CSR on a company. The objectives of the research are laid in such a way so that clarity can be obtained on the impact of CSR on company. The major objectives of the research are as follows:
To understand the scope of CSR
To have an idea about how CSR can benefit society
To understand how triple bottom line approach helps company
To understand how CSR can affect a company
To understand the advantages and disadvantage of CSR for corporate
To understand the elements which are affected by CSR
To understand the impact of CSR on value chain of company
To understand the type of opportunity associated with CSR for the company
Research Questions
The research questions which need to be answered by means of this study are as follows:
What is the scope of CSR
How CSR can benefit society
How does triple bottom line approach helps the company
How CSR can affect a company
What are the advantages and disadvantage of CSR for corporate
What are the elements which are affected by CSR
What is the impact of CSR on value chain of the company
What type of opportunities are associated with CSR for the company
Should management prefer CSR
Justification for Research Topic
Companies have started working towards improving the environment. It is because of the reason that companies have damaged the environment and society because of their business operation.  Hence, the companies have stated involving in corporate social responsibility to benefit all of its stakeholders. They take steps to support environment and society at large. It is necessary for the people and corporate to behave responsibly for instance, companies should focus on reducing their carbon footprint (Badiru, 2008).
CSR aims at contributing to economic development of the corporate and economy along with improving the living standard of the workforce and their families along with the local community and society as a whole by means of continuous commitment by companies to abide by the business ethics. There are many benefits of CSR which can interest the top management of the company. The company can benefit with the wellbeing of others as it benefit the employees of the company, it helps in the company’s marketing strategy etc. Hence, studying the impact of corporate social responsibility becomes important. Now most of the companies are becoming socially responsible and they try to take steps to improve the social, economical, environmental impact of its operation (Baron, 2010).
Corporate social responsibility has been a compliance requirement for many companies. Hence, it is important to understand its impact on the company.  Every corporate tries to stand out of the crowd by applying certain strategies and tactics corporate get increased media coverage when they are involved in CSR activity. It is like cheap publicity for the corporate. Most of the time, media tend to cover philanthropic activities of the corporate leading to positive publicity of the company. This provides a competitive edge to the organisation which makes it crucial for us to study all the effects of CSR on the organisation (Johnson, Craig, 2009).
Duration of the project
The duration of the project is 13 weeks. There are multiple things which needs to be accomplished in these 13 weeks for the research
The tentative idea of how the project will progress in these 13 weeks is as follow:
Week 1-2: Research proposal Creation
Week 3-5: Literature Review
Week 6-7: Data Collection
Week 8-10: Data Analysis
Week 11: Finding and recommendation
Week 12-13: Report formation
Expected Research Outcome Expected
With the help of this research, we have expected to understand the impact of CSR on the company. There are various benefits of CSR to the organisation like positive publicity of the company, employee retention, partner retention, increased sales as a result of improved image of company etc.
CSR activities involve high investment by the company but the tangible and intangible return of corporate social responsibility on the company is very high. All the benefits of CSR to the company and its value chain can be highlighted with the help of this study.

MGMT6011 Strategic Management Capstone
  ASSESSMENT BRIEF Subject Code and Title MGMT6011 Strategic Management Capstone Assessment One – Development of a Case Study Individual/Group Individual Length 3000 words Learning Outcomes PLO1, PLO2, PLO3 and PLO4 Submission By 11:55 PM, Melbourne time, Friday, end of Module 3Choose an item. Weighting 50% Total Marks 50
Objectives:
Apply strategic management theory into practice;
Development understanding of theories, concepts and models to support operations frm a strategic perspective;
Identify and analyse strategic issues;
Assess organisational strengths and limitations;
Build awareness of ethical and social considerations for strategic issues;
Evaluate information in support of the development of a case study report; and
Gain global perspectives in the analysis of strategic
Instructions:
Choose an organisation you are familiar with. Draw on several peer-reviewed academic journal articles using the library resources available to you. You are to use your chosen firm as the vehicle through which to validate the theory in this subject. This means your primary job in this assignment is to bridge theory and praxis. In preparing your report, ensure you cover the following points:
Introduce your organisation, its objectives and examine its ownership structure. Comment on the external and internal governance mechanisms and any forms of external control;
Identify and explain the basic sources of cost and differentiation advantage in the industry. Position the organisation and its major competitors in a strategic group diagram, using theory to explain it as well as any assumptions you make*;
use a value chain analysis of your organisation to identify sources of competitive advantage;
conduct a VIRO analysis of the sources of competitive advantage from question 3 to determine whether they are indeed sources of sustainable competitive advantage. Connect the development of these resources with the corporate governance mechanisms you identified in question 1;
make recommendations for the development of strategic resources (including corporate governance processes) to increase the competitiveness of your organisation, while staying within the same strategic group (recommendations that create competitive advantage
consistent with the organisation’s current competitive posture are expected).
You are expected to produce an academic report that includes an executive summary, formal document sections such as a table of contents, introduction and conclusion. As this is the capstone (or equivalent) subject, it is expected you will be very used to and comfortable with using external sources to validate your thinking and to demonstrate substantial wider reading.
Students should use the brief to inform what is required in the assignment and the following rubric to inform the standard of work required to earn your desired grade.
* Some students may choose to analyse a government enterprise and later claim that there are no competitors. Governments, local councils and countries all compete for resources, to attract investment and other non-monetary capital. All entities compete!
Learning Rubrics
Assessment Attributes Fail (Unacceptable) Pass (Functional) Credit (Proficient) Distinction (Advanced) High Distinction (Exceptional) Identification of strategic issues
  5 marks
Does not adequately demonstrate an awareness of strategic issues. Focuses on low-level ideas that are operational in nature or that do not affect the long- term viability of the enterprise. Adequately demonstrates an awareness of strategic issues. More work is needed to articulate an understanding of the case study and its emergence as a key competitor. Meets minimum requirements in demonstrating an awareness of strategic issues. May require some additional work in making some aspects of the case study clearer to the reader, or to provide more contextual detail. Exceeds minimum requirements, clearly articulating a penchant for awareness of strategic. The report, particularly the start, is focused on the strategic issues facing the case
study organisation.
Demonstrates an outstanding awareness of strategic issues in the presentation of the case study. This aspect of the report should be used to demonstrate to future students how to demonstrate strategic
awareness!
Assessment of organisational context
  10 marks
Does not demonstrate any formal techniques in assessing and analysing the external environment. Relies on narrative to describe context. Adequately applies one or more formal techniques in assessing and presenting the context for the case study organisation.
Some greater attention to detail is needed.
Meets minimum requirements in applying formal techniques. Could use an additional technique to fully present the context. Minor errors in the application may
feature.
Moves beyond minimum requirements by attempting a PESTEL, SWOT and
five forces analysis to a good standard. Context is clear.
Shows an outstanding application of formal techniques, including PESTEL, SWOT and
the five forces model to an excellent standard. Analyses critically presented
and shows no bias.
  Assessment Attributes Fail (Unacceptable) Pass (Functional) Credit (Proficient) Distinction (Advanced) High Distinction (Exceptional) Analysis of strategic issues
  10 marks
Does not use the prescribed techniques—value chain and VIRO—to an adequate standard. Analysis is cursory or non-existent. Does not trace the source of competitive advantage. Demonstrates an adequate application of value chain- and/or VIRO analyses.
Significantly more detail is required to demonstrate mastery of these. Analysis may need to be focused more.
Meets minimum requirements in the preparation of value chain- and VIRO analyses. May need to trace competitive advantage back to its source in order to fully demonstrate proficient use of the prescribed techniques. Moves beyond minimum requirements in the application f the value chain- and VIRO analyses. Demonstrates a firm grasp of the analytical tools and shows progress toward mastery of them. Demonstrates outstanding application of value chain and VIRO analysis to produce considered and critical analysis of sources of sustainable competitive advantage.  Mastery of analytical techniques has been
shown.
Recommendations 5 marks Little or no recommendations are provided. Of those that are present they are pedestrian, lack imagination or do not relate to the development of the case study. Adequate volume of recommendations is provided. The individual recommendations can be seen to relate to the development of the case study but need development in order to generate blockbuster status. Meets minimum requirements in the development of an appropriate volume of recommendations that are related to the case study and demonstrate an appropriate degree of imagination, leading to a clear attainment of sustainable competitive advantage. Exceeds minimum requirements in the development of a number of strong recommendations that relate to the case study and demonstrate imagination. A clear path forward has been charted. Recommendations can be seen to integrate directly with theoretical concepts established earlier in the report.
Recommendations consistently transcend practical considerations and represent the attainment of sustainable competitive

    Assessment Attributes Fail (Unacceptable) Pass (Functional) Credit (Proficient) Distinction (Advanced) High Distinction (Exceptional) Report presentation 5 marks The presentation needs serious work. One or more critical elements— introduction, conclusion or executive summary—are missing, the paper is grossly over the word limit. The paper may lack headings and adequate division into paragraphs. The paper is adequately presented, although it is hard for a reader to navigate. One of the introduction, conclusion or executive summary is missing or needs work. There may be a breach of the word limit and expression needs significant work to get your message across to the reader. The presentation meets a minimum requirement and includes all formal document sections (introduction, conclusion and executive summary).
Some additional headings or division into paragraphs would help reader comprehension. Some work on phrasing will also help readability.
The paper moves beyond minimum requirements as it is presented professionally. The formal document sections (introduction, conclusion and executive summary) are present and meet expectations. An outstanding presentation. All sections flow logically, are linked and have been punctuated with a compelling executive summary, introduction and conclusion. All figures are labelled appropriately, introduced and form part of a cogent argument in the discussion. This is a model presentation
for future students.
Use of appropriate academic sources
  5 marks
Little or no academic references are used to reinforce certain points. An attempt to integrate academic sources has been demonstrated.
But significant additional reading is required to be demonstrated.
An attempt has been made to incorporate academic sources into the paper. There is a good volume of sources being used and the paper would benefit from some critical appraisal of that literature. The paper demonstrates a good volume of sources being cited throughout. The author has been critical of academic sources and all sources referred are in the references list (and
vice versa).
A substantial amount of credible and strong academic sources have been cited throughout the report. The correct referencing style has been adhered to.
    Assessment Attributes Fail (Unacceptable) Pass (Functional) Credit (Proficient) Distinction (Advanced) High Distinction (Exceptional) Integration of subject theory
  10 marks
Makes little or no attempt to validate theory from the subject into the presentation of the material. Makes an attempt to incorporate theoretical concepts from the course into the report. Attempts to show theory as a feature of the report. May need some additional critical thought to develop mastery of those theoretical components. Has clearly made theoretical concepts the feature of the report. Is critical of theoretical components, tracing the original source of the concept and showing a theory-
practice bridge.
Demonstrates mastery of theoretical concepts from the subject by critically reflecting on and, at times introducing counterarguments to those ideas. The paper should be reserved as a model answer for theoretical
integration.
