Coco: the Musical
Ok, I’ll probably never get to make this into a reality, but if I were to make Coco into a stage musical, here’s how I’d do it;
1. The opening number is the cut “Día de los Muertos” song, only instead of it being part of Ernesto’s show, it’s the citizens of Santa Cecilia singing the song, with Abuelita entering and yelling “NO MUSIC!!” which ends the number. https://youtu.be/Qfa1wf4gGy8
2. We see Miguel enter, sneaking away to Mariachi Plaza to shine shoes. He starts to shine the mariachi’s shoes while telling him (and the audience) about his family’s history. With actors behind him acting out the story (probably some extras so that way the identity of his great-great grandfather remains a mystery).
3. Dante is a puppet, like Olaf or Pumbaa in their respective shows.
4. The Riveras don’t get a musical number until the end act 2. They had a song written for them in the movie, but it was cut. Because explaining why your family hates music through song is kinda missing the point.
5. When Miguel goes to his hidey-hole to play, he adds his own lyrics to the song he’s playing, occasionally crossing words with what Ernesto is saying on the TV (like in Hamilton’s “Farmer Refuted”) https://youtu.be/-oOVtu6sCdo
6. When Miguel crosses between the Land of the Living and the Land of the Dead, marigold petals fall from the ceiling (a slow, snow-like fall when he crosses the bridge, and shot out of a confetti cannon when he teleports via blessings).
7. More scenes of the Dead Riveras following Miguel’s trail can be sprinkled in (to give Miguel time to progress his skeleton transformation off stage)
8. A slow mournful song about the Final Death that the residents of Shantytown sing that serves as a warning. It comes back when Héctor begins to show signs of being forgotten.
9. Imelda getting a song where she vents her frustration over Héctor’s abandonment (like “Burn” from Hamilton)
10. Ernesto gets a villain song after his murder plot is revealed, where he justifies his actions.
11. Héctor’s Final Death spasms can be created via lights in his costume that flicker remotely.
12. All of the songs that the characters sing in the context of the movie stay (“Remember Me”, “Un Poco Loco”, “Everyone Knows Juanita”, “The World Es Mi Familia”, “La Llorona”, “Proud Corazón”)
13. All the Riveras, living and dead, join in singing “Proud Corazón” as the finale.

You know who I'd want to see the POV of? That one mariachi in the beginning of the movie.
Imagine you're a musician, and you're playing your guitar in your town's plaza, and there's this kid going around offering people shoe shines, so you ask him for one. While he's doing it he starts telling you his whole entire life story, from his great-great-grandfather leaving almost a hundred years ago; to the fact that all of his family makes shoes (which you had kind of guessed); to the fact that none of them are allowed to listen to music, due to said great-great-grandfather, but he really, really wants to be a musician; down to his great-grandmother's dementia. You tell him that there's a talent show happening tonight, which you yourself probably wanted to take part in, and to give him encouragement, you offer to let him try out a tune on your guitar. Then all of a sudden his grandmother appears out of nowhere and starts whacking you with her sandal.
