as the vigilant yaksha, xiao has grown used to battle and bloodshed. sometimes, in fact, he even craves it. it's evident in the way his knee occasionally won't stop bouncing even amidst the tranquility of the watching the sun's rays bathe wangshu inn in gold, or how his gloved fingers flex and clench as if clutching the hilt of a polearm in preparation to stab a monster. war is all the poor adeptus knows, as it's been raging both around him and inside his head ever since he was young and forced into fighting. the memories torment his every waking moment, leading him to desire almost desperately the freedom of the battlefield, where it was okay to go feral, where it was okay to ignore the voices screaming in his mind, where it was okay to switch it all off.
but then you cup his face and smile at him gently, "xiao, have i told you lately, i'm grateful you're mine?" and suddenly your touch is grounding him, pulling back into reality, back into the present, back to you. and everything is alright. his face warms under the innocence of your naive skin in contact with his, marred by none of the horrors he's witnessed. xiao may be tarnished, his nights darkened by nightmares dripping in ruby blood and sharp weapons, but being with you makes everything better. being with you makes him feel as if he can finally have a fresh start and begin anew, leaving the past to collect dust and cobwebs in the corners of his mind.
even now, as his amber eyes shine softly with the love bubbling in his heart that he's so hesitant yet simultaneously eager to share with you, he replies, "you don't need to, dove. i already know, and i'm a million times more thankful to be able to love you." with your face breaking into a grin and your lips then meeting his in a chaste kiss, xiao thinks that doing nothing with you forever is already perfection.
