IMO you can't say anything coherent about most US-based right wing conspiracy theories without understanding how seriously the diehards in these movements believe in The Devil
the obvious question, "who benefits from maintaining this elaborate lie," does not stop people like Flat Earthers because many of them are young earth creationists who believe in powerful spiritual forces whose only goals are
1. convincing people that Christianity isn't true
2. the proliferation of largely symbolic Evil, which they enjoy tricking you into supporting
"tricking" people into believing the earth is round is enough of a goal for The Devil to go to all that trouble. if people don't believe in God's perfect little flat earth then they're also free to believe in things like evolution and the big bang
practicality and material concerns are usually irrelevant. the lie is worth maintaining because The Devil has near unlimited time, resources, and human servants, and his top priority is Getting You

Do you love her or do you need someone you can save?
Can you see past her mistakes and shortcomings? Or is that all she is? She's doing all she can. Is that enough? Does it hurt you that she can't love herself? Do you get frustrated when she wants more? How do you think it feels like to not be able to love yourself, to want more and not be able to ask?
You wish helping her was easier. I know you wish you could just say a couple of words and fix her. Love is a choice, an active effort. Will you be there for her when she needs to feel like someone cares? Will you say hi every day for her, every week, every month? Is that too much work? Do you feel like you're making a sacrifice for her? Wasting your time? Will you be there when she needs someone that will listen, and someone to talk to? Or is she too awkward for you, too talkative, too weird, too stupid, too unattractive, too mentally ill, too depressed?
You think there is something wrong with her. You see her as a cornered, wounded animal. Will you give up on her eventually? Will you ignore her cries for help? Does her suicidal ideation make you uncomfortable? Do you feel hurt when she lashes out? Do you feel attacked when she tells you you're not doing enough, that you're making her feel like she's too much?
Do you love her or do you just need to feel like you care?

Amuro Ray destroying the Gundam's joints due to being too good at piloting before they applied the magnetic coating-ass behavior, Dave.
Now, in the clear light of the post-combat situation report I grant that it was perhaps not the most tactically efficient course to expend a once-per-mission cooldown and incur sufficient excess heat to melt my own reactor core twice over in order to inflict 45 points of damage upon a target with 8 HP, but I strongly feel any assessment of the soundness of my decision should take into account that fucker had it coming.

Watching my toddler figure out how to language is fascinating. Yesterday we were stumped when he kept insisting there was a “Lego winner” behind his bookshelf - it turned out to be a little Lego trophy cup. Not knowing the word for “trophy”, he’d extrapolated a word for “thing you can win”. And then, just now, he held up his empty milk container and said, “Mummy? It’s not rubbish. It’s allowed to be a bottle.” - meaning, effectively, “I want this. Don’t throw it away.” But to an adult ear, there’s something quite lovely about “it’s allowed to be a bottle,” as if we’re acknowledging that the object is entitled to keep its title even in the absence of the original function.

WONDER BAR (1934) | dir. Lloyd Bacon
“The other [scene that stands out above the rest] involved a handsome man, asking a dancing couple if he could cut in. The female partner, expecting his attention, agrees, only to see him dance with her male partner. Jolson then flaps his wrist and says, “Boys will be boys. Woo!”. This scene almost caused the Production Code to reject the film, and was featured in the opening scenes of the documentary film The Celluloid Closet (1996).”
