RE: That COD video
Before we start, some required viewing; http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=R7HbCkU_-cM This video is getting a lot of attention today on twitter and the general internet areas, quite rightfully. It depicts a room of people auditioning to get the part of the patient-zero monkey in a 28 Day Later remake. There's been a healthy discussion on how bad this is, with views ranging from "pretty bad" to "nuclear-waste-in-a-playground" bad. I think it is an isolated incident that could do a lot of damage to the image of "E-sports" (or "competitive video games" if you dislike that term) Judging from the reactions online, this seems to disturb fans of "E-Sports" more than just fans of gaming with no interest in that scene. The people in the latter group are saying "What's the big deal? We know CoD is like this!" and in that respect I can agree. However, this is not the norm. When a game of Starcraft 2 doesn't start with "Good Luck, Have Fun" and end with "Good Game" the offending player is frowned upon by the community and the player looks petty and childish. Similarly, in the world of fighting games (the scene I'm personally most familiar with) it is not unlikely to see competitors share a friendly hand shake pre or post-match. So to stand up, mid game, and shout across at your opponent that they "Look like a gypsy" and making open armed, hyper aggressive gestures looks like utter unprofessional chaos. As I read some of the responses today it made me reflect on my own opinions on traditional sports. Growing up, as I did, in central Scotland, Football was THE sport you played. There were fringe sports, sure, but Football was IT. I was never greatly bothered for the game growing up, seeing as I would firstly rather play Pokémon on my gameboy at lunchtime and secondly I was absolutely dreadful at Football anyway. In the past few years I have discovered a liking for Rugby Union and am a pretty big follower of the mighty, top of the league (haha in your face Edinburgh you guys suck) Glasgow Warriors. Watching Rugby for the first time if you are used to Football is a reality warping experience. Crowds are generally more respectful of players and officials, fans are typically not segregated and there is typically silence when a player of either team goes to kick a penalty. Similarly, players are always expected to respect the referee and any abuse given to the ref will be severely punished. In this respect, it is likely you'll see a referee add 10 meters onto a penalty for dissension. After experiencing this different level of respect and attitude, to return to watching football where players will crowd the ref, shout abuse at him and sarcastically clap in his face is horrifying. This is what it's like watching these COD players. It saddens me to think that some gaming fans will see this and be put off E-sports communities. Please, please don't be. There is no perfect community, and they all have bad eggs, but you'll find that the quality of respect and behaviour is usually much higher than this. If you still don't believe me and live in the Glasgow area, go check out Hypespotting 2013. It's the UK's biggest fighting game event, should be a lot of fun even just for spectators, and you will meet some of the friendliest competitive gamers around.

Debi and I just adopted a jack russell terrier called Roxie. So, here she is. She's pretty sleepy after a long day of travel and exploring the flat. Cute as hell.

Have just stumbled upon one of the most beautiful, elegant games I've ever seen. It seems dead simple; get your little discs as close to the centre as possible. However, it's the custom boards you can find over at boardgamegeek.com that are the coolest. Beautiful stuff. Check out this board for instance. Can't you just imagine this board in a study, next to a sepia-coloured globe that opens to display some fine port, on a big wooden desk next to an entire wall bookshelf filled with hundreds of texts.

Kickass Dad of the Day: When Stuart Chaifetz learned that his 10-year-old son, Akian, was being violent and disruptive in class, he was puzzled. He knew Akian, who has autism, to be mild-mannered and sensitive, and had a hunch that something more was going on. But after several meetings with a team of school officials created to help special-needs students, nothing changed. So Chaifetz did what any concerned parent would do.
On the morning of Friday, February 17, 2012, I wired my son and sent him to school. That night, when I listened to the audio my life changed forever. I heard my son being bullied by his teacher and aide. The six and a half hours of audio I had proved that my son wasn’t hitting the teacher because there was something wrong with him — he was lashing out because he was being mocked, mistreated and humiliated. His outbursts were his way of expressing that he was being emotionally hurt at school.
The New Jersey father has since launched a website full of damning evidence and aFacebook page, and he is petitioning the state to change legislation so that teachers who bully children are immediately fired. The aide has been fired, but the rest of the staff have merely been relocated.
“I seek a full and public apology from all those adults who were in my son’s class for what they did to him,” Chaifetz says. “It is also far past time that these issues are allowed to be hidden from public view.”

Had a great time at the Wrestling tonight. Was the only person in my section chanting for Daniel Bryan in the main event, but it was awesome. There were some young kids around maybe 12 or so that would get out their seats and scream "LETS GO SHEAMUS" at me as I retorted with "Let's go Bryan!" To their credit, they were so loud that it spread like wildfire. I'm proud to say that between me and a group of twelve-year-olds we got the whole Braehead Arena chanting as loud as we could. Was awesome. Oh and even Debi was chanting for Sheamus. So alone :(
