Levi, one of the best written characters in manga history
At the end of attack on titan, Levi solidified the fact that he's humanity's strongest not only in the aot world, but also in the entirety of manga world.
Levi's first introduced in chapter 9.5, and as soon as we see him we're presented to one of his most memorable quirks: being a clean freak. Levi's very indifferent to his title as humanity's strongest and seems to go as far as to feel embarrassed by it at times, since it makes all eyes go on him when the sc is passing by.
Later in the chapter, when one of his comrades Is about to die, we see Levi go against his aversion to dirt by holding his dying friend's hand. It is then that we are presented to my favorite personality trait of Levi's: he's extremely caring with those he loves.
Tumblr media
Levi's care is shown in the ACWRN spin off in its crudest form, in a Levi in his 20s that still hadn't learned how to control his impulses, that would do anything to protect the first friends he ever made in his life.
Tumblr media
The complexity of Levi's relationship with violence is insane, because while he despises those that enjoy violence, despises those that think blood should be spilt for fun,
Tumblr media
He also doesn't mind becoming a monster to achieve a greater goal for humanity.
Tumblr media
Levi was born in violence. He was raised in it, practiced it, and still, he was able to maintain the kernel of his heart intact. Levi has seen and done horrible things. He's an abnormal, and one of the most human characters in the whole series.
Tumblr media
A moment where we're able to see Levi's pain shine through is when he kills Zeke. Levi spent years readying himself for that moment. He spent years waiting for the day he'd finally follow through with his promise to Erwin, waited so he could save humanity. And then, when he finally does it, he feels nothing but pain. Because Levi was born in violence, raised in it, practiced it, but was still aversed by it. At the end of the moment, when his promise was fullfilled, when his goal was achieved, he felt pained that this.... This is what it all came down to.
Tumblr media
Levi doesn't say "i love you" conventionally. Instead he says "thank you", because that's the way he feels love. Levi feels love in the form of gratitude, because its in those people -his friends- that he's able to find fhe strength to fight. Levi isn't strong because he's an Ackerman, or because he's just unbelievably skilled. Levi's strong because of the love he feels for those around him.
Tumblr media
The way Levi sees the world...
Tumblr media
And the way he interacts with it...
Tumblr media
All come from love, in its purest form.
Tumblr media
Now in his 40s, Levi's the only person in all of humanity that lived the world of the walls in its crudest, most violent form. Levi's the only one that knows the stories, the faces and the names of those that made their win possible. Levi's the only one that lived every bit of it, from humanity's worst moments of dispair to its most glorious days of victory. Levi's the golden stem that connects the past and the future. He's a product of all the love there is in this world. And I'm so thankful that, even after so much loss, he's not alone in the end.
Levi's not humanity's strongest because of his speed, his agility, or his last name. Levi's humanity's strongest because even in death, he was able to find love, and move on. And I know living is a choice he doesn't regret.

Mikasa’s Destiny and Mikasa’s Choice
This chapter is about Mikasa solving her character arc and it has very interesting similarities with the Lost Girls spinoff.
The spin-off is essentially Mikasa’s dream of how things would have turned out if her parents had not died. She runs in an ideal world where she lives happily with them, but is still given the chance to meet Eren.
However, even if Mikasa can literally control every aspect of that world, she is still not able to save Eren. She disbands the Survey Corps and closes the Walls Doors. Despite all this, Eren keeps trying to go outside and to leave her… and dies trying to fly away.
Here, there is a very similar idea:
Tumblr media
Mikasa wants to escape to her “home” and sees an alternative reality, a dream where she and Eren have run away from war and Marley.
They are together, but things are not perfect:
Tumblr media
Why can’t Mikasa stay there, but still, why is it important that she had a “long dream” about it?

Note
hii, what are your thoughts on ch136? i find it really interesting both Armin and Zeke are together in paths now and the fact Zeke said "did Ymir ate you too?", we're finally getting answers! i'm not a fan of Mikasa killing Eren, do you think it will happen? i just hope 3 chapters are enough to give their relationship closure, i've been anticipating the EM reunion for so long but i'm worried since there's only 3 chapters left
Isn't isayama getting tired of telling us that it's hard for everyone to kill eren. Moreover we already saw eren telling them they'll have to kill him with armin and mikasa breaking down. We got the same thing again this chapter with mikasa. How do you feel about this?
Hello anons!
These two asks can be answered together.
I agree with many of the thoughts @hamliet shared here and I have talked a little of my general thoughts here.
Generally speaking, this chapter is about the characters strengthening their resolves (”dedicating their hearts” to a cause aka saving humanity). On one hand we see characters like Jean and Connie accepting the necessity to kill Eren. On the other hand we see Mikasa and Annie focusing on the people they love:
Tumblr media
Annie calming Mikasa down is a call back to this scene:
Tumblr media
There, it was Mikasa emphatizing with Annie’s feelings and accepting her decision not to fight. Here, it is Annie understanding Mikasa’s feelings more than anyone and finding a way to keep her together. Notice that both girls have given the other a temporary break to indulge in their flaws. Mikasa does not push Annie to open up about her feelings and lets her out of the fight. Annie does not force Mikasa to give up on her feelings and keeps her in the fight. However, in the end the flaws have to go. Annie’s was that she kept prioritizing herself and closed herself off, so now she is fighting for others and wants to save the person she loves. Mikasa’s is her inability to let Eren go, so she will let him go in the end.
Will she be the one killing Eren in the end? I think she probably will given the emphasis put on it:
Tumblr media
I think all this focus can be paid off only if Mikasa is the one who finally does it. If she is not, I still think letting Eren go will be a major focus for her arc and that she will be given resolution with Eren. Tbh though, I really think Mikasa being Eren’s final opponent would be the best way to solve this.
The reason why is linked to the second anon’s ask and I have already stated it above. The fact Eren must be killed and Mikasa’s reaction to it has been highlighted way too much not to mean anything.
Am I annoyed by the insistence on this topic? No, I am not because I think this is basically the major conflict of the series by now. Being the major conflict means that this is the heart of both the plot and the themes of the series. Like it or not,  the conflict between Eren and his former comrades, especially Mikasa and Armin, is currently the heart of the story.
Could Isayama have found different ways to explore this concept and made it a little less forceful? Probably yes, but firstly Snk is not subtle when it wants to hammer a concept home. Secondly, I don’t think the characters’ reactions are excessive. They all love Eren. He has been the heart of the 104th little family for years and it is painful for them to fight him. For readers, it might seem repetitive, but for characters who are going through these events at an incredible speed it is not.
So, why should Mikasa be Eren’s final foe?
It is because she has the perfect flaw to play that role. Mikasa’s flaw is her feelings for Eren. To be more specific, that is both her flaw and her best quality. Mikasa has gone through horrible trauma, but she has not lost her humanity. She deeply cares and sometimes she cares too much. Mikasa’s love for Eren is the embodyment of both cruel and beautiful. It is both miraculous and unhealthy. This is why she should be given the chance to work through these emotions as the last act of her arc.
Now, a character can overcome their flaw either passively or actively.
For example, in PMMM, Madoka overcomes her flaw actively, while Homura passively. This works in that story because Madoka’s flaw is a passive one (her inability to truly desire something), while Homura’s one is active (her obsession with her desires). Moreover, Madoka herself is a passive character, while Homura is an active one. Homura acts and drives the plot, while Madoka reacts to it. This is why it fits that in the end their roles are reversed.
In Mikasa’s case, overcoming her flaw passively means that she accepts Eren’s death, while overcoming it actively means that Mikasa has a role in such death.
It is better for her to have an active role because if she does not her impact on the plot would be underwhelming. It would not fit all the focus and the build up she has received. Moreover, we already know Mikasa is able to accept Eren’s death. She has already done it in Trost and she knows Eren has few years left at best. Having someone else kill Eren and Mikasa simply moving on would not add anything to her character.
I mean, it is the same as in the serumbowl. That choice is so powerful and meaningful because it is Levi who makes it and we know Levi deeply loves Erwin. If Eren or Mikasa were the ones making it, it would not have the same meaning, nor the same power.
I also think that some people might imagine Mikasa killing Eren in a different way than I do.
Some might think about it as something that completely breaks Mikasa.
Others might see it as Mikasa freeing herself and taking revenge on how Eren has treated her in chapter 112.
I disagree with both views and imagine it as a scene that somehow gives resolution to Eren and Mikasa’s relationship:
Tumblr media
It has been hinted Eren might have a death wish and I would not be surprised if Mikasa were to realize it and chose to let Eren go in a parallel to Levi doing the same for Erwin. At the same time, Mikasa can also understand that she can keep on living even without Eren.
In short, do I think Mikasa will kill Eren? Yes. Do I think their relationship will have a resolution? Yes. And the same goes for Armin and Eren’s opposite views on freedom:
Tumblr media
It is interesting that Armin is with Zeke in the paths. On one hand Zeke is the one who killed Erwin, while Armin is Erwin’s legacy. At the same time, Zeke is somehow Armin’s negative foil. He is Armin’s wish for peace and understanding tainted by violence and lack of freedom.
Finally, they are the two people Levi is thinking about in this chapter. Levi, differently from the others, is not dedicating his heart because he is not sure what the SC have been fighting for up until now. What he is asking is if “dedicating one’s heart” is even worth it.
This is made even more poignant by the conflict below them:
Tumblr media
Marleyans and Eldians are still fighting each other in a senseless fight. Will they finally accept each other or will they kill each other? I think the conflict between the soldiers and the Liberio’s survivors will be indicative of humanity’s nature and future.
Is humanity really worth fighting for? And what have they been fighting for up until now?
Of course we already know the answer. They have been fighting for children who are the future. Here, the future is represented by Gabi and Falco. Gabi is who Eren could have become and she is the one that guesses what the origin of the titan powers is. Falco is a flying titan and embodies cruelty (the titan) and beauty (a bird).

Eren’s Dissocation
Tumblr media
This month’s chapter has a lot of people confused on Eren’s actions. Why would Eren choose the worst option possible? Why force himself to do something he clearly doesn’t want to do? Why, when he’s given options to back out, does he instead double down on the bad decision making? Why, when no one is holding a gun to his head does he pick the worst available choice?
The narrative obviously isn’t sympathizing with Eren so we’re meant to question his choices. So let’s get into Eren’s headspace. A place where clearly even Eren doesn’t want to be.

Annie Runs Away (Again).
Tumblr media
Annie has suddenly decided she’s a pacifist. Annie is leaving on a journey of self discovery. Perfect timing. You take all the time you need. It’s not like the world’s ending or anything.
Just kidding. Annie’s not actually acting any different than she usually acts. I’ve said this before, but Annie and Armin are characters who continually exhibit regression rather than development. If you remain the same person more or less throughout the story, that’s not suddenly going to change without impetus. You’re always just the same person, even at the end of the world.
An analysis on Annie and Armin’s failings under the cut. How they parallel Eremika, and why they can’t get close.

Eren’s Gift: The Costs of Peace and Freedom
In my ‘Who Freer than the Tyrant’ meta I posited that peace and freedom are natural enemies. Eren’s words in the latest chapter demonstrate that he has reached the exact same conclusion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If people have the freedom to seek out their desires, conflict will inevitably arise as those desires are often mutually exclusive. Eren allows a potential conflict between him and his friends to occur because he respects the freedom of both parties.
