Movement.
Painting. Graphic Design. Ceramics
So what's the idea?..... Cats in movement or just cats being silly. The best way to explain this is that i see cats as chaos bringers to themselves and the people or animals around them. Their movement is chaotic and silly and that's what I wanted to portray. Cats being in silly locations, cats being oddly human in a silly way. Just really anything chaotic that cats get up to. Mark making is another key thing that I want to draw attention to in my project as it connects if fully from each elective to the next.

Ceramics Artists research.......
I asked Elaine for her help with finding some artists for ceramics that I ould reference and here are some of the ones that I liked the most.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of them include animals in their work which is wy I really liked them. They are all incredibly talented however, out of all of them definitely my favorite is Matias LIImatainen. This little sculpture of the rabbit is so beautiful to me and I love how smooth it is especially with how much detail it has. It's really wonderful to look at.
Dr Natasha Mayo
Tumblr media
Natasha Mayo is a practitioner and researcher in the discipline of ceramics, freelance writer and lecturer at the National Centre for Ceramics Studies in Wales, Cardiff School of Art (UWIC) since 2004.
Her work really inspired me especially because of the way she collaborates with her children to create art. I personally throughout this project have enjoy creating these childish marks and it really matches with Natasha Mayo's work. It's in her most recent practice she explores how mark making can evidence pre reflexive thought, and how children’s drawings can be employed both as symbol and direct recordings of our first encounters with the world.
Her reasoning for doing this is very deep which is not similar to Mr but I really enjoy her works and think they have such a cute charm about them.

Here is what the final product looks like before the kilen). I tried to still make the piece look silly by arranging the donut shaped stones and the koi fish into a smile. I unfortunately did not have enough time to finish this piece during to multiple reasons but I coloured it in digitally to show how I wanted this piece to look like in the end.

Ceramics!!! - concept
My idea for this elective changed around a good few times and I developed a good few ideas of what I wanted to create. The key factor that needed to be in each of these ideas was the mark making so that it would connect with each of the other pieces I have already done.
My first idea was to make a desert centered creation. I had seen this beautiful ceramics cake in college and I really wanted to make something similar. I tried the idea of a cake slice with little strawberries inside which some of them would be cats. Here's and ide a of what I was imagining... In the end however I scrapped this idea as I came up with a more fun idea
Tumblr media
I came across this dessert called Tanghulu and was instantly inspired. Tanghulu is a chinesse sweet created by hearing up suger to a liquid point and dipping fruits into it and placing it on a stuck to dry and enjoy. It's crunchy and looks absolutely delicious... Here's how it looks like!
Tumblr media
I really wanted to create one out of clay because the suger reminded me of glass a lot after it's been fired. Here's the idea I came up with :)
Tumblr media
I also came up with this idea of just creating a clay cat. It was really simple but I have this laser pointer and I had this idea to where I could create this cat and create a little short video of this cat going on a journey. I have this laser pointer that I thought would be useful in this "story". In the end I decided it felt too much like animation ( stop motion) and ended up scrapping the idea.
I felt a little lost so I ended up just playing around with the clay and just creating marks and swirls in the shape of a cat. I used a scalpel and my own fingers.
Tumblr media
After all of those ideas I came up with my final idea that I ended up doing.
I really wanted to tie in this idea of cats acting human because up to this point I really felt as if I haven't really covered that exactly in my project. I was over at a friends house and found one of these cups in their homes. I didn't end up catching a picture of it but here's the exact one
Tumblr media
This really really inspired me because I thought to myself what if a cat was fishing? Cats do enjoy fish so logically why can't a cat fish for some yummy fish?
I'm quite familiar with the ceramics process s this wasn't too difficult or too out of my comfort zone so it went really smoothely. I begun by creating a base.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I used the method "score and slip" to ensure that the two pieces were well molded together and would not come apart. I make the wall part wavey to represent the water. I continued by sculpting my little fishing cat. The process for that wasn't too difficult either just a lot of smoothing and shaping. I added a little face with my scalpel and then score and slipped it on to its little fishing seat. I also created a little hole where the fishing pole will lay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then begun creating the coy fish and all the little additives bits to make this piece finished. I made little donut shaped stones for the water, I made little swirls that are meant to be shells, stars and I added little cakes as a memory of my previous ideas. I ended up cutting the top of the wall to be able to manipulate the wall a bit more to make it look like waves.

The final video :P
Thank you to everyone who participated!
I ended up using Capcut for this final piece. It was my first time so I wasn't able to really fully developed how I wanted it to look but I think the way that it is now is close enough to what I wanted it to be.
I wanted this to look really silly and childish. Something that couldn't be taken seriously so to do that I put a bunch of dramatic transitions from picture to picture to emphasize that. I wanted this project to feel like a cold was given the opportunity to make and "edit" and just did the most to make it look "cool".
The song I ended up using was the Day care theme from Fnaf Security Breach because I really liked how silly, playful and childish it sounded and it fits perfectly for the idea I was going for. I find it really funny how the transitions often line up with the songs spoinky effects (it's so unintentional but it's so funny)
(I got the song inspiration from this playlist which all of the songs really fit my idea)

Shabalaparabala /lo-fi tatts
London based tattoo artist
I have previously made a post before about Beabadoobee and her posters which I loved. After ages of trying to find out the artists I finally found one of them.
Shabalaparabala is known for their "Childish" and "scratchy" tattoos. I really really love this art style because of those qualities. This "scratchy" art style or more commonly known as "Chicken scratch" is something often times artists are looked down upon because it doesn't look "Professional". However, I love the way it looks and the message that comes across when you see it.
This is the vibe I really wanted to come across in my work. This looseness and lack of perfection.. Is something really appealing to me it feels like chaos almost? Which ties into the theme of my work. Here is some o their work I have also linked their Instagram if you wish to investigate further!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They also did some drawings on top of some cats which I felt was so perfect!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They have also worked for Beabadoobee as I perviously mentioned and they ended up designing the album art for Beatopia!
Here it is.
Tumblr media
I also was scrolling through Beabedoobee's Instagram and her stories whe I found these posts where I really loved the little stickers or drawings and they really remidnedme of Shabalaparabala
Tumblr media
Here some links to videos where their art is also used or it reminds me of them!

Mirror inspiration...
I took inspiration from my doodles of cats to paint the bigger cat on the mirror which is below in my feed...
However when I was thinking about it these cats themselves have "invaded" my own CCS notes and that itself is movement. How did they end up here? ( I totally didn't draw them shhh) why are they here???

Painting mirror :)
I've discussed this idea beforr on this Tumblr and I really really liked it. While doing my artists research I came across this piece by Louis Wain of a mirror painting of cats here's the painting.
Tumblr media
I thought the idea of painting ona mirror was brilliant and could really well translate to my project idea. I thought I could paint my own car onta mirror and have many people take pictures with it to represent the cat "moving" frm person to person. As if the cat is constantly changing places and meeting new people. I though it was a really silly idea and really blends into hoe I want this project to feel. Silly and childish. I also took a lot of inspiration from Vanessa Stockard Her design if her little cat " Kevin " inspired me to draw a more simplistic version of a cat which I find myself doodling a lot. ( I will end up posting those later)
I ended up walking around Limerick searching for a mirror from many charity shops. I love finding little hidden gems in chariety shops and I ended up finding this little ceramics cat in the very Charity shop that I ended up finding the mirror!
Here's the little guy. I also really loved te little raccoon next to him. I imagine them being friends like an unlikely friendship!
Tumblr media
After finding said mirror I sort of just jumped right into it full force. I did make a little sketch beforehand on a piece of paper just to know what shape this cat should be in. I really wanted this cat to look similar to my first paintings I did during the first week of painting. My little movement cats. This is them but moving in a different way. Instead of stuck in motion the cat is moving from person to person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I used acrylic paint for the entire thing and here's the progress shots and final piece!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I ended up leaving this near the sign in sheets for the 1st years on the 1st floor with the note you can see. I was really happy to have many people respond and take pictures with my mirror so I truly thank EVERYONE who took part in any way <333
The process was very very enjoyable. I really felt like I could let loose. Which to me was unexpected because I felt like I would've been more worried of messing up on a mirror but it's was really the opposite. The paint went on very smoothely and it wasn't as patchy as I expected it to be. I only needed to do one coat of paint, however only some spots needed an extra touch up. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to do this. While working on this piece I had a meeting with Fiona. She really helped me figure out exactly how my project is connecting itself through out my disciplines. The way it's connecting is definitely my Mark making. The swirls. The stars. The lines the dots it's all present throughout all my work and as Fiona has said it's rather childish similar to the whole idea of my project which it's cats being silly and mischievous.

Artist research..
Vanessa Stockard
Tumblr media
Stockyard is an Australian painter most known for her work in which she sneaks her three adorable cats, Kevin The Kittin, his mom Fluff Ferstenberg and the head of the fluff family, Satan, into her paintings. Stockard’s process includes pieces developed without visual reference but rather from memory. She has a unique style and the outcome is adorably hilarious.
I take majour inspiration from her for a lot of my project because her and I have a very similar message for chaotic silliness in our work. Putting silly small cats in places they shouldn't be is funny and really inspiring for me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also really appreciate her way of painting it's hard yet beautiful regardless. I like the messy texture that her paint creates. It's very unique. The blending she does it also quite wonderful it's really pleasing to look at.
I want to use this similar idea for the rest if my project and including my idea with the mirror. I wanted to buy a mirror and stick it up in the college with a little painting cat. Many people can take pictures with it and the whole idea is that this little cat is "moving" between people and that's it's chaotic movement. Like how did this little kitty end up with so many different people??? :)

Photoshop?
I had unfortunately missed the introduction to photoshoo due to my CCS and Tutorial so I was quite clueless. I had a bit of previous experience but nothing meaningful. U really just wanted to mess around and try to understand what this program is and what I could do. I discovered you can draw and actually doing quite a little excited I wasn't expecting. I really like the drawing and colouring capabilities of photoshop and wanted to use that mainly for this piece.
I an using my previous thumbnails that I had created on Tuesday in the workshop. We created a other mind map to expand and pin point exactly on how we are exploring our ideas through.. I chose "Flow" (as in creative flow and movement), stuck and unpredictable. I had loads of of fun creating different thumbnail ideas for this project. I made a lot so here they are.....
Mind map.
Tumblr media
Thumbnail sketches...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the end we made the people around us vote for which we should do and then we had to expand on this and make it bigger! Here's my bigger version / final version of what I wanted it to look like :)))
Tumblr media
While in photoshop I didn't actually draw the cat as I was already struggling just drawing with a mouse so I decided to use the picture that had originally given me the inspiration to draw this!
Tumblr media
I used rough and scratch lines in places to make it appear as if it was drawn. The process of cutting out the background was nightmarish. I tried using the automatic way the program does for you but it cut it out so terribly so I ended up doing it myself. I zoomed in a lot and cut it out bit by bit. Some places were still a big choppy so I used a blur tool to smoothen it out so it looked a lot better. I was really satisfied with how easy it was so draw on photoshop. The mouse using part wasn't but it had everything you would need and a great varaity if colour. I enjoyed myself throughout. I ended up using my previous colour pallets which I have posted before hand :))
There was a lot a lot if different styles of brushes I could use which added to the fun!. The stars and swirlys came from my inspiration of the Baebadoobee posters I have posted earlier. I love how cute yet chaotic thy look and wanted to embody that.
Here it is! I ended up not doing the tail but I kind of regret it do I might add it tomorrow when I get the chance
Tumblr media
I started to try work on my original idea if making a rock star poster but I ran into a lot of difficulties. The pictures I have are too small and poorly taken so when I move them to photoshop they pixilate very badly and you can barely see what they even are. I attempted to fix this by looking up solutions but I myself couldn't fix it. I also struggled on how to move one picture to another picture instead of creating their different documents... It was really confusing...
But today u was wandering in EASONS when I came across the magazine section. I remembered how I enjoyed creating those magazine art and sonic began searching through them. I ended up finding this great one filled to the brim of fashion models strutting and posing to very interesting backgrounds. I thought it would be really funny to instead of making a rock star poster to creating a poster for a cats fashion show/ Runway (A meoway)
I thought I could use some of these pictures (I will post separately) to create the runway advertisement and to use the singular models to be the "headliners" at the runway. I'm thinking about using gouache and paining the to be cats instead of humans and changing their names into cat puns etc. Im debating on using Ms paint to digitally add stars and other sparkles because I like how weird and cubic the Ms paint brush is.

Posters I love <333
Beabadoobee (my favorite I really love the colours here. I feel like it would translate great into my project as it feels silly and almost chaotic)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These posters remind me of H4to cats
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Would be funny to have them in the audience of the poster :)
Nirvana( looks very serious and would be really funny to see them replaced with cats that look like they are in a proper band)
Tumblr media
BlackPink ( similar to Nirvana I like how professional it looks and would be silly to have cats here) the colours are also really pretty and the clear and consice way everything is communicated)
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I love this one for its simplicity and just randomness really like what's happening?? The art style is really silly too.

Graphic Design :)
This was probably one of my favorite arts of the workshop. We were tasked to create and art piece from a bunch of magazines. I never knew this was an actual art form I really only thought it was a hobby but, this presentation really opened up my eyes to a new form of art. This workshop really made me rethink what I want to do withing graphic design( I will get into this later) . We created a mind map that elaborated on our project and we decided to simplify it down into three words we would be exploring our topic with
After this our mindmaps were scattered around the room and we were tasked to find pieces that this person could use from magazines we randomly selected. I found this really really fun :)
I ended up accidentally creating a collage but I feel like it perfectly demonstrates what my project is really about at the core. The chaos of cats and their moment. How did they end up half human? What's it doing inside a bowl? Why is it inside an orange?? I just feel like this project is very silly and fun whcih is what I try to make it appear as. I made them black to kind of resemblance my previous piece I did during painting.
Tumblr media
After finding out I messed up (whoopppssiiieee) I started on the actual task... Create an art work! I siffted through so many magazines. Who knew it was this hard to find a cat??? I had some help and finally found two or at least I think one is a cat anyway... I decided it would be fun to put a cat in a location it's never allowed ( survey conducted among cat owners proved this) a dinner table. U collected scraps and cut up tons of bits. Here's my process :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really wanted to create this sense of movement in this like everything was flowing in some sort or chaos. The dinner table was perfect because it was elegent and something you woudont what to be messed up by a silly cat. I drew on many bits with pencil and even sharpie to make the piece blend in with the paper and with the other bits and pieces I stuck together. Over all I really liked this process it was really fun :)
What did I learn from this? Exactly how I want to execute my idea. I had this silly idea to create two posters. One was going to be an invitation to some sort of silly cat meeting. It ls idea is based off of where do cats go when we don't see them? I thought it would be really fun to add a bunch of really specific and random directions to get there for this silly meeting. My other idea was to create a music poster advertising a rock concert played byyyy cats! I was originally planning to create these posters on Adobe Photoshop but I really liked this process so I might give it a go. I doubt I will find all the pieces I need from magazines so I have accumulated a bunch of cat pictures from pintrest here they are :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I will continue to look for inspiration from actual magazines so it isn't entirely printed. I also looked into a few concert posters themselves and here's some that really caught my eye. .. ( I don't have enough space so I will post separately)

Graphic design!
Today was the first day of graphic design and it wasn't really what I expected it to be. We started of the workshop with a quick recap on what GDC is and how we should approach our project efficiently.
I found this really helpful I took some notes!
There was a slight mention of making thumbnails, mood boards and colour palletes. Im planning on making a mood board but for now I created a quick colour palletes I would wanna use for my future work. I used the website Coolors whcih made it extremely easy and fast.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were introduced to the idea of creating a persona for who our work would interest. I made one too and I tried to make it look fun an expressive!
Tumblr media
After this we began creating simple a quick blocky icons that somehow relate to out project idea. This was probably my favorite part. Limiting yourself to a few shapes and being forced to create something is really fun.
Here they are....
I started of simple and very literal by creating a little cat that looks like the Facebook icon when you don't have a profile picture. I thought the idea if making it resemble a cat would be funny
Tumblr media
I made another cat but here it's a bit more abstract. You can almost interpert it as a heart which makes it feel like it's a live of cats. (It's perfect for this project)
Tumblr media
I started to reach out a little and instead if making it just a cat I wanted to start making icons with things that cats are associated with. Here's a fish.
Tumblr media
A box where cats like to hide and bite the cardboard...
Tumblr media
A ball of yarn to okay with!
Tumblr media
And a little computer mouse whcih is meant to be a reference to an actual mouse. I decided to make it a computer mouse because I see these icons to be for a online website which funny because it's a digital mouse.
Tumblr media
For the second part of the workshop we went to the computers and began recreating these icons in Adobe Illustrator. The process was kind of difficult at the start. I felt it was similar to modeling because it felt equally as difficult. This I found a lot more fun. We were taught how to use all of the options in the programme and I took advantage of them. I really liked the gradient and the curved line they really carried my project amount the shape creator. I recreated my favorite icons and added colour to them. I will post better pictures after this ( I ran out of space) but my favorite it probably the computer mouse. I really played into the mouse part in this rendition with the ears and whiskers. The cat in the box is probably my other favorite. The yarn was so hard to do and I kept completely messing up. It was so a real struggle to deal with on this programme.

Painting :)
I've decided to continue this idea I have with movement. The idea is that cats always end up in the weirdest of places like anywhere they can fit they will. That to me is movement and I decided instead of painting just the cats moving I would do this to symbolize it instead. I used a lot of references from family members and the internet to make these paintings. This first one I call "Let him out! "
The process of this and all of these paintings are really fun because I can use two mediuns that I'm familiar and sort if confident in. I used a mixture of gouache and acrylic on both pieces. I thought the idea of a cat being stuck in a sock really funny and wanted to paint it. I tried to make the cat look as if it were sad and trapped unable to escape this "Sock jail". I used a dark blue background with black corners and making the cat look smaller to make it feel as if it was in peril. The final touch was the little tear 💧
Here's the progress pictures!
Sketch
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also did another painting with a similar theme with a really similar process. This kitty is stuck in between two slices of bread.... How did he get there?? Why did he get in there???? We will never know.. But he doesn't seem too upset

THE CAT RETURNS - STUDIO GHIBLI
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When a truck is about to run over a cat, high school girl Haru (Chizuru Ikewaki) saves it and finds that the cat is actually a prince by the name of Lune. Lune’s father, the Cat King, extends an offer of marriage to her as a token of appreciation. After being taken to the Cat Kingdom, Haru begins to take on feline characteristics. When she is stopped from leaving, two sculptures who have been miraculously brought to life, Toto and the Baron (Yoshihiko Hakamada), help her escape.
This movie is really in tune with what my project is sort of about. The cats in this film act VERY human and often walk on two legs ( see picture above) they even attend a Ball which has similar to one of the artists that i will speak about his name is ...
Louis Wain-
Louis William Wain was an English artist best known for his drawings of anthropomorphised cats and kittens. A lot of his paintings center around the idea of cats acting or being almost human. this is what i really like about his art and what i want to come across in my project. Like "how did that cat end up in that?" or "even cats can be gentlemen". Another thing that i adore about his art is how FULL OF LIFE AND COLOURFUL IT IS. Its my favorite thing in any piece of art
modern arry and arriet gouache
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also really love this mirror painting idea and definitely want to do something similar to this! :>>
Tumblr media
Into his later years he began to create these abstract looking cats which i find also very inspiring. I almost interpret them as movement of cats too. They kind of remind me of the images id see inside a kaleidoscope.. which to me is like movement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pieces like this were created after Wain was eventually admitted to hospital for schizophrenia. He continued to produce many drawings of gleeful and often outlandish cats, and his body of work demonstrated the therapeutic and restorative effect that closeness with animals can have on a person’s mental health too.
