The ghosts were always going to lose Alison, and they were always going to go back to being unseen ghosts in Button House.
Is it not better that they did the selfless thing and let Alison go to live her best life, and as a result got to live in a restored button house full of people and new adventures, rather than a lonely ruin of a house which Mike & Alison could never have afforded to repair/maintain in their lifetime?
The Merlin series is a tragedy of loving the wrong person. Uther loved Morgana but Morgana killed him. Morgana loved Morgause but her twisted ideals pushed her into the madness that was finally her undoing. Arthur loved Mordred but he betrayed him, same as Morgana and Agravaine. Gaius loved Uther and he couldn’t advise against him, even though on multiple times Uther had watched him be imprisoned, tortured, almost killed. Kilgarrah had love only for his kind, and Aithusa’s birth was more important to him than the future he’s been striving for. The druids loved Merlin and trusted him even when it became clear that he was not doing enough to bring about a time of magic and freedom, justice for their people. And as for Merlin, he loved Arthur. He loved him so much that sometime during the years Arthur’s life and friendship became much more valuable to him than his own life, his freedom, and even the magic that gave his existence meaning and purpose. Arthur became more precious to him than the lives of thousands of people, no matter who they were. He loved him more than he loved the truth and that became the downfall of everything they wanted to build together.
