K-Pop Spotlight: FYKE
We’re back with another K-pop spotlight! This time, we’re highlighting FYKE, an LA-based rock band formed in 2017 that tackles important social issues in their music. Their latest studio album, Disorder, focuses on topics like body positivity and mental health, and navigating these spaces in the age of social media. We caught up with the quintet ahead of their two-city tour with Kevin Woo and James Lee, KEVIN WOO X JAMES LEE FEATURING FYKE.
In your opinion, what’s the most interesting thing about you that people may not know?
With the exception of our guitarist Justin and perhaps Mikee, the rest of us are pretty introverted and socially awkward.
For someone who’s never listened to your music before, how would you describe your music/sound to them?
Emo pop haha.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten?
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5 NIV
Favorite thing about touring with Kevin Woo and James Lee?
Just being able to play shows with some of the coolest and most genuine people on earth =)
What’s one thing that scares you and one thing that excites you?
One thing that scares me is not knowing what tomorrow holds. It’s the same thing that excites me haha.
Biggest goals for the rest of this year?
We’d like to focus the remainder of the year sharing our new record and touring!
Your lyrics reference body positivity and mental health — can you tell us a little about your writing process and why you feel it’s important to highlight these issues?
For us, music is just a platform that we use to spread our message. We’re a band made up of individuals who have dealt with anxiety and depression all of our lives. It was important for us that we used our music to talk about these issues as society seems to cast a large shadow over it. Especially, when we live in a world consumed by social media where people are constantly comparing themselves to what they think perfection is. We see thousands and thousands of pictures that showcase what people want others to see. The perfect face, the perfect body, fancy cars, money…even music brags about material gain. We wanted to spread a message that was different because we know there are plenty of people that have felt or feel just as alone as we once did because we didn’t fit into the mold that society says we should fit in.

Hey Kevin Feige! The MCU better get with the program, AOS and Netflix have done most of these ‘diversity’ plays already in a way that didn’t feel forced. Like, the MCU’s suddenly going the diverse route after phase 3, once they saw how popular Black Panther and Captain Marvel got.

Incels and other sexist men can’t see a woman doing something incredible without fuming and trying to discredit her. They’re now dissing on Katie Bouman, who helped write one of the algorithms that got us the black hole picture, saying she was just an assistant (they don’t know what assistant professor is), and using Andrew Chael, her colleague in the Event Horizon Telescope team who helped write one of the codes, as ~the true person behind the codes who is being erased by this anti-men society~ or whatever. They’re even saying crap like “lmao women really don’t do shit”. Andrew took to Twitter himself to call bullshit on that.
If y'all can spread this thread to counter such narrative it’d be great.
