Different Spearfishing Methods
Tumblr media
When he isn’t attending classes at Santa Barbara City College or working on the Lauderdale Marina docks, Judson Russell Grosvenor is an avid world traveler who enjoys a broad spectrum of outdoor activities. One of Judson Russell Grosvenor’s favorite recreational pursuits is spearfishing.
A form of fishing with prehistoric origins, spearfishing involves piercing a fish with a spear rather than hooking it or trapping it in a net. There are several different methods of spearfishing, and each requires unique equipment.
Many people use spear guns to spearfish. The power, range, and accuracy of these devices is difficult to beat. However, spear guns aren’t allowed in many prime spearfishing locations worldwide. Furthermore, many people like the challenge of a less technical approach to spearfishing.
The simplest and most primitive form of spearfishing involves the use of a pole spear. The typical pole spear has an elastic loop on one end and a sharpened tip on other. By placing a hand in the elastic loop and pulling the loop taut, a diver can prepare for a strike. Upon release, the stored energy in the loop causes the spear to shoot forward. The closely related Hawaiian sling operates on much the same principle, but incorporates a hollow handle or “shooter.”
