Draft #1 of final thesis proposal
The question kinda scared me the most is that I found myself have no faith or interest in this plan right now and I can’t think of anything better. I don’t know what I’m doing at this department, especially with the Covid affecting everything I should get- resources, normal education and more. During the past week the only thing I did is making one illustration per day, trying out new method to quick finish a ‘finished’ illustration per day. I like doing that but that had nothing to do with the thesis project which I really want to make it great.
And I like just doing illustrations without thinking, but that happiness seems not to last; I can only enjoy making them at the same time thinking that ‘oh I have a thesis to do and I would like that to be my future direction no not illustration and definitely not trying to sell them on social networks since that’s kind the way of living for illustrators’
One thing also bothered me is that when I talked about this thesis plan with a friend for her opinion, she said that she had heard similar idea/story for too many times which she was not sure if any good new work can be made upon that. And that’s also one thing bothered me from the beginning. Even within our class we can see similar ideas bouncing around individual’s works, and it’s so hard to come up with even a bit different one.

WEEK 11 Beauty
- personal experiences of extreme beauty?
I can actually count out many of them. Some exact moment or time/space I’ve already forgot, but I think they have a shared common to me is that I kinda want to die within/in front of/ besides those experiencing moments.
It’s not like I am shocked or amazed by them, but more like feeling nothing at all and just want to let it go. The one I recall at this time while I am typing is about 5 years ago I went to Southern France for an art history summer course. I missed the plane so I was one day late as I was on the train from Paris to Avignon, and there were those train seats, an elder lady with her furry kitty in a basket, and all the summer view of trees, farms and sunshine went though the window.
The other one is almost at the same time period and it was seeing the sunset of Southern Pacific Ocean from a plane window as I was traveling to Peru. I took a picture of that, only to found out that how, seeing from today’s view, it’s nothing at all and worth not all the memories.
Now thinking of it I think these extreme beauty for me is often connected with landscape. One exception I can think of is also found during that trip to France, which is the moment when I finally found Nike of Samothrace in the Louvre Museum, which wasn’t hard to find at all but surprisingly I found it at last moment, when I only had half a day to visit the whole museum and need to catch the plane that night.
- Does beauty have a place in your art? Why or How or Why not etc?
I think that’s a question beyond doubt. For the illustration background I was coming from, I think one thing I seek so eagerly is beauty which can be confirmed by myself, that is, I made those beautiful illustrations. For that I put them on social networks and hope people could see and praise them, but only to realize that it can’t be gain by what others granted.
I think if something is meaningful then it will be beautiful. In the sense of art, beauty to me comes in a really wide range. That is, some work while people might view as ugly or offensive, I think I still can see beauty in them. I consider ‘not beauty’ more in a way like, if someone made a work with unconcern or indifference, but trying to pretend it was a thoughtful work by merely faking its meanings to others. I think those moments are pretty obvious to me.
What’s beauty anyway. Now I’m thinking of one sentence/setting that is frequently used in literature/film/songs. That is, summer has come and pass; there will be many other summers after this, but no one will be this summer.

Suggested adding features from critic:
Surveillance cameras for details inside the city/maze, and screens to show the camera pictures;
Add sound/video components project on the piece; In this case, video can be use like a light source to highlight parts of it, that is, creating a video that will create a spot light and Shift it to other parts of the sculpture. In that case, parts can be change by using the video;
Making my own paper with transparence and draw background stories on them, and make draperies attached to the piece.
