Blast From the Past: 2012
From now on, every Thursday, The J R Spot will be providing a little throwback, better known as Blast From the Past. We will be posting our favorite songs that were released before 2015. There are so many songs that people just scroll by and we want to open a few eyes and show others what they are missing.
Tumblr media
This first Blast From the Past comes from the oh-so talented, JoJo. She released this song under a mixtape entitled, Agápē, named after her little pup. She put together a brilliant piece of art, but there is one song that has always stood out. Take the Canyon.
Listen: https://soundcloud.com/jojoofficial/04-take-the-canyon
Now, if you haven't listened to JoJo since she left the scene in the late 00's, you will be very shocked to hear what she has to say now. Take the Canyon has a sexy, enticing, overbearing, and exhilarating sound as JoJo tells you a story of how she has a man on the side, and the struggle of enjoying another one's company even knowing deep down that you shouldn't be. Take the Canyon is easily one of my top 5 favorite songs ever. Please take the time and listen to the mixtape on her soundcloud. Here's to hoping 2015 is JoJo's year, I refuse to see her talent go to waste. (Also here's to hoping she releases the full studio version of Thinking Out Loud, which will probably make a future Blast From the Past post).
Favorite moments from "Take the Canyon": Her chuckle in the beginning-- gets me every time. The harmonies behind the chorus. The harmony/ad-lib on "home sick all the same" "So....I go to see him when I get the chance" The ad-libs towards the end (starting at the last chorus). "I'm gonna do what I gotta do! I'm gonna get to you, I-I'm"

J's Top 50 Songs of 2014: 1-10
*Please support all of these artists!*
1. Soda - Azealia Banks
Tumblr media
I had to give Azealia the number one spot after all of the endless mishaps that have occurred over the past 2.5 years, she finally released the masterpiece which is Broke With Expensive Taste. Other than that, Soda alone really does deserve the number one spot also. I can't tell you how obsessed I am with this song. It showed such a different side of Azealia that I never thought I would hear. I remember hearing this for the first time and before her vocals came in, I expected her to go hard and rap but I was shocked that she sung throughout the whole song. It makes me sad when I listen to it but then I'm distracted by the beat and then I just wanna dance. It's something that feels relatable and just really raw, all while a house beat bumps in the background.  Favorite Moment(s): The whole damn song, let's be honest. The opening, how everything comes together. "I try to hide behind tired eyes/I sigh..." "I say soda/I'm Iota/Yo sir/I ride roller-/I try all the cultures.." The way she layers and harmonizes "I used to be your girl". "Been too busy but I don't wanna deal with you..." Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EBUGcp4PC8
2. 90s Music - Kimbra
Tumblr media
I can talk about this song for hours on end. 90s Music has to be one of my favorite song of all time. I remember hearing it for the first time in shock because I never would’ve guessed Kimbra would do something like this. Actually, let’s be real, I never thought that anyone would do a song like this. All of my friends describe the song as ‘weird’ but weird isn’t a bad thing! And to the think she was going to scrap this song, I’m so glad she didn’t. She mixed so many elements and created this WHOLE new sound that I have never heard. I actually feel this way about her album The Golden Echo too, which I highly recommend also.I will never get tired of this masterpiece. Favorite Moment: EV-ER-Y-THING! The first few lines where she’s kind of rapping. The way she comes barging in after the first verse at 1:15 with “Someeee old song I know/Won’t get outta my head!”  That whole beat change! What!? Crazy. The name dropping “MJ and Mariah…” When the beat changes AGAIN with “And then the radio played that song we used to sing…hey…sometimes I think about it”  Listen: https://soundcloud.com/kimbramusic/kimbra-90s-music
3. Dreams (feat. Beyoncé)
Tumblr media
The songs that Boots produced on Beyonce’s record-breaking self-titled album are my favorites, so I was very excited to hear that he had music of his own. I checked out the ones he had on his soundcloud and I fell in love. He announced his mixtape along with the track listing which had a very mysterious ‘B’ feature. Well, not mysterious at all because who else would the ‘B’ be? Long story short, this is one of the best songs of 2014. Beyonce and Boots make the perfect team. Favorite Moment(s): Boots’ vocal on “We’ll always find a way…” When Beyonce kicks in with “All my life…” Beyonce’s ad-libs at 3:37 “All my life…all my life… all my life… dreamiiiiiiin’” at 3:37 up into end. She killed it. The note that Bey ends on at 4:48. I always end up crawled up in a little ball on the floor at the end of this song.  Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvzibuML_RA
4. Cadillac Song - Ariana Grande
Tumblr media
This is probably the most traditional R&B song Ariana has ever done and I am completely in love with it. I get modern Earth, Wind & Fire vibes from this. From the sample, to the classic R&B style vocals, I simply cannot get enough of it. Ariana sung for her damn life on this song. Sometimes I have to listen to it three times in a row when I go to play it. First I listen to the production: the beat, the sample. Next play is for Ariana’s main vocals. And the third play is for the background vocals and ad-libs. The album 'My Everything' was fantastic but this Target exclusive track really struck a nerve.  Favorite Moment(s): The sample. The bass guitar at 0:02. The “Oh we should’ve been forever/but we fell apart..” section. Her vocals on “I catch myself!” The damn melisma on “I still want *you*” at 2:20. The ad-libs from 2:37 to the end.  Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MwTr6jAr7E
5. Mascara - Jazmine Sullivan
Tumblr media
Jazmine Sullivan is finally coming back with an album! She has released two other songs, “Dumb (feat. Meek Mill)” and “Forever Don’t Last”. While both songs are great, Mascara is really a stand out track. The song touches on women who rely on their appearance in order to get attention, men and even money. Also about how you’ve got to watch out for the new girls who come out of the woodworks, so make sure you look good everywhere you go. The way Jazmine wrote this song is very tasteful and I recommend any Contemporary R&B fan to take a listen. One of the best released this year. Favorite Moment(s): The way she pleads “Don’t I deserve to be privileged? Don’t I deserve to get the very best?” Also the ad-libs after “’Cause they’re working so hard/while I’m working so smart” and the harmonies into the chorus. *wipes sweat* Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ed2nSh7QraY
6. Fuck 'Em Only We Know - Banks
Tumblr media
This song really makes me feel some kind of way. I always get in my feelings when I listen to it. Whether it’s a happy feeling or sad. This is a song that can NOT be background music. When you listen to it, that’s ALL you should be doing. The production is stellar, Banks sounds amazing on it and the lyrics are fantastic also. The lyrics are really what makes the song. I think that everyone wants, has, or has had someone who only fully understands the relationship you both have and all the silly shit you go through, no matter how sketchy it looks on the outside, it doesn’t matter because the other person totally gets it. And no one else’s opinion matters so fuck ‘em! Favorite Moment(s): The beginning of the song. When the bass kicks in during the beginning of the song. It hits me like a ton of bricks. When she starts singing the first verse. The chorus, my favorite line “I’d run away/I’d run away with you would you run with me?” sing, Banks, sing. :’( Listen: https://soundcloud.com/madradstudios/banks-fuck-em-only-we-know
7. Cherry Coffee - Kelela
Tumblr media
So another song that I discovered in late 2013 that I’ve been obsessed with all year. I don’t even know how to describe this song but it is so damn good. From the beginning where all of the elements come together, to her vocals, this song was on repeat for months. Favorite Moment(s): So my favorite lyric is “It’s a twisted cycle you’ve confused with love”. Her vocals on “Keep me up in bed/at night” and that whole bridge. Her ad-libs that start at 5:14. Listen: https://soundcloud.com/fadetomind/kelela-cherry-coffee-prod-jam
8. Idle Delilah - Azealia Banks
Tumblr media
Had to sneak Azealia back on the list with this one. From the singing then right back the rapping, Azealia delivered her classic style and of course I fell in love with it. Favorite Moment(s): The whole song. I can't even choose a favorite part. "I'll trade a dollar for your dime/Oh..." It's so much fun to rap the second verse. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiXn5u_GWrk
9. Give Up - FKA Twigs
Tumblr media
I found out about Twigs a few months after she released the Water Me music video. I fell in love immediately. There was something so captivating about her and her music and that really sparked my interest. LP1 was top 5 best efforts of 2014. And Give Up alone proves that. The airy vocals in the verses and sick production makes me weak in the knees. Favorite Moment(s): “I know that sometimes you wish I’d go/away/away”. The quick instrumentation change at 2:28. The background vocals under “I’m here to stay/to stay” at 2:32. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH-Gw4lAYp4
10. Shades of Cool - Lana Del Rey
Tumblr media
This song instantly became a favorite when Lana put it on iTunes as a promo single for Ultraviolence. Something about it is so classic. Her tone, the production, everything goes hand in hand. Definitely one of my top 5 favorite Lana songs. Favorite Moment(s): The hypnotizing lyrics, especially the chorus. “But you are unfixable…I can’t break through your world”. The guitar solo towards the end and how the music stops and she composes herself to sing the last chorus. The ad-libs towards the end. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJABBmAMXnY

J's Top 50 Songs of 2014: 11-19
11. Runaway - Brayton Bowman
Tumblr media
Brayton continues to deliver killer songs and Runaway was an instant fave. I was so obsessed with Privacy last year and that was my favorite up until Jaywalk, and then that was my favorite up until Runaway. His voice is really out of this world. Favorite Moment(s): The chorus. "Drop/drop/your bags/you don't need 'em!" The middle 8: "Runaway with you/If you want me to!/I could be yours/And you could be mine/" Woo. that whole part. Goosebumps. Listen: https://soundcloud.com/brayton/runaway-2
12. Tell Me - Danity Kane
Tumblr media
Danity Kane disappointed me more than any one else ever has this year in music, but I sort of forgive them after releasing the DK3 album (which sounded a bit unfinished, but what can ya do?!). I am most thankful for this gem (and Roulette) and after hearing this, it’s almost like none of their bullshit drama occurred. Tell Me is one of their best, and while I’m happy to have had the chance to hear the song, it makes me upset because I will never get to hear another sultry, R&B/Pop fused jam from them. Favorite Moment(s):  When the bass kicks in in the chorus. Dawn’s ad-libs all throughout the song, especially during the second pre-chorus. And her vocals during the second “One minute you let me fall..” Listen: https://soundcloud.com/official-danity-kane/tell-me
13. Caught Up in the Rapture - JoJo
Tumblr media
Should covers count in best of 2014 lists? Well, this cover deserves it. JoJo straight up kills the heck out of this Anita Baker cover. JoJo has always had a terrific voice, even at such a young age. But this! This showcases so much of what she can do and I’m so excited for the next album.
Favorite Moment(s): The harmony under “light my life” in the second verse. The way her vocals literally transcend into fifty different atmospheres at 3:35, when she goes back into the chorus towards the end with “I’m caught up in the rapture…” The melisma is breathtaking.  Listen: https://soundcloud.com/jojoofficial/jojo-caught-up-in-the-rapture
14. 5 (feat. Jaden) - Willow Smith
Tumblr media
I was speechless when I first heard this song. I fell in love with it immediately. Loved the Ta-Ku sample. Favorite Moment(s): "Can you feel the breeze?/The clouds are talking loud/And talking over me.." When she starts harmonizing at 1:29. Listen: https://soundcloud.com/dhatu/5-feat-jaden
15. Feeling Myself (feat. Beyoncé) - Nicki Minaj
Tumblr media
I had to choose between this and the Flawless remix but I really love this collaboration a bit more, for the mere fact that it feels more like a collab rather than Bey having just the chorus or Nicki just having a verse at the end of a song. Hit-Boy did his thing (even though I was there a liiiiittle bit more bass in this for a harder sound) Favorite Moment(s): "World stop/carry on" (of course). "Damn Nicki it's tight/I say yeah n*gga you right...". "I'm whippin' that work!/He diggin' that work!/I got it". When Bey repeats after Nicki and harmonizes with her towards the end. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_kbl8UvpKU
16. Lurk - The Neighbourhood
Tumblr media
I absolutely adore The Neighbourhood. I was hooked from the first time I heard Sweater Weather last summer. I Love You. was one of the best albums released in 2013. I am a huge Emile Haynie fan so hearing their work together was pure heaven. The hip-hop influence was slightly there on I Love You. but they took a huge leap with it on Lurk and their mix tape #000000 & #FFFFFF. They have quickly become my favorite band. Favorite Moment: The electric guitar all throughout and “I’m thinking we should ride…”  Listen: https://soundcloud.com/theneighbourhood/lurk
17. Trigger - Maluca Mala
Tumblr media
This is my favorite Maluca song. I was obsessed with Fluorescent Beige but this is truly Maluca's best. I can't wait to hear more from her. Everything about this song is great. Favorite Moment(s): The beginning. "Yeah you know you the one/You the..." And the chorus. Flawless. Listen: https://soundcloud.com/maluca-mala/trigger_single 18. Cocaine Model - ZHU
Tumblr media
Another random song I found on Soundcloud that I have no regrets about. Dope production. Such a great song.  Favorite Moment(s): "I will/I will/I will/ Never/Forget/The thrill". "If you give me what I want/I'll give it to you right back" The beat at the very end. Listen: https://soundcloud.com/zhu/cocaine-model
19. Wrote a Song About You - MNEK
Tumblr media
I found this song while on a soundcloud binge. I’ve been aware of MNEK for a little while but never checked out his full catalogue…. until I heard this song. After hearing this song I just had to check out the rest of his music and I am SO sold. This song is pure gold and I can totally relate to it because I, personally, have written a few songs about someone and even though they don’t deserve having a song about them, it’s a pretty good ass song with a sick melody. Favorite Moment(s): The delivery in “La la la/you broke my heart in two/I don’t know what to do/you got me so confused..” The first four lines of the second verse where he repeats and harmonizes the last few words of the line.  Listen: https://soundcloud.com/mnek-1/wrote-a-song-about-you

J's Top 50 Songs of 2014: 20-29
20. Stranger - Leo Kalyan
Tumblr media
Leo was another artist that I stumbled across on soundcloud. He has a really unique sound and I really have no idea who to compare him to, but he's freaking amazing. Breathe was my favorite of his until I heard Stranger. Favorite moment(s): The sample during "Now it’s only u and me/all i see is u and me …" and "As we walk around/In this strange new town, I’m lost" Listen: https://soundcloud.com/leokalyan/stranger
21. Motel Pool – Travis Garland
Tumblr media
So this was released in late 2013 but I was obsessed with it all of 2014. Travis mixed R&B, alternative & pop so smoothly into this song. His vocals are fantastic and the production is great. It has the typical Stereotypes production which is great, the glitchy sample all throughout. Favorite Moment(s): The harmonies in the chorus. Travis going completely off with the ad-libs in the last chorus. The riff at 3:46! Woo.   Listen: https://soundcloud.com/travisgarland/motelpool
22. EST - boots
Tumblr media
Such a moody song, but of course those are my favorite kind of songs because I’m a Cancer. Had to put Boots back on the list because this is such an amazing song. Lyrics and production are stellar. I love the sample that cuts in after the first few lines of the first verse. Favorite Moment(s): During the chorus where he harmonizes the hell out of “Every single time….” You have to listen closely in order to hear every detail during that part. Bliss! The way the sample cuts out at the end. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGg8hvk3QFc
 23. Maybe - Teyana Taylor
Tumblr media
It felt like decades waiting for Teyana('s label) to release this song on iTunes. I remember when she gave one radio station a first listen and I was obsessed. I had to listen to the low quality radio rip on soundcloud for almost a month. Once it was sent to iTunes, I immediately bought it and was even more obsessed. Definitely a highlight from the hip-hop releases of 2014. Favorite Moment(s): The chorus. It automatically makes you wanna dance. “Maybe it’s the liquor! Maybe it’s the song!” The vocals on “Maybe I’m in love” at the very end. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPnzXYrxoJA
24. My Afternoon Dream - Jhene Aiko
Tumblr media
While I love Souled Out, My Afternoon Dream has to be one of my favorite Jhene songs. This was the demo of Blue Dream, the version on her album. I definitely prefer the demo. This has such a classic Jhene sound (sounds like it belongs on the Sailing Soul(s) mix tape). Blue Dream is a bit more polished up than this, but I prefer Afternoon Dream because it has much more authentic sound to it. Favorite Moment: Her vocals on “My mind is open/so wide since you came inside/I feel so alive…”   Listen: https://soundcloud.com/jhene-aiko-1/my-afternoon-dream
25. LA LOVE (la la) - Fergie
Tumblr media
Now THIS particular release felt like decades, maybe because it almost was! I'm so glad that Fergie is back and 'excited' isn't even the word for when it comes to her releasing the album.  Favorite Moment(s): EVERYTHING. The verses especially. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQTqPRojc8Y
26. Chains - Nick Jonas
Tumblr media
Another unexpected release. This song made me excited to hear more from Nick and he did not disappoint. I love everything about this song. I’m quite sad that people did not pick up on this song the way they did with Jealous. Favorite Moment(s): His ad-lib for “change this love” at 2:07. I get weak in the knees every.single.time. And the “Baby tell me why/why you do/do me wrong” parts.  Listen: https://soundcloud.com/islandrecords/nick-jonas-chains
27. Rooftop - Zara Larsson
Tumblr media
Something about this song is so addictive. She doesn't even have music released in the USA yet but she needs to put this song on US iTunes ASAP! Favorite Moment: Her ad-libs during the last chorus.  Listen: https://soundcloud.com/flash-records/zara-larsson-rooftop
28. Happy Little Pill - Troye Sivan
Tumblr media
I’ve always been pretty aware of Troye Sivan because I was a YouTube fanatic (it has died down in the past couple months). When I heard that Troye was coming out with a project, I was unsure, and a bit worried that it might just be another YouTuber trying to sing/get a record deal (no shade). But when Troye uploaded a preview of this song! I was shocked and it was so unexpected. The chill production and his vocals were way better than I thought, I was excited to hear what else he had to offer. And low and behold, the EP he released (TRXYE) was superb. Favorite Moment: His delivery on the pre-chorus and chorus. “Cocaine/dollar bills/and/My happy little pill…” Listen: https://soundcloud.com/troye-sivan/happy-little-pill
29. B4 the Night Is Thru - Jesse Boykins III
Tumblr media
I don’t remember how I stumbled upon this neo-soul-esque bop but I’m glad I did. I love Jesse’s vocals and it’s produced by one of my faves Machinedrum, which is another plus! Favorite Moment: The lines that go into the chorus so smoothly “I’m talking to myself working up the nerve…” Listen: https://soundcloud.com/jesseboykinsiii/jesse-boykins-iii-b4-the-night-is-thru-prod-by-machine-drum

J's Top 50 Songs of 2014: 30-39
30. Kind of...Sometimes...Maybe - Jessie Ware
Tumblr media
I adore Jessie Ware, but when you add Miguel in the mix, it's seriously heaven. I love this song so much and I was so excited to hear Miguel pop up during some parts of the song. Favorite Moment: How everything seems to get to the boiling point in the last chorus and Jessie ad-libs the hell out of it. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rvqJd6JBME
31. Touch - Shift K3y
Tumblr media
Dance-pop, electronic, or whatever you wanna call it isn’t my favorite genre of music. I was a good 10 seconds away from cutting off this song and giving up on it but I’m SO glad that I didn’t. I absolutely fell in love with his vocal delivery on this track over this kind of beat. I was so thrown off guard and I have been in love ever since. Favorite Moment(s): His vocals on “And if she wants to/we can hold each others hands…” and him harmonizing on the second chorus. I love the melody so much. The chorus is a highlight also.  Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcYCFN5nnsQ
32. You Don't Know What To Do - Mariah Carey
Tumblr media
I cant believe Mariah or whoever at her label made this song go to waste! It’s such a fun classic Mariah song. The dramatic-diva intro, a rapper, the catchy chorus, it's an amazing combo. I will always have a special soft spot in my heart for Mariah, so judge me all ya want.  Favorite Moment: The chorus.  Listen: https://soundcloud.com/mary-mariah/mariah-carey-you-dont-know-what-to-do
33. 7/11 - Beyonce
Tumblr media
As an avid Beyonce fan, when I first heard this I must admit I was pissed. It sounded like the annoying rap songs that Hot 97 overplays, the ones that repeat the same lines over and over. Pretty much the songs that make you wanna change the radio so damn fast. But then! Beyonce dropped the genius video and I was hooked. It's so catchy and for some reason I don't mind the repetition now. It's just a song she did for fun and I totally respect that. Favorite Moment(s): "My feet up/And I kick it witcha!". The outro. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4YRWT_Aldo
34. Chandelier - Sia I still remember the night this leaked. I had to let someone know about this song ASAP. The first person I went to about it was Reuben, actually. I was so excited for someone to listen to it because I was really amazed at this song. How it went from a subtle R&B influenced verse, the building pre-chorus and then the chorus that just knocks you right out of the game. I’m so happy that radio supported this song. It is one of my favorite Sia songs. Favorite Moment: Obviously the chorus. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vjPBrBU-TM
35. Homie - Will
Tumblr media
This is a song by one of my best friends. I've seen him grow artistically over the years and I was really stunned by how much he has improved in his art in such a short amount of time. Homie is my favorite song off of the mixtape and I'm obsessed. The melody in the chorus is so catchy, which makes it come off as such a fun song but it's actually about serious stuff. Please check out the 'W' mixtape, it's good stuff! Favorite Moment: The chorus *bops furiously*  "Call me your homie/wrap you up/I'll keep you real cozy/tell the world that I'm your homie/I'll give you love/and love only" Listen: https://soundcloud.com/willfoshizzle/omiedem Download 'W':http://www.datpiff.com/Will-W-mixtape.668301.html
36. Drive, Pt. 1 - Ben Khan
Tumblr media
This song came on by accident while I was listening to another song on soundcloud. I'm so glad that I didn't click 'x' and continued listening. A few months later it was on a Victoria's Secret Commercial! Ben's voice and this production were made for each other. Favorite Moment(s): "I wanna steal the car/just for the thrill..." The breathing all throughout the song. Listen: https://soundcloud.com/benkhan/drive-part-i
37. All Them Boys - LIZ
Tumblr media
I adore LIZ so much. I love the way she has incorporated the 90s into her music and has captured it so well and put a bit of a modern spin on it. All of Them Boys is the perfect example of that. Favorite Moment(s): The atmospheric breakdown in the bridge and when the creaking sample sneaks in.  Listen: https://soundcloud.com/maddecent/liz-all-them-boys-jeff068
38. Pressure - The 1975
Tumblr media
Yes, I’m aware that this is a 2013 song. It was released in late 2013 and I have been obsessed all 2014 long! Definitely a highlight from their album. Really catchy and great production. Favorite moment(s): The mini break down with the saxophone. Also “Never gonna lie to you/my broken veins…”  Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dMFqFX1sVc
39. Teen Heat - Kimbra
Tumblr media
Had to add Kimbra to the list twice because I am completely obsessed with The Golden Echo and the whole era. I was so fascinated by the sounds and visuals she delivered. This song is super moody and gets really euphoric in the chorus. One of my faves on the album. Favorite Moment(s): How the beat changes in the chorus. "Cause I don't wanna die/Without knowing what it's like.." The second pre-chorus. "Can we lose ourselves/in the/moment!" and the ad-libs in the second pre-chorus. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHGRNUVqmas

J's Top 50 Songs of 2014: 40-50
40. Sweet Lover - Justin Nozuka
Tumblr media
So I’ve been an on and off Justin Nozuka fan ever since I heard “After Tonight”. I had no idea he was releasing an album this year and was stoked to hear it. The album was pretty solid but this one song stuck out the most. Favorite Moment(s): The first few lines. Every time he sings “Why…”. The chorus. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yM_8XExkeEY
41. On My Mind - Dornik
Tumblr media
Dornik always delivers a good bop. I was so obsessed with 'Something About You"'s groove, and I think that On My Mind has a similar vibe to it and is definitely Something About You's younger brother. It's a real throw back sound but still really fresh sounding at the same time. Favorite Moment: The harmonies throughout the song. 1:58-2:03 especially. Listen: https://soundcloud.com/dornik/on-my-mind
42.Together – Disclosure, SamSmith, Nile Rodgers & James Napier
Tumblr media
Another late 2013 song that I was obsessed with in 2014. Off of Sam Smith’s Nirvana E.P. I love the entire feel of this record. So laid back and Sam sounds amazing (*duh*) on it.  Favorite Moment: Sam’s harmonies during the chorus of course.  Listen: https://soundcloud.com/methodrecords/sam-smith-x-nile-rodgers-x
43. Fuck Texting - JUNGLEPUSSY
Tumblr media
JUNGLEPUSSY initially caught my attention with “Cream Team”. I loved her style and her lyrics are disgustingly good. Her LP Satisfaction Guaranteed is a must listen! Fuck Texting is definitely a stand out track.  Favorite moment: The WHOLE second verse. Her lyricism is super crazy during it. “You told me you love me…” part goes off every single time.  Listen: https://soundcloud.com/vice/junglepussys-fuck-texting-prod-by-shy-guy
44. Down On My Luck - Vic Mensa
Tumblr media
I love the entire feel of this song. Amazing throw back vibes from this. I'm so happy that radios are finally spinning this because it's such a great song. (this does deserve to be higher on the list, I know) The production is sick also. Favorite moment: The chorus. Listen: https://soundcloud.com/fuck-vic-mensa/down-on-my-luck
45. Sober - Childish Gambino
Tumblr media
I absolutely love when Gambino sings, so Sober was pure gold to my ears. Ever since Telegraph Ave, I've had this weird obsession with his singing and wondered why he didn't use it more, so when Sober came out it was like Christmas! The production is great also. Favorite Moment: Seriously obsessed with his vocals on "If you let it shine/you can free your mind/cause I know"during the first verse.  Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayLiAVJ6vTM
46. Classic (feat. Powers) - The Knocks
Tumblr media
A fun song that Reuben discovered while playing sims. Proof that playing Sims is the best thing in the world. I enjoy the simlish version as much as I enjoy the regular version. A undeniable bop. Favorite moment: The chorus. Listen:https://soundcloud.com/theknocks/classic-1
47. My Friend Has a Swimming Pool - Mausi
Tumblr media
Such a fun summer song. Every time I think of it, I think of having a pool or beach party and just dancing in my swim trunks while the sun sets. I really enjoy the production a lot. Favorite moment(s): “We make such a show/we want you to know” “Tonight/we stay out again…” and “We swim all through the night/and I move like I love it and I’m feeling alright”.  Listen: https://soundcloud.com/wearemausi/mausi-my-friend-has-a-swimming-pool
48. Dragons - Princess Nokia
Tumblr media
Princess Nokia dropped a sick mix tape this year and Dragons is my favorite one of the track. This song seriously makes me feel like I'm taking a trip through a video game. It's amazing. Dragons is produced by OWWWLS, another one of my favorite producers. Favorite moment: "A promise for a man/A royal, royal man/And you are just that man to me" Listen:https://soundcloud.com/wavy-spice/dragons-princess-nokia
49. URL Bad Man - Lily Allen
Tumblr media
This is such a fun song from Lily. I loved it from the first listen, especially when Alexander kisses his teeth at his mom calling him down for dinner. Lily has always had such a fun and witty songwriting style and URL Badman is one of my favorite songs of hers. Favorite moment: The bridge. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDlofPAOZy0
50.  Relax - Starchild
Tumblr media
I love the retro feel this song gives. Such a fun song to bop to or just chill out and listen. Favorite moment(s): Overall the whole production and the sample. The bridge, the repition of “I wanna get to where you are..”. Also the little breakdown towards the end. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_heMolhic0

The music producer Robert ‘Shea’ Taylor, who previously worked with Beyonce during B’Day. Apparently he also signed up for Beyonce’s upcoming album and he had a few interesting things to share:
Her music is pop with a little bit of rnb, but more “musical”.
It has an 80s feel to it but made modern.
It’s like michael jacksons music during his prime (thats what the album is gonna be like).
She has a song with Kanye West that’s suppose to be Amazing.
Her first single is huge and will premiere at the end of April.

This could be a reliable source...'Shea' was in the studio with Ne-Yo and Beyonce a few weeks ago. April is just around the corner, who's ready!?
