with dq2 completed i've now beaten every mainline dragon quest game besides 10 and can therefore craft my personal ranking
random thoughts:
- i don't think there's a single "bad" dragon quest game. all of them are oozing with charm (slurp) and have something to love, and of course the gameplay always scratches my eternal classic rpg itch
- THAT BEING SAID 2 sure tried my patience and is in D tier for a reason. it has good qualities that i think make it still worth playing for fans of the series, but i can confirm it's almost universally considered the worst in the series for very good reason LMAO
- 7 would be S tier if not for the major issues it has with navigating the world- especially inability to zoom while in the past, lack of shortcuts in/going to towns and dungeons, and the severe amount of backtracking with you functionally re-discovering each island twice (once in the past and once again in the present). even with that i'm still kinda tempted to bump it up to S ngl, i genuinely believe it's one of the best the series has to offer
- i think people undersell the original due to it being more barebones, sure it doesn't have all the bells and whistles or length of later games but it's well-paced and keeps the player from getting lost with well-placed clues. it's really fun and has a lot of heart
- my only real "controversial" opinion here is probably putting 9 > 5 but y'know what? i won't apologize for being correct. 9 is underrated for all it does
- 4 is the only game to have alena and also is responsible for the entire mystery dungeon genre's existence. 100/10

this shot at the end of the dragon quest monsters: the dark prince trailer is messing me up so bad. is it a prophetic vision psaro has? will this game intersect with chapter 5 of dragon quest 4? will the destruction of the hero's village be playable as the monsters?????
regardless of how this scene works into it, though, psaro never met the real hero when he destroyed their village- they were hidden underground the whole time and only came out after he left.
