What would the world be like without Graphic Design?

When given this question, my mind went straight to how dark and boring the world would be. The lack of colour would directly correlate with how we viewed everything! Graphic communication is everywhere and you may not even realise. The page you are viewing this on now most likely had a graphic designers input, the typography on your favourite album, the logo of your local over priced local coffee shop and so much more. Without graphic design everything in the world would be so incredibly plain, quite frankly I’m not sure how we as a society would function if the design industry just disappeared.

If graphic design just dropped off the face of the earth I think most people would heavily struggle to find a creative outlet. Most creators gather inspiration from everything around them- Pinterest, instagram, tumblr, books, films, advertisement, music etc. I know I would certainly struggle to be creative as being inspired is definitely one of the building blocks of creativity. Everyone is inspired by something no matter how small that may be. For example, advertisement, we are so heavily impacted by advertisements that even this influences how we work. I myself find that I will be putting a piece together, whether that be typography, an illustration or anything, and try to stay alway from certain colour combinations as they remind me so much of brands and companies (like red and white for Coke). So as you can see, you may not realise that you are essentially being taught to associate colours with certain brands.

Im not entirely sure what I would be doing if it wasn’t for graphic design? Maybe something to do with writing? Journalism? I’m not too sure. But I know that I would need to do something that involves being creative as I would struggle so much if it was just an office job. Creativity is how I express myself so without that Im sure I would be an incredibly boring person (well I’m not exactly the life of the party now but you get what I mean).

Overall I think that Graphic design plays an essential part in our lives even though we don’t actively recognise it. Without it life would be very much a plain and boring existence in my opinion.
