About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning

If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:

These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:

But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.

Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.

If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.

Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.

Asking aros to put down the overly defensive "well I still love! I still feel! I love in all these different ways!" and walk away slowly. Yes, it's true for you, but you're still equating your love with your merit; you're playing the game of arophobes. I get what it's trying to combat, but I don't think the solution is to continue to use love as a weapon rather than completely disarming it. Why is love the metric? Why is love what your worth is?

This is something I struggle with, because it was safer in the past, mentally and physically, for me to just do things myself. Asking for something? As best I’d be scoffed at; most of the time, treated with open contempt; and at worst, physically assaulted. It spanned EVERY relationship in my childhood and youth. My ex husband takes a lot of flack for being the first abusive relationship, but when I broke my hand as a child, it took my parents three hours to take me to the ER because they assumed I was exaggerating.

Not everyone in your life is so hateful. Find a safe person and start asking for simple things: a hug, a joke, reassurance. Get practice. Restore your ability to ask for what you need.

btw one of the key components of actually being in a healthy relationship is just asking for things that you want. i keep seeing posts on this website saying 'i really want to do/receive [X] but my partner has never done it'. just ask. 'nobody exchanges love letters anymore' ask. 'i want to have my partner's hair in a locket like the victorians' just ask. 'i want to be bought flowers regularly :((' literally just ask. your partner doesn't know they're being held to these expectations and that you're unhappy unless you tell them. it's so unfair to expect your partner to read your mind. 'it's less special if you have to ask :((' grow up and stop pretending you're the lead in a romcom. when people say communication is crucial they mean it !! just ask !!
