my mama seems to think she’s ugly no matter how many times people tells her she’s not
the retinol creams, anti aging serums, monthly strawberry blonde touch ups of her greying curls
how can she call me beautiful when I am nothing but a reflection of her, yet she seems to despise herself to such an extent?
our wide-set jaw, coarse thick hair, strong brows, skin dappled with dark sun spots and splatterings of freckles
they are all features that came from women in our line that must’ve been loved, cherished. known to be beautiful in their life by someone.
as i braid her hair, i tell her this, and she insists that i look nothing like her despite what everyone else says. my lips are too full, hair too straight, my lashes far too long for me to look like her.
i am an echo of her, and she of my great grandmother, and she of my great great grandmother, and so on and so forth.

"Mamaw? What makes the red dirt sacred?"
The red dirt was given to us by our ancestors, the great ones. It protects our skin from the sun, it heals wounds, it cures illnesses, it soothes the spirit and it helps guide us through world and afterlife.
Red dirt is often painted on the palms, soles, and face or hair for divination rituals. It is believed that when painted upon the feet it helps us to walk into the spirit worlds and others. Putting it upon the face or head helps us to speak with spirits of the dead as well as sleeping people. On the hands to help us feel what the spirit is feeling. It is painted on the forehead of newborns to guide their souls earthside and on the soles of the dead to ease their walk to the spirit land.
Red dirt is used in many healing remedies, it can be made into a face mask for acne and blemishes, a paste for wounds, and can be consumed to remedy stomach and digestive parasites.
Red dirt is also a very strong protective item. It can be sprinkled outside doorways and around perimeters of the property to ward off any wickedness or ill doers. It can be mixed with animal fat or coconut oil and used as a sun screen to protect the skin from burns.

Today is the celebration of Sara la Kali, the patron saint of the Romani! On this day, thousands of Catholic Roma go on a pilgrimage to Saint-Maries-de-la-Mer in France, to submerge her statue in the water and reenact her arrival to France. It is believed in Christian retellings that she was the servant of Mary Jacobe, one of the Three Marys who fled from persecution in the years upon the death of Christ. Over the years, many have noted similarities between Sara and the Hindu goddess Kali, right down to the similarities in how both figures are celebrated. Many believe Sara is the Catholicized version of Kali, possibly in an attempt to keep from being persecuted for worshipping a non-Christian god in predominantly Christian countries.

if you’re considering gender affirming care go through planned parenthood. i shit you not they do not make you go through all the bullshit (hopefully not but may be depending where you are) the only things i had to wait for with them were a wait list (a week) and for the pharmacy to fill (took so long my doc at PP just gave me what they had in stock because they care).
again take care and have extra precaution in areas that are more conservative, but if you travel to your nearest city you should be safer.
i did not need a note from my psychiatrist, instead they sat me with a social worker to ask some questions. it ended up not at all being about if i’m “trans enough” but just how i’m feeling, my experience, allergies and medical history. then they sent me to the doctor who reviewed and assessed health risks and gave me informed consent.
i was then trained by a member of staff to administer my own injections, and was given a choice between every method of testosterone (if i went with the gel, there would be a six hour period after applying each week i can’t touch my cats and they are absolute WHORES who love snuggles and i didn’t want them to transition too, so if that’s important to you, take it into consideration)
it was so much easier than going through a GP, who tended to shrug off everything i said, and wanted to take as much time as possible while i’m suffering with dysphoria. i fully reccommend going through planned parenthood because it is discreet, has options for payment with and without insurance, and will absolutely refer to you with the correct pronouns and name every. time.
and this is not an ad. i’m just sitting here before my third dose feeling thankful.
