I think a very interesting aspect of Kieran’s character arc is that they never stop liking Florian.
They become jealous, yes. They put up a more abrasive front, yes. They desperately want to defeat him in battle, yes!
But they never stop liking him. They never stop admiring him, as they, themself, admit. Kieran wants to prove that they’re not useless, and they do so by trying to rise above the most amazing person they know… Florian.
Kieran desperately wants to be with Florian, as his friend, but they also want to be Florian, because, in their eyes, to be Florian is to be good, and strong, and admirable and worthy.
They’re jealous, they’re aggressive, they’re obsessed with taking him down. But all of that stems from believing that Florian, as they say themself, is special. So anyone who can take Florian down must be even more so.
