Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)
“Speak Now” is probably my favorite Taylor Swift album. I bought the special Target edition with bonus tracks on release day in 2010.
Tonight, I’m listening to the just released “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)”. (I don’t have to wait until Target opens now, thanks to Apple Music.)
The songs sound different, but the same. I have the same emotional reaction to the music and lyrics from the newly recorded version of these familiar songs as I have with the original recordings.
The original “Speak Now” was released during a pivotal period in my life. The songs remind me of the changes in my life at that, either by my choice or someone else’s. They remind me of actual conversations I had with people in my life and conversations that I had imagined. They remind me of the hurt others inflicted on me with their words and choices and the hurt that I inflicted with mine.
The songs from Taylor Swift’s “Speak Now” era define a year in my life, from October 25, 2010 through the end October 2011, the year after the album was released. By the end of that time was I had turned 32, and to quote “Innocent” from “Speak Now”, “Thirty-Two and still growing up…”
Here’s to music that speaks to you, that makes you feel like you are not alone in your struggles and life lessons.
