Break Up Letter
This is just a short introduction. If you’d like, please feel free to skip to the beginning of the story. I’d like to think of this as my first real longer composition that I’ve felt comfortable enough to share. I’ve never had a problem writing something, I have a problem knowing when something is finished and how to share it. And, I guess due to the nature of the story, I’m shy about publishing…

My Spotify 2020 List and Covid-19
My Spotify 2020 List and Covid-19
So what does a Spotify playlist have to do with Covid-19? Every year Spotify releases a curated and animated visualization of a user’s listening data throughout the year. When I saw that people were sharing their Spotify listening data on social media, I began to wonder about my own. It’s something I look forward to every year, to be honest. When I opened my list and started listening to it, I…

The Nikon Z6 Gallery
The Nikon Z6 Gallery
A few days ago I purchased a new camera; the Nikon Z6. My other camera, a Nikon D5500, is still a perfectly capable camera and I’m going to miss some of the features it has but I wanted to supplement my gear with a kit with a better FPS count and that’s better suited for low-light photography.
I plan on taking and releasing more photos soon, as you’ll see below, monsoon season in Arizona is…

South of the Border, West of the Sun by Haruki Murakami - My Experience
South of the Border, West of the Sun by Haruki Murakami – My Experience
How would you handle the experience of reading a book that happens to parallel some of the heart-hurting events of your life? The names, times, and locations are different, but the events that happen to the main character, Hajime, are basically the same. Even Hajime’s age during the bulk of the story happens to be the age I am right now. It’s definitely a strange feeling but even stranger still…

Calligraphy Art
While I don’t have much artistic talent when it comes to to drawing something realistic or “painting” a super involved picture composed with dozens of interconnected layers, I do, however, have education in Japanese speaking, reading, and writing. So I wanted to combine that training with something artistic.
I’m trying to justify the amount I paid for the iPad Pro (2020), folio keyboard, and…

Charlotte: Scottsdale Canal Convergence 2019
Charlotte: Scottsdale Canal Convergence 2019
Hello again, everyone. It’s been a while since I’ve uploaded photos here. This past year I’ve been focused on trying to find a good balance between photography, reading, writing, fitness, travel, and work. It’s hard to sacrifice time for one to make for the other.
As a result, my photo mindset has changed quite a bit this year. Instead of worrying about the quantity of images I put out, I’d…

What to write?
What to write? Just a blog post with an update about something I've been working on.
It’s been quite a while, hasn’t it? I hope this post receives you in good health. I’m doing well. That’s actually a bit of an understatement as my life is pretty awesome right now. Over the past several months, I’ve been focusing on myself and trying to enjoy a more simple life. Reading, writing, running, gaining skills for work with the hopes of getting my life onto a trajectory for future…

Scottsdale Canal Convergance 2018
Scottsdale Canal Convergance 2018
Whispers were swirling of some sort of art festival exhibition thing happening in Scottsdale in some of the online Arizona photo groups. I wasn’t sure if I could go but when my friend who was flying in from NYC to be with her family for Thanksgiving, shared the link to this event, I made the time. We’ve had photography adventures in Tokyo, Las Vegas, and now our backyard in Scottsdale. We’ve…

Mesa Music Festival 2018
Mesa Music Festival 2018
When my friend invited me to go to the Mesa Music Festival, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I’m a bit out of photography practice so I figured I’d go and bring my camera along. We walked up and down Main Street in Downtown Mesa looking for interesting things and found a few places I may bring a model in the future. Because of my work schedule, I’m pretty comfortable shooting at night but I’ve…

When I first started to attempt portraiture, I put out a post in a Facebook Group looking for models. I was obviously and painfully new to all of this. Which I didn’t try to hide. I embraced it and was honest. The Group was welcoming and, to my surprise, a few girls responded but that was much more than I had expected. Charlotte was one of them and I never forgot that.
It took us quite a while to work together but she kept her word which I greatly respect. My work schedule is a bit abnormal as I don’t get off of work until 9pm on weekdays and she has to get up early in the morning but we were able to find some time to finally collaborate.
We met at The Sugar Bowl in Old Town Scottsdale on a Wednesday night and leisurely hunted for available light in the surrounding area. It was hot and humid but that didn’t stop us. We were still able to get several good shots in just the hour or so we had. She had a good eye for finding usable light while also keeping the mood fun with no pressure. She definitely made it easy for me to get photos like this.
Here are a few of the photos from our shoot together. Thank you again, Charlotte. You were great. You can find Charlotte @loveisparis on Instagram.
This photo was my favorite of the shoot.
We found a well lit hallway with this halo.
Charlotte smiling after I made a bad joke.
Sitting next to the golden cactus.
Charlotte sitting in front of the cactus and the lights reflecting in her glasses.
Another by the golden cactus and looking at the camera.
Photos were edited in Lightroom CC and certain selects were brought into Photoshop CC. Not much was done in Photoshop, though. I removed some straying hairs, brightened the reflections in the glasses, and changed the color of the cactus in one of the photos but that was about it. They made for good minimal retouching experience.
If you’re a model or aspiring model in the greater Phoenix area, and want to work together, feel free to reach out to me @joeyctru on IG and Twitter. I’d be glad to help you. Have a great day. 😀

It’s not often that a model reaches out to a photographer looking to set up a session. At least it isn’t for me. Not yet anyway. I guess that’s a goal down the line but for now, since I’m still pretty new at all of this, it was nice to get the encouragement. Of course I jumped at the chance to work with someone new and someone that had a vision of what they wanted to achieve.
She asked if I would do a shoot in her traditional Indian garb which I didn’t have a problem with at all. It was nice to work with someone that was assertive and goal driven. She knew that she had to put in the work just like I did. Networking and reaching out to as many photographers as she could to get herself out there. It just so happens that I had been scouting the downtown area for the past month or so for interesting, well lit locations to take models.
We didn’t have too much time together but still worked at getting some good photographs. Ria was great to collaborate with and you can find her @mzkhosa on Instagram.
So here are a just a few looks I got of Ria. The cool color temperature photos are used for my Instagram profile for portraits @joeyctru. Ria gave me some great photograph and post processing experience and feedback. Thanks again, Ria. 😀
Nikon D5500, Nikkor 50mm and 35mm 1.8f, edited in Lightroom CC with distracting elements removed in Photoshop CC.

I’ve always liked these emotional looks.
Another emotional pose.
In a blocked off area. People were watching from the bar.
I’m planning on working with more people soon as well as bringing more content in the near future. Thanks for stopping by and have a great rest of your week.

Through the Iris
When you’re just starting out in portraiture, it’s hard to find models to practice with. They’re skeptical of working with someone that doesn’t have a body of work to show. Most of my catalog is of travel photos which don’t exactly translate to portraiture. I’m finding it’s another beast all on its own. (more…)

Wednesday nights have long been my day, or rather night, of rest. Every other night I’m either going to the gym or for my run or I’m with friends on Friday nights and the weekend. Last year I used to go to a restaurant then the bar to have a few hump day drinks to unwind but lately I’ve been focusing more on my health, finances, and furthering my photography skills. So now, Wednesday nights have been saved for downtown exploration and night photography for practice.
After a few weeks of walking the downtown area solo, I decided to invite a few people along to join me. I posted in a Facebook group of Arizona Photographers and Models thinking nobody would take since it was at night but just so happens a few people did.
One photographer and a model showed up. We walked around the downtown area looking for good light to use. I was happy to show them some of my favorite spots and let me know that they had a good time collaborating. Thank you to Isaac and Nikki for tagging along. You were great to work with.
It definitely was a challenge trying to work in such unpredictable conditions. My gear isn’t suited for low light and night photography but I still made it work. I had several unfocused shots as I had a low shutter speed while also trying to keep the ISO below 2000. I still feel I got several usable shots. I’ve been using my 35mm 1.8 but I think I’ll switch to my 50mm as I think it has a more reliable and faster auto focusing system. Regardless, I had so much fun doing this and plan on doing it again.
Here are a few photos from the shoot. Follow Nikki (@nikkifieldsbaby) and Isaac  (@falling_freely_) on Instagram.
I hope you all enjoy the photos. More models and photos are coming soon.
