Hidden Figures: Final Outcome
1. Savetlana Savitskaya
2. Claudia Colvin
3. Mary Seacole
4. Stanislav Petrov
5. Alice Coachman
6. Lincoln Beachey
FINAL REFLECTION ON FMP
Overall, I feel very happy with my final outcome for my idea of 'Hidden Figures'. I feel that through my collages I have successfully achieved my goals of highlighting stories of various different types of people from history who did amazing things but are not recognised for it in the modern day, as well as talking about societal issues that made these people hidden, through my work. Covering various aspects of their lives was important for me, as all of the people that I chose had different societal problems that altered their lives and made their work even harder, which should be recognised.
I hope that through my work, the audience will want to educate themselves on people such as these and celebrate them for their lives and have had an emotional response to the reasons why they were hidden from history.
If I were to recreate this project again, I would use more physical collage aspects throughout my work, as due to the circumstances, I couldn't show my work physically, which meant I focused more on creating collages digitally rather than physically.

cutout a stencil of nurse and two wounded soldiers then screenprinted on dark background as the background of the collage is dark. unfortunately the image lost a bit of detail so I added the digital image on top of it to create a highlight effect. I purposefully made the image overlap onto the rest of the collage to make it seem more unified as a piece rather than split into two halfs. I also placed it on the horizon so it looks like they are walking off into the distance

progress on collage of Lincoln Beachey as of 17/05/21 pt2
- I cutout a stencil of one of Beachey's planes then screenprinted on white background, and in photoshop took away the background and transformed the image through reflecting it and scaling it up so it looks like the plane is flying low and close past the crowd, similarly to how Beachey would've done.
- I added a navy background to the plane to create more of a scene and add colour to my work so it was cohesive with my other collages which have sections of colour in them too

- With this collage, I wanted to add more of the spectacle of his work into my collage, so firstly I switched out the original inverted image of him flying and replaced it with a crash image to show the highs and lows of Beachey's career.
- In the right side of the collage I wanted to create the idea of a spectacle, so i collaged together a wide angle photo of a backdrop for one of his flights alongside a large crowd. Next, I'm going to take the cutout of the plane and make a screenprint image of it to fit in the sky.

progress on collage of Savetlana Savitskaya as of 17/05/21 pt2
- To finish off this collage I wanted to add more traditional collage elements to this piece as well as add touches of colour to a mainly monotone piece. To do this I added scanned pieces of coloured card and paper over the silhouette images to make them stand out from the background but also link to the touches of colour in the spacesuit and the pen signature

- I wanted to focus more on how Savitskaya had to overcome sexism in the workplace and the sexist culture of Russia at the time. To show this I placed a silhouette of three russian women and removed it from the background and placed in the background of space to show that Savitskaya was a trailblazer in allowing women to become successful astronauts. In the Silhouette I collaged a poster from Soviet Russia which says 'Hail the equality of soviet women
- I also collaged the image of Savetlana at the top of the collaged elevator to space as i thought it similarly symbolised her success at getting to the top of her profession despite the odds and also paving the way for other future female astronauts to do the same

To finish off this collage, I created stencil screenprinted in black to get clear contrasting image. I then put the screenprinted image into photoshop and changed the colours to link to the colour scheme of this piece and stand out from the black and white background. I put a paper background behind the screenprinted images to help this.

- I added more scrap paper textures to create a physical collage idea as I though the piece looked to digital and I want a handmade style to show through all of the pieces.
- I added image of police supervision and protesters to add tension and show anger. With the protester I will create a stencil screenprint and scan it in, and with the police bikes, I will use the torn edges filter and place that on a scanned piece of paper to add to the hand collaged idea.

- In the background of the jumping image I added a newspaper texture to create context to how important her win was for African-American’s in sports. However I thought the words were too big and took away from the image so I  changed it to a collage of different newspaper articles which I think makes the rest of the collage easier to see, as there is a lot of different sections and pieces which could make it too cluttered very easily.
- I removed the podium image from this collage as I decided I wanted to show the journey from the start to the beginning and the struggles Coachman had to go through instead of just her success as that is what makes her story so great. To do this, in the top right I created a halftone image of an all-white athletics race and contrasted it below with an image that represents Coachman running on dirt tracks and practicing her sport alone with homemade hurdles made out of twigs, which is realistic to what she actually did. I added a dirty paper background to the top right image to add more physical collage aspects into this piece and link to the idea of having to work hard and get dirty to reach the top. I also thought about adding her name to create a more poster style piece of work but decided against it as I want my imagery to be focused on rather than typography.
- Finally I changed normal image of Coachman doing the high jump to halftone image brown and black to fit colour scheme of the collage and make the piece seem cohesive and structured.

progress on collage of Stanislav Petrov progress as of 10/05/21 pt2
- I tried to use the portraits from my previous work and in invert them into the collage however, I decided against it as I wanted the pain and suffering shown through the emotions of Petrov’s face to be shown clearly and for him to be facing away the officials as it helps show how Petrov was dismissed and fired from his job with out any praise for what he had done as it embarrassed the government and scientists at the time .
- To finish the collage I added images from Russia at the time of the incident to separate the two sides of the government and Petrov and show the difference between normal life and what could’ve been if Petrov didn’t make his decision that saved the world.

- I removed the screen-print style images and replaced them with one larger image of Petrov looking away as through research into imagery, I found a line graphic that I used to cut the images into smaller fragmented sections which mimicked the idea of a nuclear explosion.
- I also changed the background of the scene of the officials watching what would’ve happened if Petrov didn’t save the world, from blue to more a firey and aggressive red and orange colour and collaged an image a nuclear bomb being paraded through Russia to highlight the alternative story.

- I decided to focus on the idea of the Bus Boycott that Rosa Parks was the face of, but months before Claudette Colvin started. Using the halftone filter to link to the portraits of Colvin I wanted to show how influential the boycott was by letting the image of people leaving and joining the buses take up the whole background. Next with this collage, I want to add some screen printed images to highlight the boycott even more and show the pain and panic of the time.

- I decided to collage a sign from the very same olympics that is featured in the rest of the collage of Coachman as I thought it represented her story well, as Coachman had to fight against racism and not being able to compete or train like other athletes for many years because of her race, and the fact that she even got to the olympics in the first place is important as many people would have given up after being held back for so long.
- I also rotated the image of Coachman to show more movement and expression and make it seem as if she jumping out of the image.
