For the drawing style, I am taking a reference from Ernest and Celestine (2012)

I like how the line strokes are not connected almost like it is jittering. It gives the anxious feeling where i need for my character since he is using too much sleeping pills and got anxious.

I also like colour. I feel like it gives a calm feeling. I would also like to apply this to my concept art.

Since my character is an immigrant from highland to lowland, i wanted to make him live a bit far away from the town. Preferably in a small cottage. (Figure 1-4).

Adding the stuff that my character would have in his house. (Figure 5-8)

I made a small cottage made from bricks and woods with a pentagon shape. It gives a confined space for the character which looks comfortable and kinda similar to a bird’s nest. I also made an axonometric view of the building and put all the stuff there just to get some rough ideas about positioning the stuff inside the house (Figure 9).

(Figure 10) I wanted the concept art to be either showing him inside the house sleeping while doing his architectural work or showing him outside and showing the environment and the town from afar.

Building Reserch

Turns out that Caledonian forest is a given name of ‘Temperate coniferous forest’ which is a type of forest where the seasons are summer and winter.

So,basically, the forest could be anywhere in Scotland.

I chose a small town called ‘Killin’ for research because it is located in the scotland lowlands, and near a forest. I wanted to make my character an immigrant from highland from lowland. So people from lowland think that the buildings he designs are unique.

Not only they use a fly plaid, there more things such as kilt, sporran, Sgian-dubh, brooch, knife pin. ( Figure 3: the real objects) (Figure :1 for names and information)

From those research, i tried to apply the scottish element for my character. I used the square pattern for the materials.But also, i kept iterating.

Figure 1 & 2 : different types of walking sticks

Figure 3 : Some scottish have red hair where i think it is unique. I wanted to apply it to my character since the S.Crossbill birds have bold color for male birds which could be orange or red.

Figure 4: Anxious expression. Since my character consumes sleeping pills, one of side effects of too much consuming sleeping pills is making people anxious.

Figure 5 : research on architect blueprints since my character is an architect.

Figure 6 : Highland Scotland people outfit. Scotland people have a unique outfit which cant be found anywhere else.

Figure 7 : They call it Fly plaid. It is usually used while wearing the outfit. The size can be 8.2 meters by length. They put and attach it on their shoulder by using a pin. It has a function as well where during cold days, they can unfold it and wear it to protect them from the cold.

Figure 8, 9, & 10 : they unfold and use it with different wearing styles.

I kept iterating using a brush pen to get the shape that looks good for him. I tried to apply the walking sticks to his hands (Figure.1) and tried to figure out how he will be standing on the ground. He could be crawling like a spider or stand normally like a human.(Figure.2) how his body size will be. But at the end. i chose him to be fat since the S.Crossbill birds are commonly fat.

The character will be standing using the walking sticks to sustain his huge body.

To get more ideas for the charatcer design, I went back to do the mindmaps again and achieved some new ideas

I started from the words ‘Fugacious’ and ‘To go cold turkey’ (Figure 1) I connected those words and gained the world ‘Sleeping’ which connects those two (Process : Fugacious = tend to flee/ run away. The character tends to runaway and get a break from his busy life by sleeping. To go cold Turkey = to stop something immediately and dratically. Where the character has a busy life and wants to stop it by consuming sleeping pills. After that, I also did the new mindmap for the word “Scottish Crossbill” (Figure 2) I adapted some attibutes from the bird “Scottish Crossbill” which are:

S.Crossbill Unique fly : I applied it to how my character will move. In this case. My character has small legs which are weak. So, he needed a walking wand to assist him and also sustain his heavy body while standing and walking.

S.Crossbill bill/beak : the scottish crossbills use their bill to tweak pinecones and use their tongue to grab the seed. From that, i adapted the word “tweaking” to my character so my character uses his wand as the main aspect from him that is interesting (Since The main interesting aspect of scottish crossbill is their bill). So my character willl use his walking stck as a guide so he can walk and move obstacles in front of him.

S.Crossbill melodious call : the crosbill birds have voices that are melodious to human ears. From this, i used it for my character’s occupiation. He is an architect. His works are amazing and will be liked by people in the town.

Note: Since the bird is from scotland. I have applied some scottish attributes for him as well.
