Assignment - Final
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are my final shots and for these i actually used a tripod and ND filters. I did shoot at St.Mary’s church and Low Pavement but i ended up not using those shots because they weren’t good due to the fact they were either too over exposed (even though i used ND filters), not enough movement or not visible movement.

Assignment - Plan
I am going to shot on Maid Marian Way and low Pavement road. I feel as if these two places have the most movement while not being over crowd by people. Both places are different though because Maid Marian Way is where to go to get vehicles going past and Low Pavement is where to go to get people walking past.
I have decided to shoot in the late afternoon because the sun is going down a bit so the light will be less harsh so i can have my exposure on for a longer time.
During my shoot there is some potential problems that could occur. The time of day i have chose to shoot in is still pretty bright so in order to avoid this problem i could use some ND filters. Also the human hand can only hold something still for 0.6 of a second and i want to do the exposure of up to 10 seconds so i’ll need to take a tripod with me.

Assignment - time slowed down
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like these pictures because they all have red in the motion blur which makes them stand out but in particular i like the second image because on the temple like thing being the focal point and the fact that the rails are like leading lines towards. Also rule of thirds have been used to put the temple like thing in the first third with the horizon on the line. I think this is effective because it makes it look like the photographer has really thought about the composition of the photo and not just placed a tripod down and put a camera on it and just took a photo but they have angled it all up so that it is some what symmetrical.
The first and third picture i like but they are pretty basic because they don’t have a very good composition. They don’t have a focal point, leading lines, rule of thirds, symmetry or pattern. By the photos not following any of these rules there are pretty boring because i feel as if there just pointless and have had no thought put in to them and the photographer has just took them because they needed some work.
My image is going to have a stronger narrative compared to these pictures because i’m going to actually have a plan and know what I’m going to do so i can get straight to it.

Milk strip
Tumblr media
In this task we were using the default flash on our cameras and using materials such as tea bag filters, plastic cup and a strip of plastic milk bottle.
The first image of both people is just the default flash. Usually this causes shark eye, this is where the models eye is just pure black. In pictures you don’t want the eye just to be pure black because it makes he person look lifeless and plain.
The second images of both people are using the plastic cup. These make the eyes of the people have a glint (catch light). The cup made the photo have a nice contrast and made each colour stand out. It made the flash less harsh so that it wasn’t just white.
The third image of both people is using a plastic cup. We cut the bottom of it out and put it over our flashes.I think this was the worst one because the flash is still really bright and makes the individual too white.
The fourth image of both people is using a strip from a milk bottle. I think that this was the best one because a nice about of light is emitted showing the true complexion of the individuals skin.

Portraiture photography
Skills required
Director skills - being good with people and knowing exactly what you’re doing at the time because it all would’ve been pre planned.
People skills - being able to chat.
Be able to pose your model - this is slightly involved with people skills because in order to pose your model you need to be vocal with how you want them to pose.
Good research skills - this need because before you go to a shoot, you need to checkout the location to know what back drops there are for your model to stand infant of.
Time keeping - being punctual because no one would like a photographer that turned up half an hour late to a wedding and you’ve missed all the critical shots such as the bride walking down the isle and the groom seeing his bride all dressed up.
Matching the clothing to the theme of the photo shoot.
Equipment required
Camera - Full frame
Lenses - 70 mm - 200 mm ( this is because the 200 MM zoom you can get a real low aperture such as 2.8 getting a real dramatic depth of field and focusing on the model)
Backdrop
Lighting - Flash gun, studio (soft box, umbrella)
Tripod - only for low light (below 1/60 of a second)
Filters
Software - for editing after so using software such as photoshop but that’s quite expensive.
Monitors - to see your images blown up so you can really see the detail of your work and whether anything else needs to be tweaked.
Reflectors - to make the flash or natural daylight reflect nicely off the models completion because if not then it could end up being over exposed afterwards.

Man VS Nature
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were set a task to go out and take pictures of where man (man made buildings and things) is against nature. I focused on taking pictures of where nature had  overruled and took over because i thought they were the most interesting and had the most features to be aesthetically pleasing.
I shot with my 50MM lens because its f.number is 1.8 so i could get a real dramatic depth of field for it to focus on the nature taking back its areas. I am quite happy with how my shots have turned out because i think that they all really show the true ‘Man VS Nature’.
Just to make sure the shots were to there best potential i used photoshop to make them a little less exposed because some of them were over exposed and needed to be brought down just a bit.

Shutter speed
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here we were set a task to go out and take pictures at different shutter speeds. I used a tripod but i didn’t have no ND filter so most my pictures are either under exposed or over exposed.
Although being slightly under exposed i think that it is the best shot that i got. The f number was 25, shutter speed was 1.6 seconds and ISO 100. These settings worked quite nicely with the shot and it was an alright outcome. I think that my shots could be improved a lot and i hope they are much better in the future and i’ll use the correct equipment (ND filters).

Trying to shoot like Saul Leiter
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this task we went out and shot like Saul Leiter. I followed his route of taking shots of reflections and bright coloured umbrellas. I quite like my shots that i decided to use for my final ones because i feel as if they follow his work or at least somewhere along the lines of it. On this day we were quite lucky because it had rained so there were puddles to make reflections also there were some childern playing in the fountains with a red umbrella and that is exactly how Leiter composed his shots, and without the other person being aware.

Photoshop - faceswap
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this task we were told to pick two pictures of our choice from the internet and swap their faces. To make the task some what easier to do, i picked similar pictures of both Blue Ivy and North West also choosing pictures with the highest resolution. I put Blue Ivy’s face on to North West’s body.
Firstly i used the ‘Pen tool’ (P)  to crop out Blue Ivy’s face leaving extra skin but avoiding the ears. After I cut her face, I made it into a ‘selection’ and chose the feather radius of 10 pixels.
After this i then used the ‘Move tool’ (V) and dragged the image from one tab to the other still not letting go until Blue Ivy’s face was over North’s face. I changed the opacity of Blue’s face so that I align it with North’s features so that it would look some what ‘normal’.To help me align it I used the ‘Transformation tool’ (Ctrl + T) to make sure that Blue’s face didn’t go obscure i held ‘Shift’ to resize it.
Thirdly I went on the layers and on Blue’s face I put a ‘Mask’ layer on it. After that I used the brush to blend in the two different complexions.
I then saved it as a JPEG file. I reckon I did relatively well with this task and the two images seem to blend into each other nicely.

Wedding photos
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What's wrong with each photo?
Each photo besides the first one have something wrong with them. The second one has got the composition wrong because without the heads of the people it is a pretty ambiguous and any individual could use it and on a special day like this you would want faces in it to remember the happy day of you and your partner starting a life together.
The third photo is location and composition because on a wedding day couples usually pick areas that have lotsmoft wildlife or somewhere with a beautiful view to get their pictures took so that not just the people look formal but so that the location fits with the occasion. The fourth picture is quite clearly the same, no one would pick a place like this for their wedding photos.
By changing the typical conventions of a wedding it completely changes the whole meaning of the pictures. If wedding pictures were to be took like this then i think that if i was to see them i would think that the couple don't really mean a lot to each other because they haven't picked a nice location to get their pictures took so they don’t really want to treasure the day. its a whole new perspective and i never really thought about it before but this goes to show that the conventions of photos are actually vital.

Oj Simpson Contoversy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was such a controversy about the way ‘Time’ had edited the photo because the image had been darkened, this led to accusations of the editor being called racist because people thought that they were trying to make Oj Simpson ‘blacker’. This caused a backlash on the Time magazine because the community had an outcry although the ‘Time’ sneakily started putting the unaltered image on because of peoples reactions.
I think that both these articles are over-dramatic because the man was found not to be guilty but in these times racism was still a problem in the American community.

WHY DO PHOTOGRAPHS MAKE US FEEL THINGS?
Tumblr media
This photograph was took in 1936 during the Great Depression, California, by a photographer called Dorothea Lange and the image is called “Migrant Mother”. From this image you would think that the woman didn't know her photo was being taken but she did, she just had other things to worry about such as what her and her children were going to do and where they were going to live. This image gave quite a powerful message to the public of 1936 as it went world wide and everyone was going through the same struggle.
What are the four criteria for a good photograph? How many of them does a photograph need to meet in order to be good?
There are four key features a photograph needs to meet the exceptions of in order to be a “perfect” photograph but each photograph should at least meet one of the exceptions. For a photo to be “good” it should:
Be composed in a way which it pleases the eye.
Make us feel something.
Show us something new.
Tell a story/communicates a message.
Why do photographs make us feel things?
Photos seem real
Our capacity for empathy
Our common experiences
Our universal humanity
I think that this image is pleasing to the eye because it really showed the reality of what was going on in the world at the time, the fact that the mother has her two boys hugging up to her while their picture is being captured. She knows that her photo is being took but she has bigger problems to deal with than that so she is focusing on what she needs to do.
The picture makes us see the harsh reality of the struggling mother failing to provide for her children but they don’t care because as long as they have their mother then everything will be okay. It makes us feel real sympathy for this little family because who knows what the future might bring them or if it’ll bring them anything...
The photographer was staying to communicate the message of that there is always struggle in the world but we don’t always see it and here it is captured at its finest. I think because it s in black and white it gives it more of a dramatic effect.

Tilt Shift Lens
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A tilt shift lens is also commonly known as a perspective control lens, it is a specialised lens that has the ability to moderately rotate the image focal plane with a pitch, as well as skew the image perspective. Tilt shift lens are incredible for centre and edge sharpness, perspective control and for miniaturisation.

Fisheye Lens
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fisheye lens are an extremely wide angled lens that can be used in virtually anything, such as things like sporting events like biking, skateboarding, snowboarding and skiing. These particular sports in shot with a fisheye can give a feel of immersion.
Landscapes are good to capture with the fish eye because you can get more in the shot but in a funny shape.
