ok….so, for a few weeks now, i have been aware of a drawing that is VERY much like my “i want to pet all the dogs”/”i want all the cats to love me best” drawings. (her’s is the one in color.) because i just returned from a vacation to an email inbox full of people asking me about it i have reluctantly decided to say something.
i spent a lot of time working on the wording of those specific pieces, as well as drawing them myself by hand. they were created by me with the specific idea of making merchandise out of them that i would sell. i have by no means gotten rich out of making them, and neither have the fine people of silver sprocket who not only print these items, but also handle the sales and packaging and sending of the items to our customers and friends…so you’re not stealing from walmart, you’re stealing from people like yourself.
i believe that the artist in question copied my art. either intentionally, or accidentally after seeing my art somewhere online. they are just too similar for me to believe otherwise, and her other art on her blog does not lead me to believe that this was the work of independent thought. when the similarities were brought to the artist’s attention she responded that she had not copied me, and later apologized (sort of) and gave a link to my art on the post. however, she has never reached out to me, has not admitted wrong doing, nor has she removed the (plagiarized) work in question from her blog.
i am not a confrontational person and i have been at a loss as to where to proceed. she clearly is not a professional artist. she is not personally benefiting financially from her drawing.
but i do feel that the act of copying mine diminishes some of the value mine held. after all, an omnipresent image loses its inherent value, both artistically and commercially. right? why would someone wear a shirt advertising a cliche?
so do i know about it?
yeah, i know.
am i upset?
yes. losing sleep upset. her work has been reblogged almost as much as my originals have, and, in internet power points, that means it is just as valued to the unknowing eye as mine would have been.
do i know what to do about it?
not a clue.
but thanks for the support you guys, i appreciate you looking out for me.
