“West Philippine Sea”
In light of China’s increasingly bellicose rhetoric and recent incursions in the South China Sea, you were among the first leading Filipino figures to call for a more “assertive” position by the Philippine government by drafting a resolution that called upon the executive branch to rename the South China Sea as the “West Philippine Sea.” Was this proposal more of a symbolic gesture, or a tactical move to strengthen our claims in the Spratly islands?
Of course, the primary battle was at the politico-psychological level. If you keep on calling a site the South China Sea, it subliminally connotes some kind of “possession” by China. This is in light of the fact that often times our actions and thoughts are guided and shaped by forces that operate on the subliminal level. For us Filipinos, calling the area the West Philippine Sea marks a subliminal paradigm change. Suddenly the name that always carried China is now changed. This was a psychological blow to China.

Ever heard of a Filipina engineer at the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA)?
Mind you, she is the boss of a department – her job description being the Head of Advanced Engineering Development Branch at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. It means that she is the one who gets to choose the wonderfully intelligent people who are going to work for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Her name is Josephine Santiago-Bond, born in the United States while her parents were working on their PhDs but proudly presents herself as having grown up in the Philippines.
“I grew up in the Philippines, a country that I dearly love as much as I’ve come to love the United States which I now call my home,” says Santiago-Bond in her Women at NASA profile.
She recalls leaving her home at the young age of 12 to study at the Philippine Science High School, an experience Santiago-Bond says opened the world of engineering to her.
In a NASA introduction video Santiago-Bond talked about dreaming of being an engineer when she was young, and playing around with indicator acids that her mother brought home.
“I love the color combinations that I got from playing with that kit. That created a very vivid memory that really influenced me to get into the sciences,” shares the Filipina engineer.
At 17 years old she entered the University of the Philippines to take up Electronics and Communications Engineering – a complete turnaround from the expectation of following a career path in the medical professions of her parents and siblings.
“I have experienced first-hand how an impressionable child can grow to love science and engineering by simply being exposed to it. I believe that encouragement to pursue these careers from family and other institutions go a long way, and so does awareness of one’s capabilities and potential,” adds Santiago-Bond.
fter graduating from UP she went back to the US to work on her Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at the South Dakota State University which fortunately led to a summer job in John F. Kennedy Space Center. One thing led to another and the rest, as they say, is history. The Filipina became part of NASA in 2003.
Before becoming chief of her department, Santiago-Bond was a systems engineer who solved technical problems of space missions, and actually worked on a lunar mission in 2017. Her 2018 introduction video at NASA revealed her new mission to grow a family and anticipating a challenging work-life balance that allows her to be with her family while working at NASA.
“NASA has given me plenty of opportunities to grow as an engineer and as a leader. It is my honor to be working where my values align with the agency’s values.
I believe in giving back to the society that helped shape me, and the ways that I’ve been able to give back by doing my assigned tasks the best way I can, and by participating in education and outreach activities, both locally and internationally, in behalf of NASA,” the Filipina engineer writes on her NASA bio.
As one of the Women at NASA, Josephine Santiago-Bond’s experience and success in her chosen field is a testament to hard work, perseverance and the ability to seize the right opportunities at the right time.

Facts about space
1) One million Earths could fit inside the sun – and the sun is considered an average-size star.
2) For years it was believed that Earth was the only planet in our solar system with liquid water. More recently, NASA revealed its strongest evidence yet that there is intermittent running water on Mars, too!
3) Comets are leftovers from the creation of our solar system about 4.5 billion years ago – they consist of sand, ice and carbon dioxide.
4) You wouldn’t be able to walk on Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus or Neptune because they have no solid surface!
5) If you could fly a plane to Pluto, the trip would take more than 800 years!
6) Space junk is any human-made object orbiting Earth that no longer serves a useful purpose. Scientists estimate there are about 500,000 pieces of space junk today, including fragments from rockets and satellites, and everyday items like spanners dropped during construction of the International Space Station!
7) An asteroid about the size of a car enters Earth’s atmosphere roughly once a year – but it burns up before it reaches us. Phew!
8) The highest mountain known to man is on an asteroid called Vesta. Measuring a whopping 22km in height, it is three times as tall as Mount Everest!
9) There are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on all the beaches on Earth. That’s at least a billion trillion!
10) The sunset on Mars appears blue.
And now, it’s time for the lowdown on the planets of our solar system to one seriously sick beat! Just a word of warning – you might end up singing the song in your head all day!

China says the South China Sea has belonged to it for centuries. This is why it claims "historical rights" over the disputed sea.
Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio of the Philippine Supreme Court, however, says that "even if true," these historical rights have no bearing on sea disputes under UNCLOS. Carpio explains that UNCLOS "extinguished all historical rights of other states." This UN convention instead gives each coastal state

Top 5 my favorite anime
1. The wallflower - The Wallflower is about a girl named Sunako who was called ugly by the first and only person to whom she confessed her love. This incident sparks a life change, and as a result Sunako shuns all forms of beauty, both in herself as well as in life. Concerned by her change for the worst, Sunako's aunt, the owner of a huge mansion where four very handsome high school students live (for free), demands the boys to transform her niece into the "perfect lady," and in return they will be able to continue living there for free. They are given a deadline and if they are unable to uphold their deal then they would have to either pay a lump sum of cash or vacate the premises. While the four of them manage to make Sunako physically beautiful enough to become a lady, the problem lies with her attitude and interests (which Sunako has no intention of changing). Up until the most recent release in the story, they manage to convince Sunako's aunt that her niece is indeed a lady befitting the mansion in which they live (and prevent the rent from skyrocketing to triple the required amount). However, in reality Sunako has not changed at all. Sunako has the tendency to spurt out in a nose bleed when seen by bright creatures, especially around Kyohei. It is a humorous tale following Sunako and the four boys through unusual and ridiculous situations where Sunako is confronted with many unwanted experiences of being a lady, while also channeling the idea of self and beauty.
2. Angels beats - The Angel Beats! anime series follows the story of Yuzuru Otonashi, a boy who lost his memories of life after death. Upon awakening in the afterlife, he meets Yuri Nakamura, a strong-willed girl who invites him to join the Shinda Sekai Sensen (SSS) (死んだ世界戦線, lit.
3. Seven deadly sins - The Seven Deadly Sins were once an active group of knights in the region of Britannia (ブリタニア Buritania), who disbanded after they supposedly plotted to overthrow the Liones Kingdom (リオネス王国 Rionesu Ōkoku). Their supposed defeat came at the hands of the Holy Knights, but rumors continued to persist that they were still alive. Ten years later, the Holy Knights staged a coup d'état and captured the king, becoming the new, tyrannical rulers of the kingdom. The third princess, Elizabeth Liones, then starts out on a journey to find the Seven Deadly Sins and enlist their help in taking back the kingdom from the Holy Knights.
4. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day - What is the story about? On the surface, Anohana is the story of Menma, a girl who dies in an accident, then returns as a ghost to haunt her best friend, Jintan, five years later. The problem is, neither Menma or Jintan know why she has returned. ... Thus the story is ostensibly about them trying to figure out Menma's wish and fulfill it.
5. Grave of the fireflies - One of the best movie anime of them all , i love it because it has a vibe of World War II and its based on True story about Description A devastating meditation on the human cost of war, this animated tale follows Seita (Tsutomu Tatsumi), a teenager charged with the care of his younger sister, Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi), after an American firebombing during World War II separates the two children from their parents. Their tale of survival is as heartbreaking as it is true to life. The siblings rely completely on each other and struggle against all odds to stay together and stay alive.
