QUAND CESSERONT VOS TRAITS...
Quand cesseront vos traits de la prendre pour cible,
ce coeur que vous fites sensible
et dont vous n'avez pas pitié,
Seigneur? Ah! sauvez-nous de l'amour impossible
et de la déserte amitié!
Paul Géraldy
(1885-1983)

Anonymous female specimen by Michael Mapes
Artist Michael Mapes uses an eclectic mix of materials—cosmetic samples, fingernail clippings, glass vials, fake eyelashes, nail polish, handwriting samples, feathers, pantyhose, hair strands, pill capsules—to create images
By using scientific terminology—materials are “biographical DNA,” sources are “pharmaceutical,” artworks named with “specimen”—Mapes characterizes his works as structured investigations of visual culture. He once described himself as having “the spirit of a painter—in a lab coat,” and it is precisely with this perspective that Mapes builds a complex body of works.
