I Thought I Lost You

Description: You go on a secret mission by yourself, and things go very wrong. Bucky rushes to save you, the love of his life. 

Authors Note: I hope you guys enjoy this story!! I really enjoyed writing this. 

The moonlight shone through the window and let a silver beam of light pass through and illuminate the room. It was 2 am, but sleep seemed to be evading you. You look over at Bucky’s sleeping form next to you, as his chest rhythmically rises and falls. A feeling of sadness washes over you as you continue to watch him peacefully sleep. Tomorrow you have a secret mission that not even the other avengers know about. The mission is dangerous, and you know you may not come back from it alive, but you know you have to do it.

 It was yesterday that one of the shield agents approached you. The agent had found intel relating to Bucky’s hydra days. She told you the intel contained secret information about the brainwashing Hydra had done to Bucky and how to reset him back to the window soldier if he was ever found after escaping. As soon as she told you this information, you knew what you had to do. Bucky had worked so hard to move past his winter soldier days. It would break your heart if someone was able to return him back to his assassin days. You took a deep breath and looked over at Bucky one more time before closing your eyes to try to sleep before your mission. 

The morning seemed to come almost instantly. You were awoken by the sound of your alarm clock going off at 5:00am sharp. You inhaled deeply, preparing for your dangerous mission. The agent had arranged for the quinjet to be available at 6am sharp. From there, the quinjet would take you to a remote area of Siberia where the intel was being kept. You quickly got ready, grabbing all your usual guns and knives. Once you were done getting ready, you walked over to Bucky’s side of the bed and softly kissed his forehead. You knew that if this mission went wrong, you would never see him again. 

At 6am, you boarded the quinjet, ready to start your mission. You briefly glanced over the mission plan as you flew to your destination. You nervously clutched the golden necklace that rested over the crevice of your breasts. You open the locket that was adorned at the bottom of the chain; inside was a picture of you and Bucky from your first mission together. Steve had taken the photo, not knowing that you and Bucky would soon fall in love and become completely inseparable. You closed the locket and let out a breath you didn’t even realize you had been holding in. “I have to do this for him,” you thought to yourself, reminding yourself of the importance of what you’re doing. 

After what seemed like forever, the quinjet finally landed at its location. The quinjet door opened to the bitter Siberian landscape. Snow flew towards you as you exited the plane. You pulled out your radar and followed the beeping red dot to your destination. You were close enough to the hidden hydra base that you wouldn’t be in the snow for more than 10 minutes. As you trudged through the snow, the beeping red dot became larger, signaling you were at your destination. As you looked up from the radar, the abandoned hydra base came into view. A chill went down your spine as you wondered if this was one of the places Hydra had held bucky in. You shook the thought away and refocused. “Remember the plan, Y/N, you get into the base, find the intel, upload it to the flash drive, immediately transmit the information on the flash drive to SHIELD, then get out of the base as soon as possible.” You ran the plan through your head, making sure you knew every step. With a deep breath, you walked into the Hydra base, beginning your mission. You found the intel in record time, completing the transfer onto the flash drive very quickly. It was easy… almost too easy. As you completed the last step of the plan and began transmitting the information to SHIELD. You heard the door to the base slowly open. Your heart sank to your stomach as you prayed the transfer would be completed quick enough for you to get out. “The base was supposed to be empty,” you internally said to yourself as you panicked. Finally, the transfer was done. You hurriedly grabbed the flash drive, preparing to get back to the quinjet as fast as you could. As you turned around to leave, you were met with the sight of a hydra agent. He had an eerie smirk on his face as two other agents joined behind him. Your heart felt like it stopped as you realized you truly may not get out of this alive. 

*Bucky’s POV*

 Bucky woke up to your side of the bed being empty. “That’s weird,” he thought to himself; you hadn’t mentioned a mission or early training today. He shrugged off the strange dread that sat at the bottom of his stomach. “She probably had something come up,” he thought to himself, trying to rationalize your absence. He exited your shared room and went to the kitchen, where Steve and Nat were sitting and bickering. He poured himself coffee and sipped it as he tried to wake himself up. “Anybody seen Y/N?” he asked Steve and Nat. “Nope, she must’ve left early for something,” Nat shrugged. Something just didn’t seem right to him. Almost as though the deep connection you two shared was alerting him to your imminent danger. Suddenly, Natasha’s phone began to ring. She looked at the caller ID which had your name displayed across the screen. “Actually, Y/Ns calling me now,” she spoke as she went to answer the phone. “What’s up, Y/N?” Natasha cheerfully answered the phone. Her expression immediately changed to one of concern as she heard your pained voice whisper on the other line. Her heart felt like it stopped as you spoke the words, “I’ve been ambushed on a mission. I’m hurt”. As Bucky noticed the immediate change in her expression, his heart filled with dread. “What’s going on?” he hurriedly spoke, fear lacing every word. “Y/N’s been ambushed on a mission. She’s hurt” Natasha spoke. “Y/N, we’re sending backup to you right now. I have your location tracked from this phone call. Please try to hold on,” Natasha tried to calm you down. Bucky jumped up from his seat and grabbed his gun, immediately heading up to the second quinjet that was available on the roof. Fear and anger coursed through his veins. He felt fear for you, not knowing what condition you would be in as the team tried to get to you; he felt anger for whoever had hurt you, knowing when he got to them, he would unleash that rage on them. Bucky, Nat, and Steve rushed to start the quinjet and head to your location. 

*Your POV*

You had managed to fight off the several hydra agents that ambushed you, but you had been injured in the process. You suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen. You lay with your back to the wall as you tried to put pressure on the wound. Your breathing was sporadic as pain laced every breath you took. You held on to your locket and looked at your beloved Bucky as you prepared for what might be your last hours if help didn’t get to you. Your eyes began to feel heavy, and keeping them open felt like the hardest thing you’ve ever done. As the enticing feeling of exhaustion became too much to resist, you closed your eyes, and your body slid to the ground. As you lay unconscious on the ground, the door burst open seeming and Bucky rushed into the base, desperate to find you. Finally, Bucky entered the intel room, your unconscious body being a terrifying sight. He rushed over to you as tears stung his eyes. “Please be alive,” he panicked as he checked for a pulse. He breathed a slight sigh of relief as he realized you had a pulse, but it was weak, and he knew that if he didn’t get you out of there, you might not make it. He picked up your limp body and held you close in his arms as he rushed to get you out of there. Steve and Nat were waiting back at the quinjet as they watched his large form running to the quinjet with you in his arms. The door to the quinjet slammed shut as he brought you inside. He and Nat rushed to provide any medical attention they could while Steve captained the plane to get you guys out of there. “Please be ok,” he repeated like a mantra as tears stained his face. He could only pray that you would make it out of this. 

*2 days later*

You slowly blinked open your eyes as you took in the stark white room that surrounded you. You glanced down at your arm as you noticed the IV giving you fluids. You saw Bucky slumped, sleeping on the couch beside your hospital bed. “Bucky,” you weakly whispered. His eyes fluttered open to meet yours, and he rushed to your side as he realized you were awake. Relief flooded his body as he finally knew you would be ok. “When I found you unconscious in the base, I was so scared I had lost you,” he whispered as a tear fell down his cheek. “I’m right here, baby. I’m ok,” you tried to assure him as tears threatened to spill from your eyes. He released a deep breath as his body finally untensed for the first time in days. “Try to get some rest, baby; I’ll be by your side when you wake up.” He spoke as he placed a gentle kiss on your forehead. He held your hand as you closed your eyes, feeling relieved that you had completed the mission and somehow made it back to Bucky alive. When you woke up several hours later, he was by your side as promised, still gently holding your soft hand in his.
