Opinion: The Count of  Monte Cristo could have been much more tragic if Edmond returned and saw that everyone would be better off without him. Mercedes is pleased. She survived the grief and is now a happy wife and mother. She loves her children. Fernard becomes an affectionate and loving father. He values Mercedes and Albert. Villefort repented of his deed. He used his chance and is now defending innocent people in court.
Edmond sees their happiness. Edmond realizes that he has no place in their lives. And he never had.
