Me: Everyone deserves to feel good about themselves.
Others: Yes! Omg, yes!
Me: Even fat people.
Others: Ummm
Me: Even fat people who are unhealthy.
Others: Errrr
Me: Even unhealthy fat people who don't want to lose weight deserve to feel good about themselves.
Others: Wow no.

Mother's Day
by Cubone Pokémon #104
The first time I heard my mother’s voice she called me a fighter. When I felt her muscles strain around me I did not mistake her name for safety.
She cradled her abdomen,   hands soft as moonlight, certain we had the same definition of what it would mean to survive her.
She hummed the tempo of march formation until each shared rise and fall of our chests resonated the hollow of a battle drum.  I assumed birth was just the beginning of a head count.
Did you earn your way into the world? How hard did you fight for your first breath? I was born blood drunk on marrow. I cracked every rib of my mother, unfolded each one with my mouth like maps on conquest. I left the vertebrae intact and used the broken handles like a ladder. I climbed my way into her skull pressed it onto me like the return of the crown to a monarch.
I ripped out the long bone of her leg and chewed the end down to splinters. I sharpened my teeth on the edge her screaming. The walls around me became flint to whittle points to the tips of my fingers. I waited so long in the dark.
I wonder if I am shaped wrong. I do not know how to fit against a warm body. I was never taught how to hold the living only how to drop them in beat.
When everything else is quiet, I can still hear you humming in here. They’ve written that in the middle of the night they can hear the soft scraping of salt against skull. I have etched rivers into the smooth back of my cheek. They write of me weeping.
I have decimated cities to cover up this failure.
I can count each groove. They are real. I do not believe they belong to me. Warriors know nothing of losing. Promise me I still sound like a war hymn, that I still look like a fighter who took your body for an arena.
On the last night of battle after I have conquered everything and burned a field into the middle of the carnage I will look barefaced at the moon. It is the closest thing I can call familiar. I will hold up, as offer, the only piece I have of you.
My first words will come worn and heavy— “Is this survival? Did I win?”

why do people always pull hip-hop and rap as a misogynist area of music? yes, many rappers are misogynistic, but it’s not the only genre. let’s talk about country music, about the preacher’s daughter trope, the cutoff jeans, the get-her-drunk mentality; let’s talk about pop music, about the drugs and the clubs and the possessive “love songs”; let’s talk about alternative music, about “she’s not like other girls” and the manic pixie dream girl; let’s talk about classical music, about the exclusion of women now and in history.
let’s talk about how everyone’s first reaction is to villainize a primarily black genre before criticizing literally anyone else.
