Man, yeah, I'm tired of the narrative that empathy = humanity

Not only humans are not unique animals to have empathy (or in any case capable of acting compassionately), some people don't feel empathy and it doesn't automatically translates into them being horrible monsters, and it's an ableist thing to claim otherwise. It's kinda like claiming that one can't have morality without religion – while it might be true for some really specific individuals for which it might be helpful to some extent, it isn't true in a general sense. So the same way not having religion doesn't automatically mean one has no morality, not being able to feel empathy doesn't automatically translates into people being evil and cruel or incapable of acting (and willingly choosing to act) in compassionate ways. Cruelty arguably on the contrary requires empathy to exist.

Not american. Recently saw a few examples of people getting enraged about someone referring to someone else as brother/sister, noting it as racist. I lack the context and I don't get it, can someone please explain?
