Hello! This is my first time applying for a zine and I was wondering what would a feature piece for a merch artist look like?

Hi!

Feature pieces are just the best three examples of your work. Depending on which of your works are your favorites, it’s totally fine for these to be photos, mock-ups, or just the art of your merch designs. Try to make sure that your best design skills are on display even if you’ve never actually produced merch before—this typically is character-centric work. If you’re most interested in designing a certain item, like keychains, it may be best to include potential or past design for that product. Here is our guide for building a portfolio that includes some advice on merch in case you missed it! If this doesn’t answer your questions, feel free to ask more or message us directly. Best of luck on your application!

Earlier today, I was working on part of The Pilgrim’s Progress and wrote something that made me think of a cursed AU concept where Wirt still becomes the Beast, but decides to remain a ‘normal’ ‘human’ teenager in our world, too. So basically he’s going back and forth from the Unknown (which is a LOT more accessible now that its place-spirit is actually from another world), trying to figure out this ‘purifying the forest’ thing (he has a lot of really weird Google searches) while also doing bio homework and babysitting Greg. 

Amy: Weren’t you two feet shorter last night? Wirt: …Puberty? Amy: And what happened to your voice? Wirt: Also puberty.

Sara: Wirt, you’re blushing and it’s black. I think you have some kind of horrific blood disease.

(He comes up with some truly horrible lies trying to cover all this up.)

And just. In spring, when his antlers bloom, he smells like flowers for two weeks straight and nobody knows why. Then autumn comes and his hair is changing colors, and did that falling leaf just appear out of thin air? And the house is just crawling with black turtles everywhere because he needs to delegate, okay? This job is hard, and they’re surprisingly helpful. And half the lawns on the block need to be mowed twice a day or else. The guy next door left for a week and came back to a young forest. It’s even worse in Wirt’s house because if you don’t eat the fruits and veggies quickly enough, they WILL start sprouting. (Look, these plants have never had magic before, so they’re just really enthusiastic about it.)

Eventually Amy drags him to the doctor’s to get his flu shot and his skin keeps breaking the needle, so he’s kind of forced to confess to his family (also the poor nurse, who did not sign up for This Nonsense). Greg responds by making him do his “awesome shadow stuff” for Halloween, so they have a very convincing haunted house. (Wirt gets a lot of compliments on his costume. How did he make his eyes glow like that?) And sooner or later the entire town knows that something’s up with that Wirt kid–it’s hard not to notice–and the local homeowners’ association shows up at their door asking him to please Knock It Off with the plants, it’s getting ridiculous. Wirt kind of stammers denials for a minute before apologizing and assuring them that he’s getting better, he’ll try.

After that, he doesn’t care as much about hiding, so he’ll bring eldritch tomes and those fertilizer-and-dirt sandwiches Greg insists on making him to school. The local gardeners recruit him for help, albeit only occasionally (the Unknown is his first priority), and he becomes a sort of urban legend. Nobody is surprised when he disappears to “become a forester” immediately after graduating high school, only occasionally popping up for family events and whatnot. (His 10-year high school reunion is… particularly memorable.)

Just… Beast Wirt in our world, trying and failing to human.
