What have you learned about yourself doing this self-directed assignment?
I’ve learned that my first ideas aren’t always the greatest but if I apply myself more and push my thoughts I can achieve some pretty cool things
What did you find to be the most difficult aspect of your chosen assignment? Creativity? Research? Connecting design to research? Craft? Organizational skills? Time management? Something else entirely?
Time management was a struggle, but everyone I think goes through that when given a long deadline. I felt I also struggled with coming up with ideas that weren’t too literal in the beginning of each stage but once I found a solid idea it would take off so it wasn’t too bad
What did you enjoy about this opportunity?
I enjoyed the craft aspect of these projects, it was fun to actually make things with my hands and 4/ 5 of my projects this term were actually all handmade. It was fun to step away from the digital side of things for a bit and get messy.
How would you rate your performance over the course of the semester?
Not sure how to answer this one, I think I worked hard but it was definitely tough at times and my ideas that I sometimes presented weren’t to my full ability.
Hindsight is 20/20. What would you do differently, now that you've had the opportunity to work this way?
Maybe at the beginning of the year I wouldn’t have been so reserved in asking for help from my peers, they were really helpful to bounce ideas off of when I was stuck and I hope I helped them the same way.
Update on 3D — The cranes fit in the balloons! Success! The middle is a little off centre but with all the attempts that went into making this happen, it’ll do!
Ties back to coruscate as the Northern Lights are known to dance and flicker light across the sky
3D
Ties back to coruscate through the light and darkness of the definition. Without the absence of light you can’t have the flash, glitter or sparkle of light. The cranes were essentially the light of Sadako Sasaki’s to get through her pain which was the darkness.
4D
Fireflies communicate to each other through the language of light, and we do the same thing with morse code. Their flash patterns emit different mating calls, and so this video “beckons” other fireflies into the video.
Experimental
Focusing on the gleam and glow aspect of the word coruscate my experimental mushrooms were made to glow in the dark like a bioluminescent organism you would see deep in the woods, with a sort of extraterrestrial take on it.
Reflective
My reflective matchbox was made to record all of my bad memories that I had come across this term and release them at the end by burning them, as a symbol of something that was here for a bit but then suddenly disappeared.
Final photos of my reflective piece (before I forgot to press the record button of me burning the original booklet and it is now lost forever, but accidents happen)
PROGRESS Update: figured out how I want my fireflies to look, now I just have to arrange them to spell out the word “Flash” and figure out audio. I think I’ll also be adding built in subtitles to help the viewer understand which letter they’re spelling/what is going on in the video.
