“My Grandma was an early riser, 6:30 in the morning was most likely a sleep in for her.
In the morning as soon as her radio alarm would go off; She would quietly come into our room, open up the curtains, and on the weekends let us wake up naturally, usually we would wake around 7.00 or 7:30 with the sunlight sparkling on the wall and the smell of fresh air and toast coming down the hall way.
She had everything timed perfectly, she knew when we were stiring, starting to wake and when we walked out into the kitchen; the eggs that she had boiling on the stove top were ready and she had cut out our toast into fingers so that Grandad could cut off our egg tops so that we could dip our toast into the eggs that she had boiled perfectly for us.
It wasn’t just the smell of fresh air, lemon fresh, toast and eggs coming from the kitchen but it was the sounds of the birds chirping outside of our bedroom window, the feeling of our crisp clean tightly fitted and folded sheets and our electric blankets.
My grandma would wake up early, put the hallway and the kitchen heaters on whilst opening up the windows and the front door to let the fresh morning breeze blow through the house; just enough to circulate the air in tge house without giving us chills.
Grandma would have everything done before anyone had even opened their eye lids in the morning.
Grandma Nancy had this routine that somehow she had established as a mum with four children and her husband all living in a two bedroom home with bungaloes out the back.
Her house was small but it was a home, and everyday it was filled with love.”
