“Hi.”

August is woken up by a stir right next to them. They aren't really sure that they were asleep in the first place, but certainly they don't remember half of what they were watching earlier. Now, against the dim fairy lights at the opposite wall, they watch Gabriel as he shuts their laptop closed and sets it down next to their bed. When he turns back, he notices that they're awake.

“Hi”, August returns sleepily, “what time is it?” “Dunno.” Cosily, Gabriel nestles back into his pillow and blanket – and closely against August, who blushes at the proximity and in the very next second feels silly for this reaction. They were lying like this earlier too. They've been closer when hugging. But this feels different and there is static in the air.

They try to relax, turn a little so they're lying on their side, like they would when going to sleep. Gabriel has his eyes closed, facing the sloping wall of August's attic bedroom, and August draws an imaginary line along his profile. They've been trying to memorise his features to better draw him without reference. They don't get past the curve of his lips when Gabriel stirs again and turns towards them, mirroring their position. With his face fully out of the light now, they can barely see it in detail anymore without straining their eyes a little. They breathe silently for a moment. There is a flicker in Gabriel's eyes and August isn't sure whether it was a blink or if he dropped his gaze for just a second. They shut their eyes and try not to think about it, not to overinterpret. A moment later, they feel another shift and Gabriel's hands pressing against theirs. That's all they are separated by now.

When they open their eyes, Gabriel's face is closer than before, reducing the distance between them down to just a few centimetres. August's uncertainty translates into amusement: “Hello”, they chuckle, as if to say, what are you doing and why are you coming this close to me? Don't back off now.

Gabriel whispers a hello of his own. Then, when he asks, “Can I kiss you?” August's head shuts off. “Yes”, they just say, and two beats later feel Gabriel's fingers brush back a strand of hair and settle on their cheek. It takes both, an instant and a gazillion years for their foreheads to touch, then their noses and for Gabriel's warm breath to reach their skin. His lips are soft as ever and like last time, August is caught off-guard by the amount of saliva involved in kissing them.

They are about ready to draw back after a second, because that's how it went before, but Gabriel doubles down, pushing forwards and keeping his hand where it is. Stars burn in August's chest when they understand that this isn't the kind of one-off kiss they shared on New Year's or last month. Something inside their head dislodges and they start kissing back properly now. As Gabriel's hand slides from their face into the space between them, only just hovering at their jaw with the fingertips, August's hand, in turn, finds its way to Gabriel's cheek. As the pair keep kissing back and forth, August combs their fingers through Gabriel's curls, and when they finally do break apart, August breaks into a grin, and they can tell that Gabriel is grinning right back at them. It's only a moment before their lips come together again.

Nothing comes between them as they kiss. They roll back and forth a little as they readjust the angle of their faces, take breaks that come down to just a few seconds of foreheads pressed together before lips find each other again. When Gabriel's teeth catch on their lip and it doesn't feel like an accident, August feels amusement and thrill and encouraged to mirror the action. Still, even through all the fun, they can't help but feel a little silly in one moment or another. If they pay too much attention to the soundscape of the scene – no music, just the quiet of the night and the noise of breath, smacking of lips, rustling of blankets – and if they think a little too hard about how they might look from the outside, there is something inside August that says, This is is a very strange thing.

They try to disregard all these thoughts. They'll have all the time in the world to pick apart that feeling, and to overthink and obsess about this thing that's happening between them and Gabriel right now. For now, they want to focus on this lovely, beautiful boy who is granting them experience they never thought they'd obtain quite like this. Gabriel's sweet feathery smell is in August's nose and his soft curls are between their fingers and he seems to have infinite saliva whereas August feels all but dried out. They are in love with kissing this boy, that much they know. This could go on forever.

A big yawn forces Gabriel to draw back. He doesn't suppress it or cover his mouth, so August scrunches up their nose as their face is engulfed in a cloud of warm breath. Gabriel grins at them sleepily and imitates their expression.

“We should go to bed”, he murmurs.

“We are in bed”, August points out, only half-serious. Gabriel rolls his eyes and presses his nose against theirs. “Pfft. You know what I mean.”

“Yeah, I know.” With his face so close again, August can't help but drop their gaze to his lips, hoping for another kiss. For a moment, neither of them moves, but as if he's read their mind – or maybe just had the same thought – Gabriel tips his chin forward, and their lips meet once again. This one lasts only a few seconds, before Gabriel breaks away to plant a decidedly firm smack on August's cheek and pull them into a tight hug. They wrap their arms around him as best they can, their sideways position making it tricky to squeeze their arms through to where they need to be. But they manage, and their bodies press against each other warmly and comfortably. August nestles their head into the curve of Gabriel's neck. They feel him pressing a kiss into their hair, and an instant later, he gives them a tight squeeze, groaning a soft, happy Raah that makes them giggle. They stay in this embrace for what feels like half the night.
