How to get into a good business school?
Business school or B-school, depending upon on how ‘in vogue’ you are and the school you aspire to get into, is about those doors of opportunities which open only with three letters, MBA. Notwithstanding the usual jazz about how big your pay check can get or the degree of respect these three letters shower when attached at the bottom right hand corner of your name plate, MBA is valued at a dime underrated its real worth. The real worth however reflects the ever-elusive unknown magic mantra of getting into a good B-school.
It isn’t a number game!
A good B-School’s spread of its students’ topography graduating out range from boring bankers to ever-so pleasing managers, from vulnerable auto industry experts to the famed Silicon Valley start up fragilities. Such a range always needn’t be taken with a pinch of salt as in thinking maybe ‘I am not suitable’. On the contrary a good B-school propels its admission processes to bring together a class that has sufficient talent to run an organization, help a social cause, and partake in a community event all at once in a normal day. To put it slightly these are the parameters which are ticked off of about every MBA aspirant’s checklist.
Surprisingly the triumvirate of Harvard, Stanford and Wharton receive only such applications year on year. If stellar performances like these don’t get awarded an admission where do mere mortals like you and I stand? Chances are, even if the admission convenor likes you looking at your scads of corporate achievements and community awards he may still turn you down because, the concurrent program suitable to your profile does not open till next year! Upon each and every B-school’s application the attached literature tells you about the university, its curriculum, a prospectus and about their faculty. They can’t stretch beyond what they have for you. In other words, if you are doing an MBA to improve your career in economics and gaming theory, there is no use giving a test for a B-school without an economics department.
Instead, know thyself
Pete Johnson, admissions director at Haas, University of Berkley, California says regardless of the volume of applications the most important factor is always the quality of the application. What he means is applications need to stand out like a square peg in a round hole. The four corners of a perfect square peg constitute strong academic preparation, good work experience, letters of recommendation and a clear understanding of what to gain from an MBA experience. If you know yourself pretty well (and you should) 40 lines and 400 words is all it takes to stand out for the school you are applying to take notice of your application. Then to the cover the other three borders of our square provide each and every academic certificate you have. A word of caution on the work experience and letters of recommendation though, is to make sure your references and previous employers are aware of their contact information being given out prior to including them in the application. This helps in your ex boss being well prepared about a university calling them and asking about you rather than being a surprise Christmas gift, getting caught unaware. So, know thyself well.
Quality, Quality and Quality
A good B-school is more interested in their repute than they are in admitting a student who has sub-par professionalism. At the end, within five years of graduating your B-school should be heard the world over, because you graduated from it. All the best, my friend!
