I began studying Japanese while a student at @princeton after taking a course called Zen and Performance, where we looked at the application of Zen in traditional Japanese performing arts. The texts mirrored many of my own personal understandings of what it was to be an artist and, most especially, an improviser. I've been finding so much joy with the #AltoFlute recently. It's a bigger flute with a husky low end and a bit uncommon. I've had the good fortune to record on it many times with my good buddy @theocroker on his past 4 releases (check my story highlights for samples). Playing another instrument is such a great challenge. It's much like trying to communicate in a second language and reminds me of when I lived in Japan and began learning the Japanese. It's never quite like your mother tongue but it's so great to be able to reach folks in a different way. That being said, leave a note if you speak more than one language. What do you speak? .. ..
