Calculus 1
Ciao, I finally got enrolled in Calc 1 during this spring semester. Unfortunately for me, I went through a lot of psychological trauma while adjusting to a new temp job as a secretary for a large corporation. At the same time, I was experiencing what I would call it a coming of age-psychologically-at the per diem job I have been working at for almost 6 years. I hated that job from day one, but learned to accept it because it is what it is.
Throughout this year, my mind has been growing at a tremendous rapid pace and so has been my emotions and intellect. I ended up getting an F for the course, and even though I suspected, I would not be able to get a C if I enrolled in a 6 week course summer course, I enrolled in it anyway for several reasons. I knew if I did not get any training for three months, the situation could have been the same as during the spring because I would forget a lot of the Math like it always happens to all of us including tutors and professors. I know this from my own personal experience and also because when I am enrolled in a Math course, I get tutored every week by the campus Math Center, and the tutors tell me they forget a lot of the Math they have not been teaching for a while. So this was the purpose of putting myself through the torture of a summer Calculus 1 course.
It was very difficult emotionally to deal with the high fast pace of the course-4 months in six weeks. The biggest mental challenge for me was not having enough downtime for myself and separation from others. The course was 12 hours a week, and after working several hours and being around other adults, I would rush home by bus and tried to go to the bathroom, get some water, and log on into the course. At the beginning, I was late several times because the bus was running late. Then I started to log on to blackboard and into the course through my cell phone while on the bus so that I would not be late. Being on the bus listening to the class kept me from taking notes because there are no tables on the bus. Besides the drivers are crazy fast drivers, so the bus is constantly bouncing which it would be impossible to take notes clearly while on the bus.

How Do I Display My React Application on the LocalHost after making revisions?
Good evening,
I have been learning Front End Web Development with React through Coursera.org. While I have part of one foot inside the door with the knowledge of web design I acquired previously through Coursera.org, React is all new to me.
Somehow through a lot of trial and error and watching over and over again the videos of the lectures on how to install the react app, I managed to display the react app at the beginning. But the webpage was blank it did not have any design or text in it. Once I started to add the code that the professor was providing us in the videos, everytime I saved the changes and checked the localhost, it kept displaying an error page. When I completed the first assignment, of course the my React app was not displaying, but I passed the assignment.
Now I am on my second assignment and I need to see if what my professor wants me to display on the React app through the instructions given displays. I need to see whether the code that I research and the revisions that will make as a result of the research is correct. Right now I feel I am blinded because i cannot see if whatever code I try works.
What I am planning to do for this Assignment 2 is go over the lectures prior to Assignment 1 so that I can try to reinstall the app and also pin point what is wrong with the code I submitted in Assignment 1. But also I can only assume that I must have made a lot of mistakes copying the code the professor gave me in the videos from the first week of lessons.
Right now, I do not have a working React App.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Consequences of being Covid19 positive
As the weeks go by pass surviving being covid19 positive, I feel I am still struggling perhaps because of this hot and humid climate which does not work well with my asthma. Or maybe it has a lot to do with the air quality when I leave the apartment. Today I waited outside for about 30 minutes for the bus to pick me up, and I did not struggle with my breathing: It was comfortable. But after being tested at the nursing home where I work for covid19 which we are required to do weekly, I waited outside for a long time for the bus. At some point it became unbearable. During that waiting period, I thought that difficulty breathing came from the workout I had done in the morning because I had no time to recover from it and relax: I had to basically take two bites of food and rush to get ready so that I could be outside when the bus arrived.
Once I returned home and got comfortable, I realized that I should have waited inside the facility because it was easier for me to breathe which is often not the case for lack adequate AC: This is the reason why I waited outside, and it was also very noisy in there.
I still struggle to breathe and am winded when I walk down the hallways inside the facility. I do not know if it will get better with time: Only time will tell.

Recovering from Coronavirus
Ciao,
On May 26, 2020, I tested positive for the covid19 virus, and did not test negative until July 17th, 2020.  For about two months prior to being positive, I had symptoms but kept testing negative and was quarantined on two occasions- each time for one week.  Prior to testing positive, I had the runs for about 4 or 5 weeks and I thought that because I suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, my stomach was upset.
Once I tested positive, the runs continued for several weeks, and because I got a call several times a day from the Department of Health, I found out that the runs are part of the covid19 symptoms.  I continued to have flu like symptoms throughout the weeks that I was positive, and once I tested negative, I was told by my boss to going to the nursing home where I work to be rested

Trying to Help Myself
Today I thought it would be smart to save some images from coursera.org into my laptop and then upload them into
my new e-portfolio. The whole idea was to attach a link
to each of the images so that my viewers could have access to my online certificates. Well for some reason
unknown to me, I decided to embed all the images and the
links that I planned to attached to the former. The images
would not embed and neither would the links:
Believe me I tried several times. So I gave up and gave
in to the basics. When I finish downloading pictures
into my laptop, I will upload them into my e-portfolio
and then permanently delete them from my laptop.

Ciao, I am working on an assigment: I need to use html5, css3 and Javascrript.   I have the code for the modal, but when I add it to the html file, it won't work: It only works separately from the index.html file we've been working on from the the very beginning. I suspect it may have to do with the differences in <meta>, so I did some research but did not get far.  Any suggestions are appreciated!

Getting started on another e-portfolio
So how do I get started?  Honestly, when I first realized I had to create yet another e-portfolio, there was a mixture of complex feelings.  Creating an e-portfolio is the same as any website: you do not know what you are getting into until you are actually doing it!  One of the many feelings I have been reliving, partly because I have been ill and recovering from a sinus infection, is the frustration I experienced time and time again when I made a mistake typing the code for something.  Just one character can mess up the whole process of web design.  Whether it was an involuntary reflex, touched a character without realizing it or copy pasted the code but missed one character or added one where it did not belong, if the computer does not recognized the whole code, it won’t display what you intended for the web page.  This can be mind boggling and exhausting!  The only thing that can help is if you have been through this many times before and are not moving forward on a given day, you use a little wisdom and remember the process of solving the problem.  This means you stop, give your mind, hands and eyes a break and move on to something else.  Chances are after a good night sleep, you can see clearly where you made mistakes and find solutions.

Wireframes: A Good Place to Start
7/30/2019

So in my last post, I was trying to figure out where to start updating this site!!!  And I decided to start with wireframes by putting on paper what I think should be revised.  Today I started to jot things down as I went through some of the webpages.  It occurred to me that I have some images that are too big and in other webpages, there are just too many images.  The site needs to be consistent and have a pattern so that the viewer does not get dizzy.  When I created this website almost two years ago, it meant a lot to me-for some reason-that I had a lot of colorful images.  Now I understand the purpose of images, but there has to be some form of organization.

Where Do I Start?

Where do I start?  During the past few weeks I have been
wondering how can I take on such a load as revising this second
e-portfolio that I created because it has a lot of webpages.  This
evening it occurred to me that I should put it all on paper through
wireframes like our good professor taught us.  The thing about
wireframes is that the suggestions are to make them black and
white only so that we do not get attached to them: During the
process of creating and recreating wireframes we will throw a lot
of them out, but they can help me organize my thoughts and by
mapping out some ideas, perhaps I can see if it is what I envision
for the revised website.  So that is what I am going to do next
before trying to make a lot of changes without a clear
organizational plan to follow.

Challenges with the images again!!!
7/17/2019

I spent a good portion of the day trying to find a way to upload a selfie into this
website and my latest one.  In the homepage there was a selfie embedded here
in the html, but it was not displaying: It has been like that for months now.
Anyway, I finally got around to fixing it.  It turns out that the images that I tried to
use were in either google photos or facebook.  The reason why I tried using the
images from these two sites is because I learned through hard labor and trial and
error and at the coaching of one of my favorite technology professors that in
order to embed and resize an image, we need to use an image that is on a
website so that we have a URL to embed!  Well today I forgot about what I had
been through in the past and about my good professor's advice two years ago.  I
found a couple of images on my cell phone that I liked, and I also thought it
would be very simple to upload them once I connected the charger to the
computer.  The couple of times that I attempted this, the charger was not
working, and I did not know it.  So today I used a different charger.  But the
images I wanted still did not upload: As a matter of fact only a few of the images
uploaded into the computer.  This is why I tried using images from Google
photos, and I thought it would work out well with the embed code because
Google photos gives me a URL for each image, but no not a chance!  I did not
succeed!  Neither did I succeed with the images of my self from facebook.  I
suspect it has to do with the ending of the URL: None of the images I tried using
ended in jpeg, png or jpg.  So perhaps that is the reason why after embedding the
URL in the embed code, the images did not display.
So how do you find an image of yourself that has an URL suited for embedding in
another website and the image actually displays in the other website? Well, you
go to another website where your selfie is being displayed and right click on the
image so that you can copy the link for the image.  So that you can paste the URL
into the embed code that will display the image.

Embedding Code to Display Images
1/28/2019

During the past four weeks, because I had a break from my face-to-face college courses, I was able to put some time in revising this website.  Recently, I started to embed the code along with the URL for the image because it gives the webpage a more organized look, and it is more presentable.  When you use weebly to create a website, you use a template, but to embed the code, first click on the embed box, drag in down and place it where the image is wanted.   The code that I used is <img src="attached URL" width=size height=size />   So basically you will attached a URL that you copy pasted from an image on a website.  Then you choose a size for the width and a size for the height then close the code.  I found that embedding the above code helps me keep all images on the webpage the same size.

Finding Time to Revise this Site
1/3/2019

Ciao,
Well, the only reason why I finally found some time to revise this website and write some reflections is because right now I have winter recess from my face-to-face courses in college, and I am actually at work but have some downtime during my lunch break.  It so happens that I have access to a computer, a desk and With the limited amount of time I had today to make revisions, I managed to figure out a way to place the images next to the text like my professor suggested during the final presentation of this website a little over a year ago.  The trick to it is to first find the image online, copy image link, then drag the image icon on the web creator you use and place the icon where you want the image.  Then you will click on image URL and paste the link you copied.  Then you save it on your site creator by publishing it.  Then you have to resize the image so that it is aligned with the other images on the same page.  Once your image is the way you wanted and where you wanted, you then drag the text icon and drop it next to the image.  Type what you want next to the image and move on to the next chore.  Of course this works for weebly.com where you get a lot of aids: Coding from scratch is a whole different ball game.
During this rather very limited amount of downtime to get as much revising as possible, I considered doing without my previous educational background that was only centered around becoming a teacher because it really has nothing to do with what I am interested in doing for the rest of my life which is technology.  But during this very resourceful day, I considered to include my earlier higher educational training under another field of study where I can showcase past and let recruiters see what I have accomplished.  On the same website I can focus on accomplishments for the future.

Challenges to maintaining a site
8/19/2018

Ciao, It's been a long time since I submitted https//:mildredprofessionawebsite.weebly.com as a final presentation.  The biggest challenge has been being able to maintain the site and make gradual but consistent changes as I move forward learning web design.  While I am tending to my college courses and web design training, updating an already published site has always become part of the back seat of a car.
Honestly, this past spring semester, I dared to start a website from scratch using the techniques that I learned through my website design training.  There were challenges bigger than I expected.  The website only has a few pages, but I created it for the purpose of a final presentation which was informational for my professor and classmates.  The research was about the use of technology or lack of it in Italy's public schools.
When I finished my little site, no one could see it just me because it was only visible on my computer.  I did some research online and discovered I needed a host for my website which could be very pricey.  I had to do more research and shop for an affordable host.  After paying a small fee, I thought I was done and ready for my site to be visible to others.  It turns out that each page on a website has to be uploaded into the site in order for others to view it.  After the tech walked me through it over the phone several times, some of the pages would not upload.
When I thought the problem was solved, I typed the URL on my phone's tool bar and it kept giving me an error page.  So I ended up calling the people that hosts my site quite a few times that night and then I waited two days to call them back because I was working a double the next day.  I had to request an extension for the final project.  Well on top of everything else, it turned out I needed a landing page which meant the page had to be saved under index.com.
Now this is one of those aha moments in which suddenly what my professor explained at the end of the HTML course I took online learning web design, and why she insisted that we create a webpage called index.com.  So I already had the webpage; I just never used it!

It has been thirteen days since our final website presentation.  It was done through videoconferencing in a Zoom platform.  I am still taking to heart the revisions that I need to do because of the feedback that I got from my classmates.
Honestly I am enjoying making revisions because it feels the way it should be if I were doing this for a living.  I would need to keep up with the times, changes and suggestions of readers and viewers.
It is my job as a web developer to facilitate for the surfer his/her experience of the site I create.  One major criticism of my site was that it was taking too long to navigate through the internal pages and external pages.  The reason for this according to my critic (classmate) was because there were too many pictures on the site and some of them were too big.
So as time allows, I am continuing the revisions and making adjustments to the size of the pictures.  As I continue to pursue my training in web design, I have to be vigilant and open to criticism in order to provide the service that prospective clients and their clients will be pleased with.

Learning From Others Reluctantly
11/5/2017

Most of us refuse to accept advice from others: This starts when we are very little because we get fed up with everyone sticking their mouths into our business, and we want to think for ourselves without the rest of the world constantly getting into our heads.
Because this is the second time around that I am a graduate student, I have learned over the past few years to at least listen to the suggestions of others even if I cannot stand it.
So we had our final class for the course EST 567 in which we presented our websites to the rest of the class and our professor.  About two or three weeks ago we had a Zoom conference, and some of us showed how far along we were with our websites.  I got a lot of feedback from my professor and some from classmates.  I took the suggestions and made a lot of changes over the past two and half weeks.
On our video conference this week, I got a lot of good feedback because they noticed how much time and work I put into to site since they last saw it.  One of my peers gave me negative feedback, and even though another peer and my professor spoke against the negative feedback, the little yellow light in my head decided to listen to the suggestions of this peer who did not equally shower me with grace for my extensive work.  He said I have too many pictures on my site and some of them are too big: This is why it takes the browser longer to upload the pages and external links.
Now honestly, I did not approve of his feedback, and I was not happy about it.  I decided to make the necessary changes just to please the viewer.  At the time, I really wanted to scream and give him a piece of my mind.  But the further I get away from the presentation day, the more I realize that there is a lot of truth to what he said.  I do not want this website to just be like many others that are very informational with hardly any visuals which would make it very boring.  This website is about what I can bring to the table to a prospective employer.  At the same time Mildred Professional Website introduces me as an individual and a unique person.
That being said, this does not mean that I cannot take criticism and use it to my advantage.

Thinking things through and following the advice of professors
10/27/2017

I learned the hard way to follow the instructions of the professors while I lived in Italy.  I few weeks before we left for Italy, all students had to meet with some of the professors in a conference room so that the latter could warn us of obstacles and experiences while abroad.  We even received an e-mail from a very nice student who had studied abroad.  They all warned us not to bring heavy luggage with us on bus tours.
Well some of us did not listen.  We were told to leave our laptops in storage until we got back from the 5-day trip, but we did not listen.  We were told not to bring a heavy laptop with us, and again some of us did not listen.
So when we got to Venice after a very long day that started really early in the morning, we had to cross a small bridge that had steps.  Those of us who had a heavy small luggage that was very heavy struggled a lot to get across especially the ladies.  I was one of them.  It took me so long to get across the bridge that I lost the group of students and professors I was with.
Lucky for me, I did listen to some of the instructions of my professors because I brought the address of the hotels where we were going to be staying.  I asked a little boy for directions where hotel was in Italian, and he told me.  I was out of breath and sweating, and it was already getting dark.  An American lady heard us talking, and she asked me if I was looking for a group of students and she told me where they went.
Of course, eventually I found them.  Could you believe no one noticed that I was not at the hotel the whole time I was lost-not even the professors.
Well Italy continues to teach me the value and respect I must have for my professors.  To this very day my respect and appreciation for the professors continue to grow: When they tell me to do something or make changes to my school work, I listen and do what they say.

I came across other challenges: This time I was busy shuffling around images on a different page.  Somehow in the midst of all that chaos of trying make the website good enough so that I could earn a good mark, I realized that moving the images is the hardest thing to do.  It is much easier to move the text and put it next to the image you want.
Once again the experience of trial and error, I have learned a lot.

Intro to C++
anI finally tried again some programming, but this time I forced myself to think and analyze the situation so that I would not make the same mistakes as before.  So far it looks like I made a sound choice by enrolling in this C++ specialization through coursera.org online.  Now I learned all of my web designed independently with the help of coursera.org.  So it works to sign up for courses through them.  The biggest challenge to learning programming is being able to stick to it and follow through all the way to the end, and continuing your training.  The second biggest challenge is passing the test and quizzes they through at you.  Well it took me 9 days, but I finally passed the practice quiz and the graded quiz for week 1, so now I am on week 2.

Still trying to my HW assignment
Ciao, It’s been more than two weeks since I started this assignment, and I have come across a lot of obstacles: One of the biggest problems with using bootstrap is that it has it own separate code.  It is not just html or css.  So most of the time when I try to style the webpage after already having an html file which has the code the professor gave us, no changes happen.  A lot of times when I find a code through google, it seems oh OK. This will be simple or at least that is what I assume when I work on this project: Bootstrap is never simple!  I learned to give the div class a name so that I can refer to that name in the css file when I am trying to style.  The problem with the divs and a name is that bootstrap is all about divs: Once you assign a name to a div and is repeated throughout the html file, when you style the divs with the same name, all of them are changed.  So it is a back and forth situation.

Acquiring skills through the growth in technology learning
After a 18 months of learning web design, I finally started I started to learn to find the answers to problems such as code through google.  When I started web design 2 years ago, after each lesson there was an assignment to complete.  Because I was so new and inexperienced, even though our awesome professor would always tell us in the assignment videos to never code alone and if we did not have someone to code with, to google the answers to the right code, I still did not get it.  Honestly, I could not remember anything I was being taught after each video: I had to repeatedly watch the same videos and look at my notes.  I would also submit questions on the class forum and wait for answers.  After a year, it got a little easier because I started to retain some of the information through practice and began to follow the advice the professor would give at the beginning of each assignment.  Instead of trying to figure everything out myself, I began to google everything I did not know in order to come up with the displayed what the professor wanted in the assignment.
Now two years later after completing the Web Design Specialization, I am working on my first assignment of another Specialization-Full Stack Web Development also through coursera.   The first thing I did with this assignment was repeat the same mistakes as a beginner learner of web design.  I was trying to code the div by myself.  It did not take long before I realized that I needed to google the code.
Some of the obstacles I came across was the editor I was using-notepad.  During my free time which is very limited, I spent a great deal of energy trying to change to header and footer background color.  After a lot of saving, changing css and div in html saving file and refreshing the web-page, I had no answers but to keep googling and trying different codes.  Yesterday, I decided to use my code-pen account again, and when I copy pasted the html and css code into the pen, voila!  The bg color for the footer and the header was displaying.
So I realized again to always have backup and test your code somewhere other than just your editor !!!

Being the Manager of your own life is the same as being your websites’ Manager
Ciao, So what can I tell you about maintaining a website?  Not much!!  Obviously, I had no idea the amount of time and effort that it takes to keep up with the changes that I must make to a website over time.  For example, my second e-portfolio is almost two years old, and I I have had very limited free time to apply changes and updates to it.  One of the things I was looking at recently was how I could make this professional website more interactive and engaging to the viewer even though it is supposed to be just another e-portfolio that I created.  Well, today I did something I have never done with this website before.  I finally looked at it from the side that the user gets to see, and I realized that a lot has changed since the presentation of this e-portfolio during the final day of class through videoconferencing.
Since I have been studying web design for the past two years, aside from studying educational technology, I can say that this being my second e-portfolio almost two years ago, needs to be updated and improved just like a resume does from time to time.  My career interests shifted during the process of learning web design and a little programming not to mention all of the Ed Tech.  So when I started these programs two years ago, I still had the mindset for working in the field of education even if it were in the tech department.  Unfortunately, my past college background is manifesting in this two-year-old  e-portfolio, so I need to make a lot of revisions in order for the viewer to understand my current career goals which are not in education but instead in technology.

Trying to keep it together with progress
Ciao,
Well, it’s been a long time since my last post on this blog.  I do not even remember the assignment I posted about last time.  I actually completed the specialization that I started two years ago.  Web Design for Everyone included 5 courses on web design and a little Java Script.  This specialization like many others is offered through coursera.org, and it awarded me a certificate online for each course completion.  In the end, I received 6 certificates all together because you also get a certificate for completing the specialization.
At the advice of my awesome professor of web design, I enrolled in another specialization.  This one, among many things, includes Full Stack Web Development.  I have also tried to keep up with some programming specialization, but without any success.  So I did make some mistakes when signing up for programming.  In the future, I would need to make sure I sign up for a very beginner’s programming course.

Responsive Design Assignment 2
Ciao, with this code I am trying to test what my good professor taught me about changing the layout of your view when the screen gets bigger or smaller.  She wants us to code the layout of the larger screen with the navigation links on top and the text underneath them.  For the smaller screen we need to layout the navigation bars on the far left in a horizontal order and the text to the right of the navigation bars.  For some reason, none of the CSS was applied to my html file.  Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?  ty

Web Design
I started learning web design during the summer of 2017: During the spring of 2017, I went back to graduate school and was enrolled in the Educational Technology Program @ Stony Brook University.  Right away I realized that the program I got enrolled in was not going to help accomplish the skills in technology I wanted to accomplish.  To my luck, Financial Aid offered me Work-Study for July and August of 2017.  I met some interesting people that summer including some Phd students who told me about coursera.org and the Financial Assistance offered for students who needed it.  Coursera offers various courses for which your receive a certificate.  They also offered Master’s programs.  I chose web design and there were 5 courses offered in a sequence.  From the very beginning, I had various responsibilities, work, college courses , my health and responsibilities to my Studio apartment.  The good thing about coursera is that there is no time limitations on when I must finish.  Sometimes it would take several weeks before I could continue with a course, and that is just the way it is.  Anyway I have been taught several skills; HTML, CSS3, introduction to JavaScript, Responsive Design which includes wireframes, Bootstrap, and Media Queries.

Aside from content, what did I learn from CSE 118?
Learning a programming language is like anything else you want to master in life: You have to give it almost your all in order to succeed and get the most out of the course.  I realized that if I had worked just as hard as I did with my Algebra II course this past fall semester, the outcome of my knowledge and capabilities in Java programming would have been much more satisfying and successful.  Realistically speaking I cannot fly around with a cape being Batgirl, Wonder Woman, Superwoman and Mighty Mouse for every course I am enrolled in during the same semester and still work more than 40 hours a week, still tend to my other responsibilities and go to the gym and get high marks on every course on top of all that.  One thing that I need is to code with some help.  So as mu Uber driver suggested, once I am enrolled in a programming course again, I should post questions her about assignments and projects and readings or lectures so that readers who are into programming can post their suggestions and questions as well.
