On Writing

I want to write more. I’ve posted nothing but photos for the past year. I don’t have the ol’ reliable broken heart and lonely soul to dig inspiration from anymore. Ever since I’ve found someone to have and to hold, I’ve been happy and fulfilled. I’ve always thought that happiness translated to decreased emotional depth. Now that I think about it, it’s probably one of the reasons I didn’t let myself be happy.

I thought I couldn’t find content because I was satisfied with my life, then I realized I was full of crap. I couldn’t write meaningful poems and essays anymore because I stopped reading. It didn’t matter before whether I was joyful or lonely. Emotional trauma and distress did help but they were never sufficient.

I wrote Skyscrapers while reading Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead. I completed I was Asked to Write a Poem after digging through YouTube for spoken word. I penned The Tenth Man after reading World War Z.

While I could also write essays and poems without any literary inspiration, writing while or after reading makes it easier. Novels help me see connections I didn’t know existed. Poems reveal metaphors between my life and written masterpieces. So I’m reading more this year, because I am writing more this year. I know I have something to write about. I just need to sharpen my tools.
