okay but. okay. i love. when whumpees get taken. and hurt. and the experience irreversibly changes them. so when they come home and caretaker thinks "oh i'm finally getting them back!" they're actually getting a person so vastly different that it can barely be considered whumpee.
and. and i love when that drives an irreparable wedge between them.
everything seems the same from when they were kidnapped. but whumpee isn't the same anymore
everything seems different. it's not the home from whumpee's memories
caretaker is the exact same, seemingly unchanged by the months/years whumpee spent in captivity
caretaker is different. they've moved on
whumpee is trying to be the same, they're trying to go back to that carefree time from before their capture. they can't
whumpee is trying to make up for lost time but nobody seems to have the energy for that. caretaker seems to just want to move on immediately
whumpee is so angry that people want them to be the same. or that people want them to only have a Little trauma from whatever happened, then be fine once theyve received some broth and a week in the hospital
maybe the Incident didn't last months or years. maybe it was just a week. so everyone is Extra hoping that whumpee will just be fine. they don't understand that that week felt like 5 years and messed whumpee up beyond comprehension
in the end, they can't do it. whumpee resents caretaker, caretaker can't even look at whumpee, or maybe only one of them clings and that clinginess just creates more hurt. they were reunited but for what? they both wish they could've just kept their memories as they were. caretaker wishes whumpee had stayed gone instead of coming back wrong. whumpee wishes they'd stayed gone, with this perfect image of caretaker in their head to give them hope.
what do they have left? there's no big thing to look forward to. not anymore. because they got the big thing they wanted and it wasn't anything they'd been hoping for.

Whumpee's only semi-conscious when they're rescued. Caretaker tries desperately to hug them, but whumpee doesn't have energy to lift their arms; so caretaker half-drapes them across their chest in their lap to get to hold them.

Characters Holding Each Other In Whump
This is my demand to see more characters holding each other in whump, but also my opportunity to go on about characters holding each other in whump.
I need more of it, it's so warm, and great when it's characters dependent and safe to one another. Or it's creepy and harrowing when it's between whumper and anything.
I need more of
Caretaker finally reaching whumpee, and pulling them to their chest. Now that they are within each other's arms Caretaker is not letting go.
Multiple whumpees who cannot see each other directly, but hear their voices and reach their hands just far enough to feel each other's touch. Maybe they're reaching out between cell bars, perhaps there's a hole in the walls of an enclosure, or an open slot to a lab. Either way, they've found a hand to hold.
A distraught whumpee crawling over to their only friend, and waiting to be pulled into someone's lap.
When a known threat (whumper) approaches and a protective character pulls another into their grasp to shield them.
Two shivering characters latched onto each other, removing as much space between themselves as possible. After all, what if someone separates them again?
Whumper holding whumpee from behind, swaying them back and forth, listening to the subtle sounds of fright.
Two words: Bridal Carry. Whumpee nuzzling their face into caretaker's chest for bonus points. For extra bonus points, latching onto to caretaker's clothing despite being carried.
Whumpee trying to escape from a whumper they've pummeled thoroughly, only for the half-conscious whumper to grab whumpee one last time. Is it a pleading? A don't go? Or just a final act of terror?
Caretaker sitting on the bed next to a whumpee, and bringing them into their grasp as they whimper.

stoic whumpee that was conditioned to always be calm and collected, regardless of circumstances +
caretaker that is extremely anxious, feeling guilty whenever whumpee attempts to calm them down
x
"It's alright, Caretaker. It's not that bad, really."
"N-No, you're hurt," they say, patching up Whumpee's hand. "Stop saying it's fine. I should be the one calming you!"
Whumpee smiles reassuringly. "You don't need to stress out this badly. I've went through much worse."
Caretaker is this close to breaking down crying, while Whumpee is just staring at them awkwardly.

Severe hypothermia is great but as someone who has experienced mild hypothermia, I think it needs more credit.
You don't need medical attention but everything just feels wrong for the hours and days afterward. You can't regulate your body temperature right. You're cold and shivering but the blankets and sleeping bags you're swaddled in have you sweating because youre body hasn't decided you're safe enough to send blood back to your extremities. You want to warm your hands and feet but know that's going to send the cold blood right back deep, deep into your core like daggers.
Dress warmly when you're out on lobster fishing boats y'all...

When whumpee was rescued, they were mentally and physically spent. They had no energy to cry and sob, no voice to speak to the police, or to tell the doctors what hurt.
They slept for nearly 24 hours, only waking because caretaker shook them to make sure they were still alive.

It's a slow process. The body fights it every step of the way. It's the shivering that gets you.
Cruel air steals the heat from you as you curl tight into yourself. Your limbs hurt just as much as they are numb of it.
Your muscles ache and your teeth clatter and all you do is feel colder, and colder, and colder.
So cold, and so small in comparison to the fridged nothing around you.
You would do anything to be warm again.
Anything.
Please.

I cant get the picture of defiant whumpee being beaten by a group of people (maybe 2 or 3) who Whumper ordered them to.
Cue the splatters of blood. The sound of a fist connecting to skin with a hard thud soon followed by a weak and rasped cry.
Bonus points for at the end Whumpee’s eyes meeting with Whumper’s whos sat back on their chair, a cigarette lazily sitting between Whumper’s two fingers.
Whumper soaks in how utterly pathetic Whumpee looks, a beaten mess on the floor, looking up at them.
A beautiful sight if you ask me.

Whumpee and Caretaker get into a heated argument, and Whumpee marches out of the house, slamming the door behind them. Caretaker rants about Whumpee to the other team members the whole rest of the evening, making mean remarks when the others are trying to call Whumpee or express worry about them being gone for so long.
The next morning Whumpee still hasn't come back, but Caretaker just shakes their head about them acting so dramatic.
Until Caretaker, or somebody else, opens the news app on their phone to scroll through the latest events while drinking their morning coffee, and reads how the police has found a body not very far from they live, whatever vague descriptions are given in the article matching Whumpee perfectly.
Caretaker's anger turns into panic in a second.
(also works with whumpee and caretaker's roles reversed)

super cool when a whumpee’s head is lifted up by a handful of their hair. preferably harshly and uncomfortably, if not outright painfully
