i hope shinee knows we won’t forget jonghyun. he wasn’t just a gorgeous face or a singer or just an idol to us. he was so much more. is so much more. we love him too. most of us didn’t know him like shinee did, and i’m not saying we did. but we love him too. our love is just… different. but it certainly wasn’t superficial love for his looks and his voice. it’s so much more. don’t worry, minho. don’t worry, kibum. don’t worry, jinki. don’t worry, taemin. and jonghyun? don’t you worry, either.
we love you as much as your brothers and will never, ever forget you.

I’ve been thinking a lot about why this has affected so many of us so deeply. I’m sure a lot of us have heard the phrase, “but he was just a celebrity” or “you didn’t even know him”. And I keep thinking about that. I keep thinking, it isn’t fair, I shouldn’t feel like my entire life has been flipped upside down because of the passing of a person I’ve never met personally. So why does it feel like that?
I think that for most people (and this is coming from an American’s point of view, so seeing mostly American celebrities), celebrities are like these untouchable beings. We know that they’re people, that technically they’re just like us, but it’s like they exist on another plane. Like they’re living on a completely different level, and all we can do is watch them. And for those that do find a deeper connection to these celebrities, the connection can only go so far because of this disconnect.
But SHINee was never really like that. They’ve always been very open and personal with their fans. They’re not afraid to get close physically. Think about Taemin handing out lollipops during their debut era, or Jonghyun sitting outside 5 feet away from fans and talking with them. Yes, there have been incidents where getting too close to the fans caused issues, but for the most part, there was always this trust between the boys and shawols. Like when Jonghyun went down to the audience and told shawols that he knew they wouldn’t hurt him and let them touch his hair.
But that’s just the physical aspect of it. They’ve also been very open in a personal way. Of course, as fans we may never truly know if they were always being themselves, but it really seemed like they were not hiding anything most of the time. If they wanted to cry, they cried. if they wanted to laugh, they laughed. They were always very open about who they are. They were even open about fights they’ve had with each other, when most groups try to keep up the “no we never fight we love each other too much” image.
And with Jonghyun especially, he bared his soul to us. In his writings, in his songs, in his radio show, he never hid how he felt. He connected on such a deep and personal level with so many people because he shared how he felt, and for a lot of us, we felt the same way. Even though we couldn’t respond to him, when he talked on Blue Night about how he was feeling, it would feel like we were having an actual conversation with him. It felt like talking to a friend that understood your struggles.
And I think that’s why it hurts so much. Of course, it’s going to feel differently for fans than for his closest friends and family. But it still hurts so much for fans because it doesn’t feel like we lost someone we never knew, it feels like we lost a friend. We lost someone so important to us, that we connected with on a personal level, past what we just see in performances or music videos. And other people can’t understand that, because they’ve only ever seen celebrities as things meant to entertain, and not as actual people that you can have a deep connection to.

I hope when people talk about Jonghyun, it’s not just about his passing...
I hope they mention his struggles he had to overcome as a child being raised by a single parent, and had to essentially live on welfare for part of his life.
I hope they mention that despite the opposition, he dropped out of school and got a GED in order to invest himself fully in his music.
I hope they mention the years he devoted as a trainee before debuting and consistently ranked as one of the top vocalists from the time he was signed.
I hope they mention his on-stage charisma with Shinee and as a soloist that captivated audiences for almost 10 years.
I hope that they mention what he was able to crossover from being an idol to being an artist, and a singer-songwriter at that.
I hope they talk about how his feat was unprecedented and all of his music has been subject to critical acclaim and praise across the board not just in Korea, but also recognized by Western critics and publications.
I hope they mention that he wrote and composed not only for SM and himself, but for other artists outside of the company, creating collaborative ties that helped to facilitate SM’s investment in such collaborations musically with the start of The Station.
I hope they mention his years as a radio DJ on Blue Night becoming an outlet for him and his skills, and for helping to appeal general audiences to take notice of his work despite the bias against idols.
I hope they mention his skills as a poet and writer for contemporary literature with his novel Skeleton Flower: things that have been released and set free, which also received commercial and critical success.
I hope they mention how he released 4 solo albums (with 1 to be released posthumously) in the past three years while still promoting with Shinee as a group in between.
I hope they mention his four series of sold-out solo concerts in those three years, each of them artistically diverse and marvels.
I hope they mention that he broke away from his “assigned” image in order to be true to himself and to his fans.
I hope they mention that he put his career on the line to advocate for education, LGBTQ+ rights, mental health awareness, and anti-discrimination for minorities.
I hope they mention that he never hid his emotions, and his lyrics came from the depths of his soul and touched countless others.
I hope they mention his undying love for his family and his members.
I just hope they mention how much of a legacy he left behind, and how important and beautiful that legacy is.
