Supergirl 6x06 Prom Again!
Chyler Leigh’s directorial debut rocked. The remaining the original cast have all directed the show now. Admittedly, Benoist and Leigh were given filler episodes (5x17 we already knew because we’d seen Lex in realtime post COIE) but loving the focus pulls, framing of action and emotional dialogue. Being given ultimate cheesy villains and it not being switch off cringe is no mean feat. Loving the actresses playing younger versions of loved characters. I wish the script matched their performance and understanding of mannerisms. Eliza Helm as young Cat Grant is amazing, and you do feel the young Danvers sisters really will grow into their older counterparts. Nia’s Dream powers now include making dreams a reality.
That’s pretty much it on the good front, as there’s only so much you can praise filler that’s a distented two-parter. It undoes anything good in season 1, such as Cat Grant building her media empire much earlier (rather than six years) and having two children. There’s also Kara experiencing green kryptonite for the first time, and the encounter being shrugged off as mildly annoying rather than nails in your blood. I don’t think Alex’s minimal screentime passes the Bechedel test as they all mention Kenny in relation to Kara romantically.
Kenny doesn’t die (a small blessing in a show that disregards MOC unless they are dragging Kara down), so Earth Prime Kara needed a different motivation for keeping her identity secret. She does so through time travel, akin to E-38 Kara having the 100th episode as an exploration of changing reality as trial runs, and keeping the memory of being arrested and journalist interviewed. Ultimately irrelevant, as adult Kara doesn’t have these memories so all her instincts come from remembering Kenny dying. The fact she didn’t wake up married to him during COIE says she never flew back on the weekends to keep in touch.
As the episode performed repeated time travel, it’s apparent that they could have gone back to the point before Kara entered the PZ and put in different co-ordinates for the projector so she ended up on Argo instead. So rather than this adventure being about saving Kara, it’s about closing a time loop. Nia inspires Cat Grant to become Cat Grant (and Cat remembering the pink cougar from the abandoned timeline), ditching men to pursue her career much like Kara is. This means Nia gets to work at CatCo in the future, where she meets Kara and is mentored by her to become Dreamer. More and more, this season is about building Nia up to either work on another show like Legends of Tomorrow, or have her own spin off.
Brainy has finally found a stress management solution that works, and it came from their romantic partner. He’s reached a point where he can cry openly and happily. If the show is still running parallels between Brainy and Nia with Kara and Lena, then his motivational confession about being in a dark place so long that he forgot what good felt like is Kara’s experience of the Phantom Zone. He found happiness with Nia, so Kara should find happiness with Lena. I confess, I’ve been watching the romantic coding of Supercorp so long that I didn’t know if Brainy and Nia were a romantic couple again. But yes they are, with dress up dances and kisses.
I lost count how many Supercorp parallels are in this episode. - Whatever Brainia parallels are going to pan out - Lena leaves Jack to go to National City, the way Kara leaves Kenny to go to National City. Both are decent guys and romantic partners, but ultimately the women make choices that lead away from them. - Kara has a choice to be Super in space, but she chooses to stay on Earth for her romantic partner. Seemingly every iteration of Kara has their reason to choose Earth, and this Kara looks at her romantic partner specifically rather than her sister. - Kenny calls Kara his light, and Lena has been framed in shards of light, described as always falling into the light, and literally provided sunlight to revive Kara in 6x01. - Kenny being given The Half Of It backstory of a dead parent, a depressed parent, and having to take on the family business and choosing his family over a new life with Kara. Lena also having to take on her family business, until this season where she’s freed herself from them. - Kara prepared to out herself (how many times was she going to out herself this episode?) to save her romantic partner, as adult Kara did for Lena in the 100th. - Kenny ready to sacrifice himself for Kara, the way Lena did by standing up to Andrea’s kryptonite dagger at her neck. - Kenny feeling inadequate as a human among all these superheroes, the way Lena did amidst aliens and military soldiers in 6x04. - “And then I met you” direct dialogue comparison with Lena in the Fortress in 5x07. - Kenny coming alive as a scientist and tech geek, the way Lena is, and the specific paralle of Lena being aboard the Daxamite ship and opening the shut doors. - Kenny being the enthusiastic in this romance, while Kara treats it as an obligation to fit in. She didn’t choose this life, the way she’s felt obligated to all her male romances. Kara’s been on a date with a man every season except season 4, and here she shows no physical intimacy with Kenny. The date with Cat’s son, James ‘should have worked out’, Mon-El having the kinship of surviving their planets, Being pressured by her friends and family to date William. In contrast, Kara has always chosen Lena, often despite opposition from her found family.
The trailer for next episode has a snippet of Lena, and she trended worldwide higher than Kenny.
