TFTP: Bloc Party in Perth, WA
Hi, hello, and welcome!
My name is Skyler and camera malfunctions will be the absolute death of me. More of that in a moment, but first: a word from our sponsors:
We have no sponsors.
Ah. Right. Well... let’s get on with this review, shall we?
T’was the Wednesday before the Bloc Party show when my camera setup decided to fail me. To save time, let’s just summarise it as “I couldn’t shoot Bloc Party”.
My dudes, “pissed off” was an understatement. I was done with life and everything to do with it, and I dreaded trying to look for someone else to shoot. I quickly realised that everyone would be at Pride that day, and that I was left with no option but to give up the pass. (I still hate myself for that.)
I still had my ticket, though, so all was well.
We decided to just drive to Red Hill this time around, and lemme tell you: the traffic is dense around there. We got in just before Haiku Hands were about to hit the stage.
Their set was absolutely ecstatic. They had the entire crowd dancing around, which is a difficult feat for an opening band. From their first song to their last note, Haiku Hands brought smiles upon the faces of every audience member, and they certainly made some new fans at Red Hill.
They’re one of those bands that you just... overlook. You find out that they’ll be touring as support acts and you think nothing of it, because you don’t know them and their capabilities.
But then you hear them play, you see them smashing the shit outta that stage, and you realise that you really should’ve gotten to know them beforehand, because your experience might’ve been slightly more elevated.
Now, I freaken love them.
Intermission.
Stare blankly at the skyline in the distance.
Intense screaming.
Oh right, Bloc Party!
Their performance was humbly brilliant. They put all their energy into delivering a seemingly effortless set, but we all know that t’was far from effortless.
The band was as hyped as the crowd, with both sides of the barricade on their feet and bobbing around. The show felt even more thrilling and exciting than Pride, which was going on some thirty kilometres away.
Everyone was screaming along with the lyrics, completely mesmerised by the band known as Bloc Party.
Their set ended far too quickly and I found myself in traffic once more. Remind me to take a shuttle bus next time.
MUSICAL SUMMARY:
Haiku Hands: underrated/5
Bloc Party: Pride is shook/5
Live long and headbang,

TFTP: the Wombats in Perth, WA
In which Red Hill becomes Red Rock, we photograph the Wombats, and hang out in a cage.
Hi, hello, and welcome!
My name is Skyler and I love Quentin Tarantino films, which is about to become hella obvious with all my Hateful Eight references - but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
And then, about a week ago, my lucky ass got an email from the lovely crew at Secret Sounds, confirming I’d be photographing the Wombats. Suffice it to say, I was shook.
I’d never been to Red Hill before, but apparently it had a dense ibis population and that was already scaring me shitless. (Yes, that ibis fear is still alive and kicking.) But besides that, I was hyped and ready to go.
We decided to take the fancy bus system, aka the Red Hill Express, from the Rosemount Hotel to the venue. We arrived almost an hour before the bus was set to depart, so we hung out in the nearby Coles and bought edgy vegan food; as ya do.
T’was a wild ride, mateys.
We arrived at Red Hill just as the skyline was illuminated with the most beautiful lights and colours. I didn’t snap any photos, but holy shit was it lovely.
Eves Karydas’ set started a few minutes later. I didn’t know what to expect, but as the lights dimmed down and the band made their way on stage, I not-so-slowly but surely realised that this would be one hell of a great set.
Eves’ vocals were absolutely astounding. I found myself trying not to “casually” dance along whilst photographing, which is hella difficult with such a brilliant artist on stage. She brought such a Tumblr-esque aesthetic to Red Hill and I’m living for it.
Also... like... is it socially acceptable to climb on speakers whilst photographing? ‘Cause like... I’m not saying I did that, but... I kinda did...
Regardless, Eves bloody killed it.
Intermission.
I dashed past Security Dude and off into the photo pit. As I emu’d (yes, emu’d) around with a camera - that is, half-dancing, half-running, and 100% looking the absolute opposite of cool and edgy - I got to appreciate the band known as Cloud Control.
Mateys
M a t e y s
These dudes are such a good band ??? What the fuck ??? I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t always check out the opening acts prior a concert, and right now I’ll be the first to admit that bands like Cloud Control are the reason why I should.
Their set was like the MDMA of live music, and I am here *clap emoji* for *clap emoji* it *clap emoji*.
Look at me being edgy with my non-emoji emoji use!
*Murder meeee with a buter knifeeeeee*
Intermission.
Soon, the lights dimmed (yet again) and an intense screaming overloaded my eardrums. The Wombats came onstage, one by one, kicking off their set.
I was somewhere betwixt singing, dancing, photographing, and apologising to everyone around me as the Wombats smashed the absolute shit out of Red Hill. Their performance was full of energy, enthusiasm, and an eternal love for their fans. T’was mesmerising seeing such a popular band be so damn humble, and really give 182%.
At one point, I found myself on stage with them!
This image is as exciting as my life gets, but trust me, this was hella exciting.
The band pulled off an incredible set, playing some of their all-time classics and some newer hits. The entire crowd was in love with their performance, singing each and every line back to the band.
It felt like one of those cheesy but wonderful summer concert nights that you see in movies, and I felt privileged to be there.
Live long and headbang,
xx-Skyler Slate
