benefits - @rosekillermicrofic - word count: 210
"So, I was thinking..." Barty murmured, avoiding Evan's eyes.
"What's that?" Evan asked, looking over from where he was staring at the wireless, following the Quidditch game currently being broadcast. He wasn't in the best mood- the Wasps were being destroyed, so he was guaranteed to have to deal with Regulus's stupid bragging the next day.
"Did you know when people get married, they get tax breaks?" Barty asked, his voice seemingly casual, but Evan caught a waver.
"Er...yeah?" He asked, trying to stay calm as he processed the words. What, exactly, did Barty mean by married?
Barty nodded, eyes wide. "There's...there's other reasons, as well. Erm, benefits, you know?"
Evan almost laughed out loud. "To getting married?" he confirmed, squeezing his shaking hands. Marriage? With Barty?
Barty nodded silently.
"B, are you saying you want to get married?" Evan whispered, a gigantic smile breaking over his face. A marriage with Barty was such a crazy, ridiculous, perfect concept that he almost wanted to cry over it.
"Well, it would be smart, is all," Barty mumbled, looking down.
But Evan grabbed his chin and guided it so their eyes met. "I agree," he said solemnly. "Best idea you've ever had, actually."
And both of them grinned at each other, ecstatic.

@wolfstarmicrofic 30th: Breakup
380 words
“Because she's my best friend!”
“That's all the more reason to tell her!” Lily argues, as she stands in front of the couch Marlene is curled up on. “You know what a good fit you are, you know how well you get on, you know Dorcas is not the kind of person to ever mock you for it, even if she doesn't feel the same,” Lily starts listing off as she paces up and down. “And if she does feel the same, you'll have this great foundation of friendship to build a relationship upon, and you'll have-”
“So much to lose!” Marlene interjects. “Lily,” she sighs, letting herself fall on her back on the couch. “Dorcas is my best friend, one of the most important people in my life. If she doesn't feel the same… Hell, even if she does feel the same, but we somehow muck it up, there's no coming back from that. We'll be forever changed, never the way we were.” Marlene shakes her head. “I don't think I'm willing to risk that.”
“Marls, do you know how many assumptions you are making?” Lily asks. “That it's bound to go up in smoke, for starters. But even if that happens, that doesn't have to permanently damage your friendship.”
Marlene gives her a skeptical look. “How on earth could that not affect a friendship?”
“Remus!” Lily suddenly exclaims, and Remus gives a start, almost dropping the piece of chocolate he was about to eat from the pile they had brought to cheer up Marlene (and if she's not eating it, someone's gotta).
“What?” he asks.
“You and Sirius were best friends,” Lily states. “Then you got together, dated for a while, broke up, and now you're still close friends.”
Remus nods.
“So it's possible!” Lily exclaims. “It's possible to go through a breakup and still be best friends after! Tell Marlene it's possible! Tell her that even the worst-case-scenario doesn't have to be so bad!”
Remus turns to Marlene. “It's not so bad,” he says dutifully.
Lily smiles triumphantly, but Remus continues. “At least, if you don't mind being constantly reminded of the worst mistake you ever made and seeing every single day how you let the best thing that ever happened to you get away, that is.”

Breakup
@wolfstarmicrofic | Post-Prank | Word count: 183
"Moony, I'm so sorry—"
"Don't call me that." Remus snapped, his voice a harsh whisper. He couldn't even bear to look him in the eye. "Don't you dare, Sirius."
"Remus..." Sirius's voice cracked; the sound of it would have broken Remus under any other circumstances, but not now. "I'll do anything you want, anything. Just... please, I can't lose you. I can't."
Remus laughed—a sharp, bitter laugh that echoed through the room. "You should have thought of that before you stabbed me in the back."
When Remus finally looked at him, Sirius's eyes were wide with desperation. His lower lip trembled, and his eyes were glassy with unshed tears. And Remus knew; at that moment, Sirius realized it was over. They were over.
"You know," Remus said, his voice barely above a whisper, breaking the suffocating silence. "You were the first person I ever opened my heart to."
Sirius met his gaze, his once bright blue eyes now dull and lifeless with sorrow. He didn't even try to hide the tears streaming down his face.
"And you're the reason it will forever be locked away."

mess - @rosekillermicrofic - word count: 275
TW: mentioned homophobia
It was early. Regulus was still out and Barty normally spent his evenings relaxing in the Common Room. So Evan was shocked when he entered their shared dorm to see Barty there, crying quietly, clutching at a letter.
"Oh! S-sorry," Evan muttered, eyes wide, as Barty scrambled to wipe at the mess of tears and eyeliner running down his cheeks.
"It's nothing," Barty mumbled, turning away. "Something in my eye, that's all. I-"
But Evan knew him better than that. "Bullshit," he said softly. "Who's the letter from, B?"
Barty turned, looking at him nervously. "It's nothing," he insisted.
"Your dad?" Evan pushed, stepping closer, trying to resist the urge to pull Barty into his arms.
"Turns out he's not fond of the idea of having a queer son," Barty scoffed, clearly trying to put on a brave face even as tears continued to fall. "Said he'd rather I not come home for the holidays now-"
"You're queer?" Evan interrupted, before realizing that was not the point.
But Barty seemed to be willing to answer. "Erm. Yeah. Sorry, I should've told you differently. I-"
"No," Evan whispered, stepping forward to rest a hand on his shoulder. "I just- That's actually- I mean- sorry, I'm buggering this up. Your dad is a piece of shit. A literal asshole. He doesn't deserve the spot on the planet he inhabits, really-"
Barty let out a choked laugh.
"But fuck, B, I can't even pretend to be upset, because I've fancied you for years, you know?"
And, suddenly, Barty looked a lot happier. "Couldn't even wait five minutes to tell me, eh?" he asked, mustering up a flirtatious wink.

@jegulus-microfic / tie / 248 words / @malchai
Regulus hates mornings. Sleeping in and going to bed late always felt the most comfortable for him. He made sure to go into a career that allowed him to work his own hours, and writing was perfect for that.
James loves mornings. He’s an absolute romantic, and truly believes that the moment sunlight peeks through his window a new day, with new opportunities started. That no matter how bad the night was, he gets a new chance that day.
Now, when Regulus wakes up, no matter how grumpy he is, the moment James starts giving him sweet kisses he can’t help but smile. He enjoys the rays that enter his room when the sun is still waking up too.
He has no need to start his day early, but there’s nothing that he loves more than doing it with James. Regulus cooks while James prepares their tea and then he cleans everything up while James changes. And every day, James will come down with a tie and silently give it to him.
“You always make them look nice, love.” Big golden eyes stare at him, lovingly. Regulus always obliges.
Regulus started having fun and tried to play in different ways each time. His careful fingers are always finding ways to brush James’ neck while working on the last touches.
“You look handsome,” Regulus makes sure to tell him.
He can’t hate mornings. Not when they are so full of sun. So full of James. So full of love.

broken up rosekiller trying so hard to move on from each other but they just can’t. they keep thinking they see each other in passing cars, in shops, in a carpark, but it’s never them. or if it is them, they never get the chance to look at them properly before they’ve disappeared. they have each other blocked online because the breakup was rough but sometimes they see each other in their friends’ posts and they can’t escape, not if they wanted to

Evan: When we die would you share a grave with me?
Barty: Of course, then you would be on top of me even in death.
Regulus, from the other side of the room: Will you shut up, if you really can't handle some silencing charms once in a while, at least spare me this.
Barty: You're welcome to join us anytime, Reg.
Regulus: ...
Regulus: ... I hate you both.

One of the people in the marauders era that I have the most sympathy for is Regulus, but not for the reason you think.
Think about it: this poor guy had to live with Evan and Barty IN THE SAME DORM ROOM as them for seven years, most of which was characterized by Evan’s hopeless pining and Barty’s painful obliviousness, which made for some… tense situations, to say the least. And then there’s that brief period of time where they’re both aware of their crush on the other and that’s almost worse for Regulus because now Barty’s rehearsing entire essays on how pretty Evan’s eyes are, and Evan’s refusing to listen to his friends when they say that Barty likes him back because Evan just can’t believe it.
And Regulus thought that all of that was bad, but nothing could’ve prepared him for when Rosekiller actually gets together. Barty’s practically sitting in Evan’s lap in the common room, there’s never a moment when they aren’t touching in some way, shape, or form, and Regulus is frequently not allowed back into the dorm room at random points on random days—frankly, it’s absolutely miserable for him.
And don’t get me started on poor Pandora, who is Evan’s SISTER and has to witness all of that go down, too.
I just. Ugh. Feel so bad for the friends of Rosekiller because I know that they were so obnoxious all of the time because they have zero chill whatsoever.
