Why Strange Fate?
It’s not entirely about the book, of course. I expect Strange Fate will be a good book if we ever get to read it, but there are a lot of good books in the world. And it’s partly the mystery. We’ve been wondering how it ends for quite a while, but we can make it up for ourselves, and judging by fanfiction.net at least a few people have.
The thing about Strange Fate is more about Ms. Smith’s story, how much misery the universe has dumped on her and how much we’d like to see her come back and climb on top of that mountain and win. She’s a good writer and she seems like a nice lady and a lot of us have been rooting for her for many, many years. If we see Strange Fate that means she’s gotten back into writing and publishing and done it in spite of her challenging circumstances. A win for the writing spirit over mundane crap! She’s so close, it’s just a few more steps! And then we could cheer.
But from the canceling of Strange Fate and Ms. Smith’s silence on the internet I have to assume that whatever the universe smacked her with at the beginning of this year was something she couldn’t climb on top of. But she seems to still be alive—or at any rate wikipedia doesn’t report her death—so I like to think she’s winning now just by being well enough to play with her beloved dog.
And who knows what will happen in the future. Ms. Smith has plenty of moxie and writers gotta write, and she already pulled one comeback. I think I’ll keep rooting for her.
