Emulation-noitalumE
It is not a coincidence that our greatest scientists are working to make artificial intelligence more and more human-like. This visual imitation can be quite rare, even scary. However, the main objective of this technology is the complete emulation of our behaviour. To achieve this objective there is still a lot of work to be done, however, this does not mean that we are safe from the collateral effects of this process because in the search for a final objective steps are taken, secondary objectives are achieved as well. AIs are nothing more than pieces of technology that are being incorporated into the market and therefore, into our daily lives. Examples of this are virtual assistants like Google Home, Alexa or Siri. First indications of the interactions between humans and machines that leaving us great lessons. Many of us find it difficult to understand how these assistant’s work. It is difficult to understand the logic that allows the machine to give us a right or wrong answer and it is often frustrating not to get the answer we expect to hear. A fact: it is already happening to us that we forget that we are interacting with a block of plastic, lithium and some cables.
Another fact is that these AIs are going to get smarter and smarter. They will be part of everything. Any action that can be useful to alleviate the burden of being human will be carried out by a robot. As we have discussed in previous posts, robots will perform all tedious, repetitive and dangerous tasks for us. This situation will present us with two options: either we dedicate ourselves to a greater purpose, for example, enjoy each day to the full or join the fight for social justice. Either we will become a mostly lazy race. Or worse, we will be focused on exclusively satisfying our ego over other people's lives and now, over the misuse of those machines. There is no story in which this ends well. Again, the responsibility is on us and nothing but us. And seeing in perspective the direction that the planet is taking: would it be understood that a machine considers us obsolete, destructive and therefore a threat?

AI ! AI ! AI ! or AY!-AY!-AY! ?
Humans and artificial intelligence are meant to understand each other. It is a symbiotic relationship between teacher and apprentice. Of father and son. Of course, there are several threats and risks when implementing artificial intelligence but surely these threats come from the human factor rather than from the artificial part, from what is built. Because, and this is not a popular saying, children look like their parents. Dogs to their masters. Artificial intelligence is designed to receive orders, they are even programmed to learn new things, this is not something that machines, which are still machines, do by themselves. So the risks come from ourselves. For this reason, before programming machines, we must program ourselves, a concept known as education. Why? To define the limits and scope of technology. Always and only thinking of the common good.
It would be very arrogant of us to pretend to teach a machine about values, ethics, morals or free will. Although, we have not yet achieved mastery over these complicated issues. We must remain humble in front of our greatness. Because as humans we are capable of creating wonderful things but we are also capable of wonderfully destroy them, in an evil sense.
On the other hand, although AI technology is rapidly advancing, we are still witnessing its birth. It is still ahead to get the machines to become aware of their own existence. This means that they can understand that they are an autonomous and unique individual. A step still far away that precedes the final step: that the machines are aware that they do not need us, something that will not happen, at least not today.

The Magic Behind the Scenes!
How we measure intelligence is a larger discussion that should we have it in a different blog, but it helps us as a tool to understand the type of intelligence that we refer to when we discuss the subject of AI. Hence, we can easily conclude that Artificial Intelligences are designed to perform both simple and complex actions in a faster and more efficient way, but this does not automatically make them smarter. Moreover, we have not considering some relevant aspects such as morality and ethics, up to now restricted to the human race.
We are quite amazed about what some robots can do these days, that's for sure. They give us a nervous laugh because they take us by surprise, but deep down they scare us a little. Personally, a robot like Sophia (see my previous post) scares me because its behaviour is very similar to human behaviour and I already know well what a human being is capable of. Moreover, because I can't stop wondering if there is a God complex behind these creations. History has not taught us good lessons about humans wanting to become gods.
But as scary as it may sound, AI is still a man-made technology. In other words, what AI does is nothing more than following a program created conscientiously by an extraordinary group of people. They follow perfectly chained orders and, in a way, they have boundaries, limits. This gives us a certain sense of control and also helps us to understand that the intelligence behind creation is even more amazing. The capacity of the human mind is what should really amaze us, of course, in the most optimistic context. Only this feeling should encourage the human race to go further.
It is important to mention that memory is an important part of both machines and humans. In the human case, it is crucial not to forget the lessons of the past and to understand that the actions of the present have a direct effect on our future, even though we have learned this today from a robot named Sophia.

Are humans intelligent?
The next interesting question about AI is whether robots are smarter than us. Many think that the question is quite obvious and therefore prefer to ask when, if not now, they will be more intelligent. But before getting into this discussion, it is important to think about what intelligence means to people. So, we could think that intelligence, in a "traditional" way, is just the ability to remember and handle data, dates or detailed information on some complex matter. Or we could think that being intelligent is about knowing how to make the appropriate decisions at the right time taking into account some variables, the context and circumstances of that specific moment. This leads us to review how human intelligence is measured. For several decades the best-known index to measure human intelligence has been the IQ. However, this test is not entirely accurate because it does not measure the broad spectrum of the human intellect. It only measures a limited part of human intelligence, ruling out other factors that must be taken into account and that are now the subject of more in-depth research. For example, short-term memory, reasoning, and verbal ability. We all know people with poor reasoning ability but brilliant memory or fantastic language skills but not very good at reasoning, etc. All these factors also make us unique! But before continuing, take a look at the above/below video with Mr. Robbins and Sophia. Enjoy!

In Ourselves!
Autonomous and repetitive work. Sounds good at the moment. Sometimes it is difficult to accept that someone does something better than us. We all seek mastery in what we do, but most of the time there is someone who does it better. Now, we must accept that an AI has entered that competition and that surely, in many of those and other jobs, we are going to lose.
Here is where we must understand what this means for us. I have had to do those types of jobs and I really do not enjoy them very much and my human condition forces me to look for something better. So, if I have not to do this type of work anymore. Can I then find new ways of working? Could I follow my instincts? Could I follow my passions? Can I do what I really enjoy doing? Could I pursuit my biggest dreams?
On the other hand, what if my passion is to be a driver, packer, telemarketer, stockbroker or supermarket cashier? Well, I should be concerned. Or simply, I should keep growing and adapting to change in the best possible way ... isn't this what we do every day?
Then, AI is part of our lives and we must deal with it because it helps us to evolve and, in a certain way, motivates us to seek a greater purpose.

Of course!
Artificial Intelligence is no science fiction anymore. It has been part of us for a long time. It is true that for most of us the main source of information about artificial intelligence comes from movies, series and books. These pieces of imagination about AI are right in some aspects and far from reality in others.
AI has, indeed, been replacing many jobs that humans usually do, but this does not represent a direct threat to our existence. On the contrary, in many facets, AI is here to help us. To help us to evolve.
AIs are made to optimize resources. This is a fact present in all stages of human evolution. Thus, automobiles replaced carts and horse and autonomous vehicles will replace drivers. Mankind has been adapted to this situation and will continue to do so. The key to understanding and accepting these changes is to know the benefits of any AI implementation. For instance, how many lives can be saved by preventing a drunk driver from taking the wheel of a car? It is an extreme example, however, most of the accidents on the streets happen due to the negligence of the drivers.
The above/below video will explain the situation better.
