The saddest part is that I can’t even use most of these in a Regency novel because truth is allowed to be stranger and way more on-the-nose than fiction.

Regency parents are putting modern baby name shenanigans to shame, and I’m here for it.

Imagine. A kid who’s been neglected, starved for validation, shamed for vulnerability, punished for kindness, physically marred, and manipulated to the point of not being able to recognize actual love for years likes hugs. Should probably pair him with someone who’s allergic to affection.
(Also, when did Zuko commit war crimes? The closest thing I can think of is destroying the buildings on Kyoshi Island when they harbored a fugitive and met his soldiers with an armed force. Yes, he was definitely the aggressor, but does that count as a war crime? Genuinely not sure. 🧐)
Crazy that the most huggable member of Team Avatar is the previous war criminal

Zuko: Let’s not Toph this into a worse situation than it already is.
Toph: ...Did you just use my name as a verb??

How can you say you’re a feminist when you ship zutara that’s the most misogynist shit there
Clearly you don’t know me at all because I just posted this pretty recently:
Zutara isn’t a canon romance, but even as a friendship, it presents a narrative that gave Katara power in the story. Their canon friendship advanced Katara’s arc without relegating her to an accessory…very much unlike her canon romance did. In my experience, the majority of people (women, we’re almost all women) who like Zutara do so because we enjoy the idea of an alternate ending that gives her more power and agency than canon did.
If you think Zutara is inherently misogynistic all I can figure is that you got your information from a bad Wattpad tier fanfic instead of the actual show 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s true. Lee from the tea shop told me himself.
im certain that when zuko doesn't want to be recognized as he gets older (he works at the jasmine dragon sometimes and you can fight the wall on that, or just going out with friends whtv) and people are like "hey aren't you the firelord????" he just says with no hesitation at all "no his scar is on the other side" like no matter how incredibly obvious it is that he Is in fact fire lord zuko he's like nah man I'm just Lee from the tea shop

One of these days, I’m going to write a fanfic just so Sokka and Katara can argue about this.
“You let that conwoman decide who you should marry when you were fourteen???”
“She’s not a conwoman. She was right about everything. And she said I would marry a powerful bender.”
“So marry Toph.”
“Aunt Wu also said I would have grandchildren.”
“Iroh, then.”
*squick*
“Literally everyone we know is a powerful bender. Except Suki, and she’s mine. That narrows your options down not at all.”
The Fortune in The Fortune Teller
This is an isolated look into this specific episode.
Tumblr media
The Fortune Teller is the 14th episode of book 1 of Avatar: The Last Airbender. It is famous for supposedly developping the show's romantic subplot between Katara and A\ang. The episode does two things: A\ang attempts to flirt with Katara, and Katara is finally willing to consider him as more than just a friend.
However, I believe that this episode could have masterfully foreshadowed the pair not getting together in the end. In this essay I will detail how each step the episode takes towards a Kat@ang endgame is actually foreshadowing the opposite.
1. Katara and the Nature of Destiny
In the beginning, the Gaang meets a person getting attacked by a bear. He is acting incredibly passive, simply dodging the bear's attemps at his life. Then, A\ang and Appa interfere to help the man. When the Gaang questions him on why he was so passive, he says it's because the Fortune Teller told him he'd have a safe journey. They then have the following exchange:
Tumblr media
The man's logic is obviously flawed. If the Gaang didn't interfere, if the man continued to passivaly dodge, the bear would have attacked him. Fortune and destiny come from agency – from actively shaping them.
However, Katara is delaited at the prospect of seeing the future. Her and the Gaang go to meet the Fortune Teller, Aunt Wu. Aunt Wu tells her she'll marry a very powerful bender. Later, she comes back asking more details about her future husband. Remember her excitment, fantacising about her future husband:
Tumblr media
After that, Katara becomes somewhat reliant on Aunt Wu's prophecies. She goes as far as to ask her what she should eat.
Tumblr media
And she obeys her "prophecy", despite not wanting to. She became like the man from the beginning. She knowingly follows the fortune even though it doesn't make sense. She had given up on forging her own destiny.
Although by the end of the episode, she is no longer in this state of reliance, she still believes in the prophecies. Then, Sokka says that A\ang is a very powerful bender. This reminds her of what Aunt Wu said about her future husband. I don't want to cherry pick, so I took 4 different pictures of her face when she realizes A\ang might be the powerful bender she is to marry:
Tumblr media
With the look in her eyes, with her mouth tilted down and with the ominous music, this could easily be read as disappointment. Especially when remembering how she fantacized about the powerful bender earlier in the episode. She doesn't smile, but looks concerned. As if she doesn't want this. Earlier in the episode, she says this:
Tumblr media
A\ang is like the papaya. The fortune says he's right for her, but Katara doesn't want him. Now, she isn't like the man, passively dodging the bear attacking her. She shouldn't sit and wait for the prophecy to come true point blank. She has the agency to shape her own destiny and not to choose A\ang as her future husband.
2. A\ang, Meng, and First Crushes
In this episode we're introduced to a girl named Meng. Aunt Wu told her she'd end up with someone like A\ang, and so she developped a one sided crush on him. Throughout the episode she attempts to talk to him, all to no avail. Because A\ang is not interested in her.
Interestingly, her one sided crush is directly paralleled to A\ang's crush on Katara.
Exhibit A:
Tumblr media
Exhibit B:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Exhibit C:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please note that in exhibits B and C in particular, there is an emphasis on the other party not reciprocating their feelings.
In this parallel the show draws, A\ang is Meng, the younger, shorter one the one who is in love; and Katara is A\ang, the older, taller one who... *checks notes*... doesn't reciprocate.
But in the end, A\ang and Meng have a heart-to-heart.
Tumblr media
Sometimes you'll like someone, and they aren't going to feel the same way, and even though it's hard, it's okay. They're young, just kids having a crush. A\ang responds to this with "I know what you mean". Because he, just like the audience that watched the parallels, knows that Katara likely doesn't return his feelings.
———————
In conclusion, The Fortuneteller could have been brilliant foreshadowing to Kata\ang not being the endgame couple, and it would have done so through beautiful, mature lessons about first loves and destiny. Thank you for reading.

My own musings on the state of Katara's life with Aang:
We're both pro-Zutara here. Same team. But you seem to be operating under the notion that a woman that doesn't punch a time card five days a week must be a happy cog in the patriarchy's machine. So let me clear something up.
Tumblr media
That Kataang marriage I mentioned?
She worked longer, harder hours outside the home than he did. Then she came home and did ALL the work for a family of six while he ran off to play. And he only spent time with the one kid who shared the same interests he had.
That Zutara partnership I recommend every girl hold out for?
He supports me in anything and everything I want to do with my life: Being present for our kids (three of whom have special needs). Going back to school. Pursuing my dream of being a published author. Taking care of myself because I've got a laundry list of chronic illnesses to manage. Starting my own business. And if I want a nine-to-five? He's all for it. He always backs me up. He always shares the load. And when he's home, he works even harder than I do. He may be the breadwinner, but he's always a dad first.
Now tell me, if you can, that the husband whose wife earns her own money must naturally hold her in higher regard. Tell me that her paycheck makes her more free.
Please do try to convince me that a woman who wants to watch her kids grow up and be there when they need her must lack ambition and self-respect. (To me, that seems like the kind of woman who gets excited at the notion of dying surrounded by her children and grandchildren and would never turn her back on people who need her. Not that that sounds like anyone relevant to the conversation…)

This is the latest Sketch-a-Wish voted by my lovely Patreon members for March! Featuring Jacks head-bonking gently encouraging Evangeline, hoping she'll remember *something*. One of my favorite scenes from A Curse For True Love! There are two very subtle symbolism I threw in here (one is the title referencing the scene in the book, the other, in the bg for its cultural meaning) to fuel more angst. ✨fireElmo.gif ✨ ----- Stephanie has graciously allowed me to add this artwork to my shop collection of licensed prints, already up via the links in my bio! ----- Hope you all have a pleasant week! :)

“Sorry to break your fairytale, Little Fox, but ballads don’t end happily, and neither do the two of us”
—Jacks🍎🤧
The fact that Jacks thinks that he knows how things are gonna go for him and Eva is so sad and still funny.
He believes they’re going to be sad forever and apart. But then he uses the stones and he admits (more for himself than for us lol) that there’s nothing of equal value for him like Evangeline and her life, so i think that he believes there’s a way of being with her eventually.
I can’t wait until i read some POV of Jacks on ACFTL and see the way he sees her and how he feels for her and how he’s gonna feel sad and heartbroken 💔 like the Prince Of Broken Hearts that he is when Eva dosen’t remember him.
Also, he’s definitely gonna try to go away first for her “safety” and “well being” but he wont be able to let go of her cause HE LOVES HER SO DEARLY 🤧💕
