“Well, when I was nine years old, Star Trek came on, I looked at it and I went screaming through the house, ‘Come here, mum, everybody, come quick, come quick, there’s a black lady on television and she ain’t no maid!’ I knew right then and there I could be anything I wanted to be.” — Whoopi Goldberg

Nichelle Nichols has passed away.
Martin Luther King once convinced her to continue on as Uhura when she was about to quit. He told her how she was a role model for so many people and had to stay on. He rightfully recognized her as a trailblazer and the inspiration she continued to be.
(Second picture is Nichols participating in a recruitment program for NASA in late 70s/early 80′s, aimed at women and people of color. The third picture is Nichols onboard the stratospheric observatory for infrafred astronomy in 2017, as one of the first non essential personell to be able to do so)

I recognize that by the time Star Trek is happening, they probably have more advanced ways of fixing vision problems (i.e. refractive errors such as nearsightedness).
However, I can't help but think about Bones in reading glasses.
Specifically, these:

Bedside Manner
As Jim's sister you tended to be a little more adventurous, a side effect of stealing cars at 10 and trying to keep up with your brother. As Leonard McCoy's fiance, and the ship's resident counselor you'd been mostly tamed in adulthood. When you and Jim have to do something really stupid to save a lot of lives you can only hope that the CMOs bedside manner is kinder than his eyes.
Featuring: moody doctors with no coping skills and real relationship sex.
You knew as soon as the Klingon blade hit your side you were fucked. It didn't exactly change anything, but you couldn't help but make note of it mentally. Your hand went to your side and almost immediately you felt the sickening tug of your stomach as you felt blood rush to your palm.
You turned and made eye-contact with your twin brother, "Jim," You gasped out as you felt yourself sway.
He rushed to your side and pulled you close to his body. "Shhh, I've got you," he tried to soothe. His hand covering yours as he applied pressure as well, knowing your grip wasn't enough. "Sullivan, get the damn core. Now. Negotiations have failed." He barked orders as he pulled you out of the building to a safe spot to beam up. You heard phasers going off behind you, but you couldn't focus well enough to know what was happening. "Last time I let you talk me into finding a peaceful solution," you heard Jim mumble. "Bones is going to kill me "
You paled a little at that. You knew Leonard would be mad that you had even gone down with the away team, which is why you hadn't told him. He was on duty all day today, and so you'd assumed he wouldn't know until you came back and everything was fine. It was the best way when it came to more risky missions and your grumbling fiance. He didn't think the ship's counselor should be out on exploratory missions or hostile negotiations like this one, but he knew your role and handled it when necessary. What he wouldn't approve of was that deadly force had be approved by Starfleet, and therefore negotiations weren't necessary. You and Jim had wanted to save as many lives as possible, so you'd tried to negotiate. It was going well until you'd messed up and been too informal with Jim, the Klingon Captain had seen it as disrespectful towards your superior and stabbed you.
"Jim..." You hesitated. "Could you call someone else to transport? Leonard doesn't need to know."
Jim gave you a look, before nodding. "You owe me for this if he finds out," came his threat. He tapped the comm on his chest. "Two to beam up, have Dr. Kelley meet us in the transporter room Scotty."
----------------------------------------------------------
When you made it back to the ship the other doctor was already there. He had a gurney and his tri-corder ready as Jim lifted you lightly to get you positioned. Dr. Kelley scanned your body as you felt yourself become dizzy, you grabbed Jim's hand urgently as you felt darkness pulling you into it's embrace.
"Not a word Jim," was all you managed before sleep claimed you.
When you woke up you were in a mobile biobed, and you felt the tight pull at your skin. You weren't in the med bay though you noticed, as you looked around you felt yourself tense and relax as you recognized Jim's office. Your brother was sitting on the floor across from you looking miserable and half asleep.
"Jim?" You voice was raw and cracked.
"Oh thank God!" He claimed jumping up, "You know I thought for sure this time I'd gotten you killed. Lucky for us Dr. Kelley was able to bring this in here. I was able to spin a story about..." Before he could finish his office door flew open and Leonard stormed in.
"Bones!" Jim said, startled. "You can't just come into the Captain's office," Jim tried. You could see in Leonard's eyes though that it didn't matter. He was furious as he stormed over to you.
Once he made it he began looking through the panel on the side, looking at the charts and graphs that monitored your condition. "Bones, she's fine," Jim tried to soothe. Knowing eventually Leonard's anger would move to him.
"Jim," you said softly, keeping your eyes on the fire in your fiance's eyes. "Give us a minute."
Jim looked between the two of you for a moment, before nodding and running out the door. Not wanting to deal with the doctor's wrath. Even after the door was shut Leonard didn't speak. His eyes searching for any sign that you weren't okay.
It took a minute before his eyes met yours again, "Care to tell me why I had to find out about this from Ensign Sullivan?" His southern drawl was missing it's usual playful note, and the lack of endearment at the end further solidified just how angry he was.
"It wasn't a big deal," You tried.
"You lied to me, you got stabbed, AND you had Jim call Kelley?!?!?" His fury erupted in that moment.
You lifted the panel keeping you in the machine and reached for him, "Len, I'm okay." You pulled him between your legs and put one hand on the side of his face. With the other you took his hand and placed it on the newly regenerated skin. The wound was still puckered, but mostly healed. You positioned yourself so that his eyes, still filled with fury, had to meet yours. "I'm right here. I'm okay." You said again, hoping that you'd get through to him.
He let out a haggard breath, "You really don't get it do you?" His eyes searched yours for a long minute, before, without warning, he pulled away. You sat dumbfounded as he left the room and Jim meekly slunk in.
"Everything alright?" He asked.
"Honestly Jim, I have no idea."
----------------------------------------------------------
By day three of Leonard's silent treatment you could safely say, things were definitely not alright. Though a silent treatment would imply that you'd seen your fiance in those three days. According to the nurses he was working round the clock in the med bay, and you were too chicken shit to go down there. Still it was strange, you had all the evidence of him in your shared quarters yet none of the normal comforts. He'd been leaving before you woke up and coming back long after you'd gone to bed, even opting to sleep on the couch instead of beside you.
Which lead to a difficult situation. Your wound had somehow gotten infected, and you really would've preferred to just have had Leonard look at it, but it was looking like you'd need to go down to the med bay to have it looked at. You knew better than to push Leonard when he got like this. It wasn't that he would be cruel or unloving, but he needed space and he'd come to you when he was ready.
Still putting this off would only make things between you worse, so as you said goodbye to your last client you made your way down to his lab instead of to your quarters. You noticed he was in one of the private rooms, and most of the nurses were off duty or tending to the overnight patients, so you sat in one of the chairs for people who just needed a quick visit and waited. Leonard stopped short when he came out of the room and saw you sitting there. He sighed roughly before jerking his head towards the other room, further back, as the one he'd just been in needed to be sanitized.
The hard look in Leonard's eyes was still there, and you sat up on the table and waited as he prepared the room, "What's the problem?" His voice was harsher than it had been with you before, but there was an edge to it. You couldn't quite put your finger on what that meant.
"I think my side is infected," you didn't mean to make your voice sound so small, but faced with his anger it came naturally.
Leonard's eyes flashed with concern as he ran the tri-corder over your side. "I need a better look," he mumbled.
You nodded as you pulled your duty dress over your head. Leonard's eyes flashed momentarily as he took you in, before gentle hands probed at the healing skin. He pushed and lightly tugged at the healing area, before standing up straighter.
"Looks like it's fine, just a little residual discoloration. Probably internal bruising," his hands didn't leave your skin as he spoke. His eyes meeting yours for the first time in days.
"Lee, I'm..."
"I know," he cut you off. "I am too. I just..." He pulled away as he ran his hands through his hair. "You don't seem to understand just how much I need you to be okay. You make this goddamn deathtrap barrable and to not even tell me? To call someone else?"
It clicked for you then, it wasn't anger you kept seeing in his eyes. It was pain, Leonard was hurt. You reached for him, and this time he came more willingly into your arms. His hands finding your body as you tried to find the words. It didn't seem to matter though as the doctor had his own plans.
He pulled you into a firey kiss, that felt like it wanted to consume you. He tasted like mint and bourbon as his tongue worked it's way into your mouth, and you felt yourself melt under his power. His hands felt like they were everywhere, and it still wasn't enough as his reassured himself you were okay.
He spared no thought to your need to breathe as he plundered your mouth. The hand on your waist trying to pull you into him, while the one on your neck seemed to want to fuse you to his mouth. Eventually the bed beeped signaling your need for oxygen, and while Leonard released you mouth it was only the immediately move to your neck. He was working his way over your body and his hands worked their way over soft skin. He was meticulous as he seemed to be memorizing every curve of you body before he finally pulled away. His eyes scanned your flushed body, searching for a physical sign you weren't okay.
When his lips found yours again it was frantic and rough, and before you knew it you felt Leonard slide into you. He was always slow and gentle, but this was a departure. Quick, rough, and exactly the kind of life affirming sex you assumed Jim had. It was different though, you and Leonard lived each other. This wasn't just adrenaline and lust, it was an actual physical manifestation of the love you had for each other. It didn't matter that he was hurt, or you'd gotten stabbed. You loved this man and he loved you. Despite having already known that you felt giddy. Absolutely giddy realizing the depth at which you felt for him. You couldn't help the laugh that threatened to bubble up in that moment, before Leonard arched an eyebrow and delivered a particularly rough thrust.
"Somethin' funny Darlin'?" he asked as you moaned out.
"I love you Leonard," is all you could say. Your voice taking on the slightly musical note that came with laughter.
"Say it again," he asked.
"I love you," you said kissing him. He gripped your hips and thrusted deeply into you.
His fingers found your clit and he roughly worked your body to orgasm. When you finally came undone around you all you could focus on was Leonard. The taste of whiskey in his kiss, the smell of sandalwood and antiseptic, the rough pads of his fingers followed by the smooth feel of hips palms. The way he buried his face in your neck sealed it for you completely. It was unequivocal how much you not only loved this man, but also adored him. He really was the other half to you. The rock in the sea of chaos you knew as your family.
"I love you too, you know" Leonard said after a minute catching his breath.
"You better, because otherwise I'm a lot of work," you smiled up at him brightly.
"Get dressed so I can actually take you to bed," Leonard said winking playfully before sneaking out of the exam room. You could only assume he was making sure he had coverage so he could take the night off. You really couldn't get ready fast enough just wanting to be in Leonard's arms.
You walked out and as Leonard was escorts you to the turbo lift Jim flew in like only he knew how to do.
"There you are! I need you," Jim explained breathless, and you felt Leonard start to deflate beside you. You grabbed his arm, and pulled him to the lift.
"Sorry Jim, off duty," you called closing the door.
Leonard smiles at you as you reached up and kissed him.
