As much as I (sort of) understand this point of view. Outright denying the existence of Amtrak and other transport services does little to identify the actual issues they have, and by your definition, almost no nations have "nationwide public transit".

Amtrak serves every state in the union apart from Alaska, Hawaii, and South Dakota, and is the only transport link to many small towns between the Midwest and West Coast, I highly recommend looking at the route map to see the full extent of the network. The biggest issues with Amtrak's network are frequency and capacity. Amtrak ridership has gone up in recent years and many of the trains can get full, and many places (including big cities such as Pittsburgh and Cincinnati) only have train service very early or very late in the day.

That said, rail in the US definitely exists - though it should exist even more - and is very useful to a lot of people, I'm taking a train to my college orientation and it cost me less than $70 round trip for an actually very comfortable seat. I'd also encourage you to look at some of the proposals for new and expanded rail service.

Oh, and before you ask, yes we do have high-speed rail, the Acela service, and Brightline are already in operation, and California High Speed Rail is literally being built right now.

Anyway so, i live in the us where trains are only used as cargo transportation and the occasional tourist attraction, which is crazy? B/c that makes us one of the only "first world" countries that dont have a nation wide public trasit system (beside planes?), a travesty in my personal opinion, b/c all of that land? And no bullet trains? And in a car it can take (no rest stops or staying in hotels) about 6ish days to travel from the east coast to the west coast. Do you know how long that would be with the average public train speed(50-60 mph/80-97kph)(no stops)???? A little less than 2 days... and we dont have trains? For some reason?(big auto, fuck big auto). It would make the country so fucking acessable to everyone in it and visiting. It would make visitng relatives across states so much easier, it would aliveiate trafic jams in big cities (a little bit). And like the average american has been to around 18 states (i cant remember the exact nuber) and somewhere around 10ish% have never left their home state. And i think about 2% have been to half of the states (which i am very lucky to be apart of) and this isn't even talking about the amount of americans who havent even left the country (me lol) having an actual public rail system would help so many people and create so many opertunities

All in all trains are great and awesome the us should have them especially with how ridiculously big it is, all i want for my 20th birthday is for the us to get public rail :(

Wasn’t he literally the only person to actually to offer them more pay? When I was watching this I remember my dad saying “why is nobody throwing money at the problem it would literally work”. And the fact that NOBODY ELSE though that if you just paid your workers more they would actually do good work and you wouldn’t have to do stupid things in air ducts.

Honestly that whole arc was probably my low point of the season, it wasn’t so much badly written as it was “why are all these people so clueless in understanding the most basic principles of industrial relations”.

Can I just say that I love seeing more women (and just any non straight/cis men) in traditionally nerdy communities like rail enthusiasts groups and flightsimming is really cool. Can we all just appreciate for a moment that "run it like a business" doesn't really mean anything.

There are loads of ways to run a business and they have their merits and drawbacks. There are also loads of ways to run a public institution and they also have merits and drawbacks in the same way.

All of the above have their similarities and differences.

When people say "run it like a business" I believe it is usually a criticism of poor resource allocation and use, which businesses are by no means automatically good at despite having perhaps a greater incentive to do so.
