The first time Tommy clocks it is when they have their first 'not an arguement but a misunderstanding' and Buck tries to explain himself but he keeps tripping over his words, barely forms a full sentence without his voice shaking, his breath quickens up and Tommy's heart breaks all over because it's not even a big deal— the thing they're discussing, but seeing Evan struggle with his words, seeing him this nervous that he can barely talk, it's painful so he cups Evan's face, looks him in the eye, smiles and says "hey, breathe. it's okay."

personally can't comprehend the logic behind people claiming to love a character but also actively wanting that character to go through a painful breakup with their first queer love interest right after he finds the courage to start discovering his identity & seeking queer joy solely because they ship him w someone else, but maybe that's just me

Buck never refers about himself in 3rd person with Evan, but easily does it with Buck (Buck 1.0, 2.0, 3.0) and even let people (especially firefam) to make it part of the joke or a pun like "You bucked it up" or all other things like that

Buck is the mask he wears to protect Evan, because no one really could protect Evan before he had to create Buck - cocky, but lovable, hero firefighter without fears. Buck helps Evan stay safe, but not free

And then Tommy came and called him Evan and suddenly he doesn't need this mask anymore. Evan is free and safe
