In 2012, 22-year-old Rekia Boyd was shot in the back of the head by an off-duty police officer named Dante Servin. Despite having fired 5 shots at an unarmed group, Servin was charged with involuntary manslaughter; implying that he acted recklessly - “without regard for the risks”. On Monday, last week, Servin was cleared of all charges.
Today we disrupted #PennRelays, one of the largest sports events in the world, because we believe the murders of black women and black girls at the hands of the police have too often gone unnoticed. As thousands of people gather for#FreddieGray in Baltimore, MD today, we must also support and remember#RekiaBoyd and the countless other black women and girls that have been killed by police brutality and for whom justice has not been served.
Please share and help spread the word about this injustice.
It is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard.
“Forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you’re inspired or not. Habit will help you finish and polish your stories. Inspiration won’t. Habit in persistence in practice.”
Sometimes being a friend means mastering the art of timing. There is a time for silence. A time to let go and allow people to hurl themselves into their own destiny. And a time to prepare to pick up the pieces when it’s all over.
To be human is to be fallible. “To err is human”, right? Why do we put so much faith in ourselves? We make plans, design programs, projects to solve problems that humans created and then expect our fix to be the end all be all. Everything we do is the product of what has been done and will be affected by what will be done. We could design the perfect program to fix solve the ills of poverty and it will create another problem. The human factor must be considered as we attempt to fix, solve, understand, teach, learn grow...etc.
We must take responsibility for what “we” have made. The good bad and the ugly. We collectively made this environment, community, culture, world. And nothing that we do individually is going to fix it. We want so much to be the creator, and never seem to be satisfied with being a part of the creation. This world will never provide what we need to feel like a god, because it was made by humans. It will allow you to fly for a while but soon it will consume you and like Icarus You will fall. Its the same for anything you make, it will work for a while but then it too will be consumed. It will die, be forgotten or change into something unrecognizable by its maker. And still we want it to be immortal - living off it forever, profiting from its re-animated corpse...What does that make us?
But what if we design with this in mind.....this thing I am attempting to make will one day no longer be needed and that’s what I want. If we are trying to solve a problem, fix an issue, fill a need - shouldn't we design it to die? Design it with the hope that it will grow, change and someday it will no longer be needed. After all isn't that what we we’re created to do....live, adapt, change, grow, serve a purpose or two and then die. In doing so we become a part of all that we touch and therefore live on and on and on and......on
