What a wonderful thing it will be if your child cherishes the time he has spent with you since he was a child. However, if he is disciplined, he will value time.

Speaking skills enable us to communicate with others. It empowers us to express our thoughts, views, and feelings. Whether it's public speaking or speaking with friends, speaking skills are necessary for every context.
However, children most often feel shy or may have a hard time expressing their views. It is common to find children staying silent or escaping the stares of teachers during classroom discussions.
This stems from the fear of making mistakes or feeling of shyness. Children struggling with poor speaking skills may grow up to become adults lacking confidence. They may have a difficult time expressing their thoughts and conveying the true meaning of their words.
This asserts the importance of improving speaking skills right from childhood. However, they should not be coerced into strict training. They need activities that fuel interest to sharpen speaking skills.
There are many activities through which teachers/ parents can help improve the speaking skills of children. This gives the ground to develop and sharpen speaking skills.
Interaction is one of the best ways to improve speaking skills. Interaction fuels communication. These activities involve interaction and communication.
·         Know what tickles their interest
Some children may like drama and poetry. Some may like drawing. Encourage them to talk about their favorite hobbies/ co-curricular activities.
Forcing to talk on topics that are unappealing to them, may make them discouraged to take part in discussions. This never improves the speaking skills of children.
·         Encourage participating in interesting discussions
You can introduce topics interesting to students/children during discussions of any sort. It will make the children take part in discussions willingly.
·         Role play
While teaching prose/drama, ask children to play out the mentioned characters. You should avoid topics that fail to interest children during role-playing.
Select any interesting prose or drama. Assign them roles which they will play. Guide them to say their dialogues clearly and confidently.
·         Picture description
Give them pictures of preferably events/incidents. Ask them what is happening in the picture. Guide them if they falter while explaining. This not only develops speaking skills but also improves cognitive and thinking skills.
·         Storytelling
Encourage students/children to share stories they have read or heard. They can also develop their stories. Moreover, storytelling enables children to develop a creative mindset.
·         Story completion
You can form small groups. Start by telling a few lines of a story. Then, stop narrating and allow children to start narrating. Each one in the group starts to narrate from the point the previous one has stopped.
Each one is expected to add a few lines to the ongoing story narration. Children can add plot twists, new characters, or descriptions to the story. However, it should not deviate away from the logical flow. This creates interest and fuels creative thinking among children.
·         Debate
Debate is one of the finest activities to improve speaking skills. It enables children to listen to opinions and views, different from theirs, with a calm mind and represent their counter views.
This activity gives the perfect platform to exercise both thinking and speaking skills simultaneously.
This also inspires children to develop analytical thinking. Motivate children to participate in debate groups.
·         Games that involve speaking
Many fun games can be played either at the classroom, home, or even at a gathering with friends. One such example is "two truths and a lie".
You can form groups and each one in the group tells three sentences about themselves. The other people in the group need to figure out which one is true and which one is false. This develops speaking skills and also creates bonding.
·         Simulations
Simulations are similar to role plays. But, comparatively, these are more creative and elaborate. Children can use items as “prop” while acting their roles.
This activity is as effective as role plays to improve speaking skills. Moreover, children can play different characters, which automatically change the dialogues. This gives them an effective platform to exercise speaking skills.
·         Newspaper reading
Motivate children to read newspapers. Children, even young adults, perceive reading newspapers as a boring activity.
Encourage them to start by reading smaller newspaper articles. Newspaper articles have impeccable grammar and compact sentence formation. When they read such articles, they develop accurate speaking skills.
It is worth remembering that speaking skills depend on overall expertise over the language.  The language expertise depends on fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. Gaining fluency enables children to speak in English or their native language for an extended period of time. They can develop fluency through the aforementioned activities.
For enriching and increasing vocabulary lists, you can encourage children to develop a reading habit. Being a voracious reader helps anyone to increase vocabulary. You can encourage them to read story books in their favorite genre.
If they are not regular readers, encourage them to start with easy reads, something not difficult to grasp.  Also, give them books which they can complete within a few days. Once they start to enjoy reading, you can motivate them to read long stories.
Grammar seems messy and complicated. Even young adults may have a difficult time mastering the rules of grammar. Developing grammatical expertise helps you to communicate and speak better.
It helps in making fewer mistakes while speaking. Yes, it doesn't have to be perfect. But, making too many grammatical mistakes while speaking prevents listeners from getting the meaning the speaker wants to convey.
Teach children to develop accuracy of tenses, and a basic idea of parts of speech. Pronunciation can seem complicated to master. It can be practiced by hearing others speak. There are a good number of YouTube videos on pronunciation. One can listen to those to master basic pronunciation skills.
Moreover, it is wise to learn and practice phonetics to sharpen speaking skills. Most importantly, improving speaking skills is not an overnight success. It requires time, patience, and consistent practice.
Mere memorization of grammatical rules or phonetics will not improve speaking skills. These mentioned activities offer an engaging and active environment for children. This not only improves speaking skills but also develops interactive skills. This also makes learning meaningful and fun.
